These are a great set of video's. Considering all of these spi boards come with a specific length (approx. 28cm) of 26awg wire that acts as an antenna which is amazing to me they even get the range that they do being so close to the boards, they aren't single core either, they're multi stranded, I would love to see this kind of a test if you just took a longer piece of 26awg wire (like an xmplus antennas full length) and soldered it without the benefit of coax ground potential for the entire length of the wire. Im no RF engineer (I studied electronic engineering) but I remember antenna grounds were implemented for safety, while in our hobby I can see that it should have its benefits id like to know how much benefit there would be for such short antennas and the frequency we use. Basically the outer coax acts as an electromagnetic shield for the full length of the inner core as the signal we want will be picked up by the active part of the antenna (short visible part at the end with no coax which physical length normally depends on 1/2 the actual wavelength of the radio frequency unless you make an electronically cleverer receiver, like what we use so it can be shorter) and then travels down the wire as a standing wave into the rx, if the coax does its job which is the much longer part of our antenna than the active part, it isolates signals/noise from other frequencies as they will be induced on the full length of the outer coax core and sent to ground and not make it to the inner core where the signal we want is induced. also not to mention other external electromagnetic fields that are not signals from transmitters at all. You can see as antennas work the induced current generates a voltage so there will be a voltage induced on the outer core which is why you'd ground it. I hope what I have poorly explained makes sense. The point being id like to know how much worse a non shielded longer than it needs to be antenna would perform when it cant isolate unwanted electromagnetic fields like for example lower frequencies than we use and other random electromagnetic fields. As most of you will already know any conductor of varying length will act as an antenna for fields of varying wavelengths as this is simply just induction. as a really simple example a UHF (analogue TV) frequency of 470mhz has a wavelength of about 600mm's. If we make our antenna's that stupidly long we'll be picking up analogue tv signals on the lowest UHF band and our little xm plus's will be bombarded with noise it doesn't need to deal with.

I tried this already based on another suggestion. It got a failsafe within 100m or less so not worth exploring.

If the extra range is simply putting a 'different piece of wire on' that would cost fractions of a cent I am shocked they don't bother. Hopefully the manufacturers are watching your vid and make fit the better antennas from now on. Thanks, I have a couple of old antennas that I had accidents with so they don't have the connector on that I will try. Thanks.

@AlbertKimTV4 жыл бұрын
In theory it applies to all, assuming you've not damaged the board or wired it up improperly.
@frankbarajas4 жыл бұрын
While your results are impressive, I don't understand how that's correct length on the active part of the element? The XM+ and XM receivers have some inductors or capacitors inline with the antenna that change the length of the active element from the mathematically correct length. This was shown by Bruce Simpson in a video some time ago on RCModelReviews ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXOokH6npq2Vg5I ). *However, this might just be splitting hairs since the results are so good with the FrSky Infinity Antenna and it might just be that these are in fact "tuned" to that antenna.* Also, out of curiosity, have you tried simply not grounding the new longer antenna, or in other words, making a longer monopole antenna using your FRSky replacements? Just concerned with people nuking a perfectly good FC trying to solder to a ground next to some vital component. *Great job Albert and a tip of my hat to you for all that you have done!*
@AlbertKimTV4 жыл бұрын
I have no idea what this is tuned to. I'm just going on a suggestion from someone in the previous video where they suggested using the length from an XM+ receiver antenna. I used a more recent receiver as the length from older XM+ receivers is a different length. However, I'm not really trying to optimize this 100%. I'm more interested to see if there is enough improvement to warrant not using an external receiver and save some weight. I'm thinking these results are "good enough" and for some of these super light micros, this makes SPI receivers more viable than before. As always, beginners should beware. These mods are not easy for those who can't solder.
@frankbarajas4 жыл бұрын
Albert Kim - I think you have clearly proved your point and I whole heartedly agree that some serious soldering skills will be required. Hopefully, we’ll start seeing a ground pad for the dipole antenna showing up on newer FCs with the built-in SPI receivers. Again, Albert, great job!

@AlbertKimTV3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say for sure. I have messed this mod up on other quads and made the range worse so it has to be done perfectly and under ideal conditions you should see some improvement. The extent to which it could improve will also vary with the environment you're flying at.
@nikolausspence89583 жыл бұрын
Performed this mod and it only reduces range. If you are flying above the ground, antenna underneath actually makes more sense. RSSI is reduced by a solid 20% on FrSky and Redpine protocols after the mod. Extending the monopole or relocating it with coax will similarly reduce the RF performance of the RX design. The negative pole and ground and a ground plane are not to be confused. They are not related.

It's actually quite easy to mess up this mod and I made a follow up video on another one where it didn't work.
