Low gears work great. They prevent you from over stressing your engine and make it much easier to pace yourself. I use gears lower than I think I need. That way, on a longer ride I have a bailout gear in reserve in case I become cooked near the end.

Gear inches, I tell young riders to learn them. I think we all understand that gearing is critical in climbing, we get it. But cycling is more than just climbing. If your out in the flats and some dude powers by you in a 53T and you are maxed out in gear inches and are spinning at such a high rate you might not be able to grab the wheel because the 53T is at 110 inches and you might not be able to find a gear ratio that can match the gear inches that dude is pushing. Efficiency, pedal stroke, cadence = power are the keys over all the roads that we encounter. Find what's best and ride hard.

you could have 50 -12 and still keep up with someone on a 53. That 53 is only an advantage if you're doing like 30mph consistently.

Ill be honest, that gearring is hard to use to speed up, because grinding has higher top speed ofcourse but needs momentum and time to spin first

If you notice Condador is not dancing on the pedals, but in fact his body is totally straight and the bike is moving beneath his body. That is the secret you should reveal and copy
@silverarrowslk
@silverarrowslk 7 жыл бұрын
chousiself Yes I've noticed that he keeps his body straight and doesn't really throw the bike side to side. Looks like he's maximising his body weight to exert force on the pedals. In wouldn't say he's using a high cadence while out of the saddle. That technique is usually used to lever a larger gear round. We keep hearing of spin spin spin. Yes on a very long climb that would be the technique to employ but on shorter climbs you also need neuromuscular strength (torque) too and if you don't then your dropped. At the end of the day climbing is about power to weight ratio or as they say these days watts per kilo. Doesn't matter if your 60kg or 80kg same principle applies. If the 80kg rider can sustain 6 w/kg and the 60 kg rider can't then the heavier rider will be faster on the climb. You can see that with Indurain and Merckx. Also to use a very high cadence tour aerobic system has to be conditioned as this will require your heart to pump more oxygenated blood rather than use fuel stored in the muscles glycogen stores at a lower cadence using torque
@196hasnain
@196hasnain 7 жыл бұрын
youre right. the commmet about how he keeps his body still is a good one. in terms of efficiency ideally only his legs would be moving hence why his body is as still as possible, this is the same in a tt hence why sir brad is so good (cos hes efficient) as for cadence, whilst a higher cadence is desirable up climbs it brings up your heart rate so youd need a good cardio system to maximise the potential.

After observing the pedal motion or cadence and gears 34 32 or 28 inch, I have concluded that it is a necessary attribute to have skinny and fast legs to be the best climber.
@z1522

The peloton has clearly learned this lesson, as massive cogsets are evident on most hilly stages now. Contador's style was more about alternately standing and sitting, over and over, than just standing in this erect posture, which does work very well, if you have the legs and lungs to keep it up. The style alone is only half the trick.

in the UK when you race at youth and jnr u18 i think we're restricted in terms of gear inches where jnr U18 is 100inches so a 52-16 and its highly unlkely that at that stage youd spin out the gears according to a calculator with a cadence of 130 you max out at 37mph which is more than enough when it comes to a sprint. i just hate when the older generations look at someone riding a compact with dismay and say something like "we didnt ride ride compacts" etc. they also didnt have 10/11 gears, carbon bikes, aero kit, and research into nutritions etc, its people like that which keep a sport stuck in old times and drag people down.

word. I always pull those arguments back past their own so in this case i would bring up in the days before them, they would ride big fixie wooden wheels in the front, small wheel in the back. The most common one is when people talk about how they don't make cars like they used to. ...Yeah, they've advanced in many ways with smaller displacement engines, no more carbs, radial tires, disc brakes, 9 speed auto's, and, guess what, they're WAY better now.

I used to run of gears all the time as a UK junior, also at 6'5 in the uk I felt like I didn't have as high a gear as I wanted as a bigger guy becos a bigger guy will need bigger gears to compensate for his greater weight, always felt like gear restricting was unfair against the bigger guys

problem is .... Grand tour and big one day race speeds / times haven't really changed since 1990, when guys were rocking heavy bikes, with bendy frames, flexy cranks, big gears, long cranks, plastic soled shoes, NO BOA DIALS !!, whisky the night before, low cadence, no power meters, no 'marginal gains', no carbon railed saddle, no Oakleys, no jelly moulds on the bonse,no 28c tyres, no Watt meteres on the bikes when racing for Christs sake !, The last big change was aero bars, before that clipless pedals. since then just fluctuations depending on the amount of gear riders are on that year. Also 'drag people down ' - the cyclists of the past were humble heroes who everyone aspired to be. No one wants to be Frome or Armstrong.

I run 34/36 lowest gear (25.1" with 28mm Tires) and I CRAWL up anything over 10% at ~60 rpm Cadence (I'm 193cm, 98 kg), which works FINE for me, and worked Fine as well for Merckx, Hinault, Fignon & Lemond. Hell, Coppi and Bartali GRINDED up Hills at LOWER than 50 rpms with their nearly 60" Low Gear! Don't you think EPO has SOMETHING to do with these INSANELY High Climbing Cadences of the Pros ... Seems the TIMING of this whole "Dance like Lance" Craze is HIGHLY Suspicious? Maybe for us "Mere Mortals" Climbing Cadences in the 60 - 80 rpm range for Muscular Heavy Cyclists and 70 - 90 rpm range for Thin Lightweights would be More Logical.

well something like a 44 ring and 28t gear with 180 would be the definition of low cadence while climbing. I doubt you where out climbing that guy. If you had a high cadence or average cadence then you where flying up the climb. everyone's different but your speed calculated against all your circumferences gears, tires, cranks etc) is what equals your climbing speed. I know you know this but you said you didn't have a low cadence... not sure what your implying but it isn't that your going faster enough in comparison to other riders with easier gears to have a similar cadence because then you would be significantly out climbing them.
