Despite what the "purists" claim...the GR86 objectively needs more power. The original 86 was so great because it handled well AND was decently quick for the time. Toyota should have left the mk5 Supra with only the 3.0 turbo, and added a more powerful 86 to fill the gap between the base 86, and the Supra. Toyota shot the 86 in the foot with the 2.0 Supra (that no one wants...because who really wants a slow Supra?).
@itsme-rd9ib2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 2.0 Supra was an odd decision. But I guess it's important to remember that even the mk4 had an n/a model. But like you pointed out...no one really wanted, or remembers, that one.
@shabs21342 жыл бұрын
The power difference between the GR86 and the 2.0 Supra is not as big as you think. Toyota are purposefully trying to undercut the power of the GR86 to try and prevent it from competing with the Supra. Independent testers have confirmed that the GR86 has around 250 bhp compared to the 228 bhp which Toyota is claiming. And that is perfect.

Yeah if you trade your S2000 for one of these thats a mistake... S2000 is timeless and will grow in value very consistently. The 86 will never even be considered a Classic and thrown in junkyards...

Is it that disappointing? I thought it did pretty well in terms of modern design. Compared to the second version of the Z with the front end grille or like the awful plastic design from WRX or the Acura accor- I mean integra.

The whole push towards electrification is a crock. It still takes the same co2 to make a car regardless of what powers it. Too bad consumers don’t send a message to car makers about what the market wants. I’m happy that my accountant will finally have his day at the drag strip in his electric whatever but I’ll be holding on to my V8 until they prise that fuel injector out of my cold dead hand.

If I remember right one of the world environmental research institutes admitted that because over 75% of all electricity still comes from fossil fuels at the moment a BEV doesn't become carbon neutral until 75k on the odometer

Just think of it as a small parting gift from Toyota, before combustion engines leave us forever. RIP combustion vehicles, 1886-2030. But I have a feeling there will be a NA 2030 86.

@@fortheloveofnoise I meant 2030 for Japan, therefor Toyota. GM will also be only electric in 2030 as well as dodge taking making challengers and chargers only electric in 2024, Leaving America with just the mustang, and German vehicles. At least until 2035 when we lose them too.

I currently drive a 2015 STi. With the looming release of the GR Corolla hatchback, I'm planning to return to my Toyota roots. Every other car I've had was a Toyota celica. With the feeling that this is gonna be the end of an Era, and end that I welcome even as an enthusiast, I want to participate. I want to look at Toyota and say "I see what you're doing. I thank you, and I will remember it."

Pfft. They wont need to, trust me. Electric cars wont replace gasoline cars until an alternative for lithium batteries, not to mention a fast recharging mechanism is invented for electric cars. Electric cars still have overheating problems in hot climate, and capacity problems in cold weather. They're just not practical yet.

I bought a new FRS in 2013 (six speed manual). It was my commuter, primarily. I drove the 150 mile round trip from my home in south central rural Kentucky to my office in downtown Louisville, KY. Because my route was about 2/3 smooth Kentucky twisties, I did a LOT of drifting an had a blast. And instead of radar cops, they keep our speed down by using deer. So it was doubly fun. No, I never hit one but had a few close calls. When the pandemic hit and we went full time WFH, the car had 186k miles on it. The service dept. rep at the dealership and I became friends because he saw me so much. This is partly due to me having three scions (first gen xB and an iA). I went through 9 sets of tires, most of witch wer either Bridgestone Potenzas and Michelin SS. I settled on the latter, though the current set is the S4's, since the SS's are no longer available. Oh, and I still own it, but it spends most of the time in the garage. It has literally become the car driven only to church on Sundays by an old man. I retired two months ago. It still has less than 187K miles on it. I've thought about selling it, but every now and then I'll take it out for a spin, and I just love the way it feels to drive it. I appreciate it even more now that I don't drive it long distances every day. It is rock solid reliable and I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of selling it, especially since I now have a very nice garage shop to keep it in all the time. I guess I'll become like that old guy I knew when I was a kid that had a pristine MG-TC in his garage that he hardly ever drove. BTW, the power has never been an issue for me. In the 70's I drove an Opel GT. It had nowhere near the power this car has and I was fine with its power as well. I consider it a sports car, not a muscle car. And I like the "1960's feel" of driving it. I've owned 31 cars in my life, and this car is, without a doubt the most fun car I've ever owned. I believe it will be remembered as a true classic long after I'm dead. BTW, when I bought it I thought about the Mazda Miata, but I needed a car that could carry a bass and amp to rehearsals and some gigs. This car handled it no sweat. On a side note, I MUCH prefer the look of the rear of the FRS/BRZ to the new back end (specifically, tail lights). I don't have television so the first one I ever saw was one on the road. My first view was from the back in a different lane and I HAD TO know what kind of car it was. A month later I owned one. Edit: The one thing I really HATE about the car is that it needs premium gas. But in the end, that's minor compared to the pluses, especially since I'm no longer filling up every two days. :)
