I concur. Here in Poland since last few years cars are either company car or leased with full intent of swaping it for another. Speaking very broadly, white is considered "business" color and on car forums there are plenty of jokes about this. A lot of people don't want cars in these dreary colors but buy them anyways because any color detracting from the current norm is considered risky for resale value. Same reason why so many drive around in SUVs/crossovers when they'd prefer something else, its what keeps their investment the safest.
@JamVar6 ай бұрын
@@narki86 I mean, as far as investments go, buying a new car is one of the worst ones you can make, considering the almost guaranteed 15-30% loss you'll experience in the first year. I don't doubt that's part of the reason, but it's hardly a sound investment strategy to begin with, so it's kind of funny to imagine anyone caring about the marginal gains they may hedge against their massive losses by going for a more 'resale friendly' color option. But people are people and it seems they'll do a lot to justify a purchase of something they really want. But anyone doing that is...well, I would say 'putting lipstick on a pig', but in fact, they're actually removing lipstick from the pig because no one wants to buy a pig with lipstick XD

You hit the nail on the head, it's the feedback loop of the manufacturers and dealerships. They think those are the best colors because they sell the best, then therfore only get those colors, which inevitably makes everyone only able to buy those colors, which then artificially proves their point of them being better sellers. Take the ultra high end brands Bentley and Aston Martin. Their cars have over a hundred different beautiful colors to choose from (inside and out), and what are at all the dealerships? Hi mate, I live in Australia and it is much the same here. I bought a silver Lexus myself years ago and to be honest it almost always looks clean. I think that is why people go for those sorts of colors as they rarely look like they are in need of a wash. Also if you get a car with a red leather interior it looks awesome and matches the silver exterior so well anyway. Lexus call the color of my car ‘Titanium’ but I think in the USA they call it ‘Sonic Silver’ but it is silver and can almost look slightly green under certain light. Just my take on it but white is cheaper and was often sold as discounted fleet cars making them very popular . Black was difficult to keep clean and shiny Colors often faded in the got Aussie sun, especially red. Plus if you speak to many panel beaters they will tell you that certain Colors are a pain the arse to match properly after a crash if they require a respray. For the record metallic Blue and metallic red cars have started make a comeback over here though. It could be different in the USA but that was the main driving factor here no pun intended. As a side note we actually spell colour with a u I just left it as the American spelling for context.

This explains a lot. I've been working in a car factory fpr years and have complained about this for years, all the interesting colours have disappeared. We used to joke about 50 shades of grey and that after 6 months this new car finally comes in a colour that isn't grey and it is... brown... And the times it does come in colour it isn't nearly as green as you'd expect, it is grey metallic with a hint of green, blue or red... Bought my first car in a nice bright blue, which was discontinued by the time I wanted my second one. Ended up with a grey one despite telling myself I would never buy q grey car because... well it was what was available, I had to pick between plain white, plain black and a grey that was at least metallic and had some nice red accents. If I ever do get another car, it's damn sure going to be red or blue, or hopefully there will be more colour options by then.

Your comment about yellow, having the lowest depreciation doesn’t really mean much of anything if you stop and think about it. Just exactly what kind of cars come in yellow? It would be generally sports cars, and those tend to hold their value better. So this is how somebody can easily lie with statistics. It’s technically true that yellow cars hold their value better but if you buy a mainstream car in yellow, you will probably find out nobody wants it when you want to trade it in. I also don’t think the current color palette is really a plot for the car makers to save money. Have you been to a furniture store like Crate&Barrel lately. There’s no color in the store. Everything is monochromatic. It’s not to save money. It’s just what the current style is. Even the exterior colors on homes are grays and whites and blacks. Home Depot charges you the same price for any color of paint that you want, so it’s not because it’s cheaper . Eventually things will turn and color will make a comeback.

interesting. I feel like there's a strange lack of flexibility to 'vehicle ordering'; this should be split into two categories. 1. Dealerships order what they feel sells well (models, trims, powertrains) in addition to basic stocking requirements from the manufacturer. 2. Cutomers should be able to order whatever configuration their heart desires. Yes, any option, any available colour could be specc'ed and ordered in advance with no impact to the supply chain. Their VIN is hardwired into the manufacturing chain and assembly/paint becomes specific to that spec. It's already configured that way; what more effort would there be to configure a specification from the customer, even if it's for a Corolla? anyway, I've always had colourful cars....well...except for my silver Mazda3 I'm currently driving. But I feel like green (like my NB2's Emerald Metallic Green) is an absolutely stunning colour and appropriate for nearly every car. There are a few faults here. 1-Its not an issue of resale value with gray, black or white. Its an issue of time. Those cars will sell the FASTEST. You can have an orange car, and command a premium, but it will take some time until the buyer that wants that color shows up. Most sellers dont want to sit on a car, be it a dealership, or the seller (if they dont trade and just post listings). So there is truth to that. (No, Im not coping. I have two green cars, a brown car, an orange car, a red car, a beige blue, and sure, four black ones too). Oh, forgot the white bus too. 2-At least with Dodge, cars are in fact ordered by the dealer, and they pick and choose whatever they want. They will pick cars that will sell the quickest, which means, black, sunroof, black interior, but also price caps. So no shakers for the Scat Packs, but a TON of 5.7s that do have them, and with the handling package, with bigger tires, ending up a grand or two more than the 6.4. Chevy does the same with Vettes and Camaros that are dealer allocated, where a general manager or lead salesman will pick each RSO for the car. Of course, this does NOT include last model years, like 2023 Dodges, 2024 Camaros, 2024 TRXs, which are basically turned into cash cows and sold at auctions, before the car is built, giving the auction winner, or heighest bidder the opportunity to build the car how they want. But still, you could build the car you wanted, like I did in 23, for my 1320 Challenger. No sunroof, and SubLime green.

These are the colors most people want. I don’t know why, but it is. I worked at GM dealers as a tech for many years. We did keep an inventory of other colors; gold, blue, green, orange, red. The green, blue, and orange vehicles would sit on the lot, sometimes as long as six months. Black, white, and silver were like a revolving door. So, that is what we stocked most of. That trend started around the year 2000. The popular color in the 1990s was Metallic Polo green, at least on the Cadillacs. Teal for the other divisions. Mfgs build what people are buying. At the moment, that is black, white or silver crossovers and suvs. At some point, that trend will change.

I noticed it too, I simply attributed it to the extra cost for colored paint and that most people don't see the point in it... What you say about the dealerships feels spot on as we had to try 3 different places to get a new car in the color that my wife wanted. The first two told us it wasn't possible, and they'd happily sell us White or Grey, but she held out and we got one, to which she's really happy we kept trying.

this is why i buy cars that standout

I like the cars that are close to the color of dirt, so I do not have to wash them as often. Grey, silver and gold are the best.

I was told as a kid that colorful cars came with way more expensive insurance, it's just never felt financially practical to get one

Yeah we were all told that... any of these awesome colors are harder to match after an accident... but then again so is silver. Could be more expensive to fix, but then I would repaint the entire car or find same color panels from a car recycling place... the issue is the rear quarter panel... that I would just paint the entire car....

Just a myth! Insurance companies have much more detailed systems than color to calculate premiums.

@@albonfilms indeed it was debunked, but too late for all the non-car people.

@@albonfilms I am not sure my insurer actually knows the color of my daily driver. I don't think they asked, and they never saw it in person.
