I've been in a wonderful relationship for the past 5 years now. The first time I heard the song "Lover" it was on the radio and I was driving to work after a fight I had with my boyfriend. I heard this song and just started crying because it just seemed to embody our entire relationship and even though i was soooo mad at him it reminded me just how freaking much I love him. We had just moved into our own house that we bought together a few months prior which is why this lyrics "this is our house we make the rules" really struck me. We are now getting Married next year. I will be walking down the isle to this song ❤

The first time I heard "Cruel Summer" I was convinced it was about Tom Hiddleston, because it seemed so negative and doomed plus the timeline of summer seemed to add up. But after a while I came to believe that this song is the continuation of "Delicate". Not just because she "cried like a baby coming home from the [dive] bar", but because this struggle of trying to keep it light, when she was already in deep parallels in both songs. She wonders if it's "cool that [she] said all that", because things are still "delicate", but then again she doesn't want "to keep secrets just to keep [him]". Plus, on "King of My Heart" and "Cornelia Street" she revealed how she was suspicious in the beginning stages of their relationship that he was just playing [card] games and charming her, maybe "grinning like a devil"?

It’s this idea of you can’t be fully open and vulnerable because it’s supposed to be casual, you’re supposed to be chill and cool and sophisticated and developing feelings is doesn’t fit into that image she is trying to project. Especially with the whole idea that he cuts to the bone but he’s gonna be the last one to know She’s bleeding and hurting. She says she’s fine because she has to be chill and easygoing, but really she’s falling in love with him and she knows it.

I’m in the very rare Swifty camp that rates It’s Nice To Have A Friend as my favourite song off of Lover. For me, when I first heard Lover, I was solo backpacking through Europe for the first time ever. I was alone, and this song hit me like a ton of bricks. Not having any friends around, being in an unknown foreign country, missing home and my friends, I must have replayed it a 1000 times. It brought me so much comfort.
@TheDementedDreamer3 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of people don’t rate it. But in terms of the storytelling, I love that it feels like Taylor is talking about a friendship that has spanned the innocence of childhood to dating and becoming lovers and the trials of life that interfere in that to eventually being one that blossoms into marriage and forever love. One where a partner is their support and their best friend.

Oh my gosh I love "It's nice to have a friend" sooooo much! Especially looking back at it now that she's written Folklore and Evermore, it makes much more sense to not try understanding it through the lenses of Taylor's life. I love the storytelling in that song, the melody is so simple, but it's a whole love story detailed. Love you guys xxx
@stansb19512 жыл бұрын
I interpret "It's Nice to Have a Friend" as a scenario we all had in our childhood. It's full of lyrics that basically triggers our memories with our friends when we were younger, such as "sleeping in tents", "school bell rings". Dunno why most people doesn't appreciate the song it deserves. I feel calm whenever I listen to it.

I just love how in "Death by a thousand cuts" she uses asyndeton by enumerating a list of elements without conjunctions because it's such an expressive rethorical figure. It just reminded me of Lope de Vega's "Desmayarse, atraverse" which is a poem in which he describes love in the same way and it's absolutely precious.

It’s funny, because It’s Nice to Have a Friend is actually one of my top 20 TS songs of all time. I think it’s so sweet and simplistic but in a beautiful way, and I am also from Toronto and I love that she used vocals from a Toronto school choir in the track! The song just always makes me smile. Maybe it’s because I was bullied relentlessly in elementary school (don’t worry, it turned around when I got to high school and I’m 29 years old and am totally fine now 😂) but I relate to the feeling of gratitude when just one person is kind to you when you feel lonely or like you really need someone to be there for you. I really love it!!

I actually feel that the line “angels roll their eyes” in cruel summer could also be a reference to the fact that her squad (vs angels) looked the other way and left her alone when shit was going down
@makananigrace Жыл бұрын
nah i think it's bc taylor, the angle, is cognizant of the devils recklessness and maybe even impure intentions in getting involved w her or "rolling the dice" but she's complacent in it, she knows he's the devil but she continues anyway, just rolling her eyes at it rather than leaving or doing something ab it even tho she's aware of what he's doing

Hey! Great channel. Here's why I always love listening to It's Nice to Have a Friend: the song samples a composition created by a youth music school in Toronto (Regent Park School of Music, ages 9-18), which now gets royalties from the song to help fund their program. Taylor also made a donation to the school :) In that context, the lyrics about being in school and having a friend are really really sweet. So every time I listen I think of those kids being so happy to be a part of a Taylor Swift album and their program being supported by the song, and it warms my cold cold heart

This was sheer JOY to watch- I was smiling the whole time. Thanks for making it! Love Taylor and loved this album. Death By A Thousand Cuts is hands down the best track. I feel about Fiona Apple the way you feel about Taylor’s wordplay, layers of meaning, and talented songwriting. Ok idk if anybody said sth about Cruel Summer already but here’s my opinion: I think it’s more than clear it’s about Joe (especially if you link it to the insecurities she feels in delicate, maybe the immediately previous stage to that phase on their relationship), and I LOVE the “grinning like a devil” part because I THINK it’s very similar to the Mastermind’s “wide smirk” when he hears her confession of “I’ve planned all this to happen because I couldn’t live without you”. Idk, it just feels so much like sth Joe would do (his personality), and it makes sense that he would smile when she confesses she loves him because HE KNEW THAT TOO

Now I am binge watching all of your videos after finally making an ultimate Taylor Swift playlist on my phone, ranking all of the numbers.. AND I AM SO DOUBTING MY CHOICES NOW. Jesus, I swear, every number of her is perfection, AND SO IS THIS CHANNEL. Thank you for being there to fangirl with, my friends will not share my music taste. 🤎

Listening to folklore and then going back through Lover and your thoughts on the song has really opened my eyes to Taylor’s songwriting even more than before. I know she has always had a great way of depicting things in her songs but wow I really recommend going from Lover to folklore and just immersing completely.

can you girls breakdown all of taylor's albums this is helping me understand everything so much and love her so much more

Something about Taylor I love with regards to her writing process, she will give co-credit to anyone who contributes even the smallest thing to the writing or production! I think its ryan tedder who mentioned how he felt guilty she gave him a co-credit on a song that he said was pretty much totally formed musically and lyrically by the time he was involved. It just goes to show that she values anyone who contributes and shes not some credit-hog that doesnt want to acknowledge her co-creators.

I'm so happy to watch people as passionate about Taylor Swift lyrics as I am. Keep the other albums rolling in!!! Adore this!

"It's nice to have a friend" are my closest friendships, and the friendships I want and need more of. I didn't know "soon you'll get better" was about her mom's struggle with cancer; I could already cry to this song but I'm actually going to go cry now.

OMG!!!!!! I am so glad you spoke about Jack Antonoff here!! He is a full-on mastermind, just like Taylor is, and together they make a marvelous duo and history-marking albums. PD: I am a new swiftie (been one since the start of this year) and I have had a WONDERFUL time listening to her gorgeous music along this beautiful journey. The first complete album I heard was Red (Taylor's Version) and I was ENCHANTED when I heard it. The moment I heard the end of that album with All Too Well (10 Minute Version), I knew she was the one who was going to steal my heart and music taste. The first video I watched from this channel was the All Too Well (10 Minute Version) reaction, and loved you from the minute I saw you. All of this has taken me to loving not only Taylor, but you as well, so now I am watching every single video you have posted and having a great time doing it! :) 50% of the reasons I am a swiftie are because of you, and your well-thought way of breaking down Taylor's lyrics and storyline. I have learned so much with you, and I hope I can learn much more with your upcoming videos. Thank you so much for everything!!!! ❤❤❤

Everytime i listen to this album I remember all the stress that the first semester in college gave me and how this album helped me go through it, specially Daylight

It’s the exact same for me, it came out when I was in my first semester of college. I had never been a super big Taylor Swift fan before that, but I decided to listen to it when I was feeling lonely and bored on campus and that’s what started my obsession. And it helped me get through the semester 🥺❤️
