I would really like to see you react to Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime. Minutemen were one of my favorite bands as I transitioned from punk/hardcore to post punk around 1983/84. They are kinda jazzy/funky with punk energy and poetic lyrics. All their songs are very short many are a minute or less. Their philosophy was called "Econo" reflected in how each song gets to the point quickly.so if you don't like the song you don't have to wait long till another one comes along. Double Nickels on the Dime is definitely in my all time top 100. Robert Christgau wrote Re. DNOTD ...."Eleven of the titles are over 2:00 and thirteen more over 1:40, but structures are still so abbreviated that the way one riff-song segues into the next changes both. This is poetry-with-jazz as it always should have been, and while D. Boon may be a somewhat limited singer, he's a hell of a reader, with a guitar that rhymes. A- "

Personally, I think Surfer Rosa is their best, mostly for how much Kim there is (she has less and less vocal presence as they go on) and how both aggressive and pretty it is (kind of like Isn't Anything). Definitely go back to it if you can! Also, you can't do a Pixies thread without Come On Pilgrim! If you like Bossanova and TLM, listen to their B-Sides, which are all great, and even their BBC sessions are better than most other band's best stuff.

Hi from France ! There are two very good songs that you can't found in a LP : "Manta Ray" (and not "Do the manta ray" which is another song) and "In Heaven". I've been listening to this band since I'm 18 (I'm 50 now) and it's still my favourite band. Best songs for me : Where is my mind? (not a surprise) - Gouge away - Levitate Me - Caribou - Gigantic - Velouria - Monkey gone to heaven - Debaser - Manta Ray - In Heaven. As you can see, I prefer the early Pixies.

I don't think people quite understand Pixies. These "filler/transition" songs as you may call them are not in fact fillers or transitions. They are what Pixies are all about : a whole bunch of little crazy energetic punches in your stomach, and if you're looking for big stand outs such as their most popular songs throughout the whole album, you're not gonna get what you want. There are stand outs obviously, they're too good not to write hit songs, but I don't think that this is the main point of the Pixies. That's what make them so special and avant-garde to me and what many bands tryna do the same thing later didn't quite catch.
@HO-yc3pv2 жыл бұрын
Pure songwriting genius. And as you said I love how the songs are so simple and short. Zero fat imo.

What an album. I feel like vocally it's a bit on the wild side for me at times with the grating tone on some tracks but it seems to only add to the overall sound and the fun of the album itself. I remember the first time I listened to this one of the main things I said was that I don't even care what they're singing about because the music is so fun. That being said, I haven't returned to it anywhere near as much as I should have by now because I think there's a lot more replay value here than I've given it personally.

Similar to any protests from AOR radio (or pop radio, for that matter) at the time it was released. Their unpolished, "weird" tracks were part of the appeal for early fans who didn't want produced pop or unchallenging music. This was truly their last 'live' sounding album.

I love checking out albums with you and we align a fair amount on most songs but it always seems that the ones I’m most excited to listen to with you are your least favorite…maybe they are just the growers

Fair breakdown, had for me to to say I don't love any of these songs since I have listened to them so much. Part of what I like about PIXIES is not knowing why they do some this...just makes it more interesting to me. Just an all round great album that allows the mainstream to appreciate the subaculture!

Great reaction Alex, probably my favourite Pixies along with Bosanova close behind. That album has more of a surf rock and dreamy vibe on some of the tracks. As for R.E.M. at the start they are more close to early post punk, jangle pop then they progress with a more folk and country blend, by Life's Rich Pageant in 85 they pretty much evolve into the quintessential 'alt rock' band.

Crackity Jones is not a great song, I agree. But it works really well as setup for the beginning of La La Love You if you listen straight through. I guess it's hard to appreciate those dynamics when you're pausing between tracks.
