Alco's of MLW and Bombardier - The Last Years

60 minutes of non-stop ALCo action on the mainlines in Southern Ontario. Filmed from
1989 to 1997 with a Hi-8 video camera, then later digital-8, and transferred to VHS masters.
This is action that can no longer be seen on the Canadian mainline railways. M420(W),
RS18u, C424, C630M, M630, M636, HR616 and LRC.

Wow that brings back memories, the burble of the old Alco and the staccato roar of the 251 engine. I love the mix of power it brings me back memories of watching trains in the 80s.

West Tennessee Railroad had 3 of the MLW Alco engines. One got totaled in a derailment in Sharon, TN. I’m not sure if they still have the other two or not. I got to ride in one of them back in 2007, from Dyer, TN to Humboldt, TN.

Nice collection of footage! Really enjoyed that. I have been to many of those locations myself. I was surprised to not see one of the old RS-18 Tempo Paint CN Locos that used to run between Toronto and Windsor.

Well.... The HR616 is officially extinct...... the last 5 survivors were scrapped at NRE in july 2019 :( 1982-2019

I've always wondered why they couldn't have been sent to a shortline. I had read that Bombardier had plans for an HR618 locomotive with the 18 cylinder version of the 251 series prime mover, but never had come to fruition.

I know that CN locomotives don't have dynamic brakes, except someSD40-2's. As a retired engineer, I can't believe the engine brake shoe smoke shown in some of these scenes.

Yes, it was quite alarming to see the brakes getting that hot coming of the Dundas sub. Would have been a bit unnerving for the crew.

Using your engine brakes above 15 mph is a nono Your risking skidded wheels as well as thermal cracks Years ago student engineers coming out of Gimli Manitoba were beening instructed to use their engine brakes to try and control their train speeds as not to use their train brakes in order to save fuel It didn't take long before equipment started to need repairs Once the energy crises hit Dynamic brakes became the normal on CN
