Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed this 10 minute look at the last year of Cartier Railways big ALCO/MLW locomotives in operation.
Some went to the NYS&W, then to the WNY&P. A couple to museums.
Some where scraped on the property, and the prime movers purchased for ships.

Thank you so much for these memories ! Between 1979 and 1982 I have worked on these locomotive as mecanician . The units from # 41 to 49 , 71to 76 exept #72 scraped in wreck in 1971 , and 81 to 87 are MLW636 built at Montreal . I'm proud to said these locomotive as been very well maintain . The most impressive I experiented is the 8 hour max load test in dynamometer after major overhaul . The loud , low frequency engine music , seeing all the exaust manifold turn pink , I never forget this feeling ! And yess , when we had delivered after that , the're no smoke at all for a couple of thousand miles ! The railroad they worked is one of the most beautyfull scenery in North America . Few of them , had a prolonged life in Eastern US railways , others scraped . But , I'm always pleased when I hear the sound of a hard working Alco . LOT OF MEMORIES ! THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THESE BEAUTIES !

Oh man! What great memories you must of had working on these babies. They were, without a doubt, the best maintain Alco/MLW's I ever saw. They weren't the normal black smoke belching Alco's that I remember. I'm glad there are several place within a few hours drive where I can still get my fix, and hear that beautiful music. I have a lot more videos, and may put something together with the log trains, and one with the RS's. Thanks for watching...

@@1jackdk I growed up not to far from the first miles of the railroad. My grandfather had some friends in railway traffic control and they informed him when it have trains in depart or arrives at Port Cartier. He pick me at home and drive me near the track to see the show . At this time in the 60’s , they where only Alco RS18 and EMD GP9 in the roster . In the early 70’s , the first M636 came and it was most impressive to see and ear . Followed by 6 old Alco RSD15 purchased to B&LE in back up for the increased need for additional power . Few years later, 3 C636 from Morrison Knudsen and 10 used Alco C630 from DMIR had joint the club to haul the crude ore between Fire Lake and Lac Jeanine. Finely 11 used M636 arrived from CN to complete the team ! Let me say they haved lot of love needed and I began to work on them I always been impressed by this feeling of power and I dreamed to be one day to be a locomotive mechanic come true . The time I had pass on theses locos was unbelievable and I will allways remember . The pride to be in the team and take care off these machines was awesome ! To last more than 30 years in Northen Quebec and working as they do (some had roll more than 3 millions miles !!!) Its incredebile ! ALCOS forever !!

Some use flares to help people find them when their locomotives break down, ALCOs decided smoke signals help you know its working properly!

Some lovely sounds at the 4:49 mark. A stunning bit of horn use, followed by that glorious ALCo 251 bark. Beautiful indeed!

They did put on a fine show Jeff. We camped in a tent 81 miles back in the wilderness. At night, it was so quite, you can hear the Alco chant for at least an hour. coming and going. Sound fantastic. You could hear every time he would notch it, or set up the dynamics. I wish I had taped the sound.

The attacks were the week before we left on vacation. We were debating on canceling the trip. Our worry was crossing the boarder into Canada. We had no trouble, but they did have big shipping containers at the US side of the boarder with military all around, including standing on top of the containers. Coming back they just asked a few questions, checked the back of the SUV, and we were on our way, We went up I-87 out of Albany and crossed at Chaplain NY. We figured it be less of a hassle than crossing at Buffalo. Always issues there.
