Hi Cindy, I love using Alcohol Ink in my Christmas decorations. I always use a white paint to make the colours zing. My worry has been does the white paint have to dry before putting on the top or can you leave it wet. If the paint stays wet does it make the inks run? Mine seem to so I'm wondering if I am wetting them too much. What are your thoughts?
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Definitely Let the white paint dry before closing the ball. I leave mine sitting upside down so any excess drains… allowing things to dry faster. There is a discussion in the comments thread about the best choice for the white paint and I’ve dropped a lot of that info into the description of the video for reference

I see you have sealer and UV protectant listed but I didn't see when that was used.
@QueenBeeCreations3 ай бұрын
I don't use it for this project myself (that's why it's not in the video) but others expressed concern over the fact that alcohol inks are UV sensitive. I do seal my alcohol ink paintings with a UV protectant and sealer and I dropped that into the list in case they opted to use it. You would spray the inside of the ball before adding any inks... spray, dry and then start the project.

They truly are as lovely as they seem... sorry to tease you with them! It is often easy to take things (like accessibility to supplies) for granted here. The technique works equally well for plastic and would work on non-traditional items too... maybe you're looking at taking the original concept and applying it to a different project entirely.

Hello and thank you for the inspiration, i have gone crazy doing these baubles and adore them, BUT i am having a lot of trouble drying the inside. even after weeks the paint is wet. any ideas?
@QueenBeeCreations2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like too much paint. If you have excess it will take forever. You just need enough to lightly coat the inside, highlighting the alcohol inks. Try upending them over a cup to get rid of the excess and then dry them… rotating periodically to ensure that they retain an even coating.
@QueenBeeCreations2 жыл бұрын

There is lots of discussion on the page about what others have experienced along with solutions. See the description for the type of acrylic paint I used…. It makes a difference. Too much water will pull the inks. You could also try adding a water based topcoat over the inks and, when dry, then add the white acrylic if you don’t have success with getting the white to work directly.

Hi ,I have recently found (and subscribed to) your channel ,I love the use of alcohol inks in the baubles and just happened to have all the necessary stuff at home. I had a little go and now have a question, my acrylic paint has dried and 'cracked' inside the baubles, is this because the paint is too thick ,I did only use a couple of drops of water and it did seem quite fluid . Can I rectify the problem by adding more diluted paint or squirting in more ink? They are such fun to do I would like to get it right.
@QueenBeeCreations2 ай бұрын
Welcome... and thanks for the subscription! If the acrylic paint is cracking then I would definitely say that there is too much and likely too thick of paint. I didn't encounter this problem but I did only add the small amount of paint that I showed you. I'm not sure that adding more paint will 'eliminate' the lines of the cracks but... at this point... it is worth checking. Note too that I dry my balls upside down so any excess acrylic can flow out of the ball and into a little paper cup - eliminating any excess. Check on the channel also for the alcohol ink ornament version using glitter instead of the acrylic... a different look but also lovely!!
@AlisonWaldorf-yy4he2 ай бұрын

Please help us! We found this great video and have been having such fun creating ornies. Now we're working on NEXT holiday season but we have a few questions. Is your acrylic a certain high quality brand or just the cheap stuff (mine is Craft brand) since so much is used to coat? We've added some water to make it runnier but it tends to streak inside the glass balls. Next: we also find that the water-based acrylic reactivates the AI somehow and then distorts the beautiful AI designs we're making. Do you know why? For instance, today the white acrylic totally diluted the Botanical inside and turned it into a mere whisper of green. The blue used with the botanical bled pink into the acrylic since red is a pigment in blue. I am using Ranger and Pinata inks, nothing off-brand, only the "good" stuff. I am using a hair dryer after the inks to MAKE SURE the insides are dry before moving to acrylic. Any help or hints would be much appreciated. Ann and Kris - Minnesota fans

Hey there Ann and Kris! There has been much discussion in the past comments about many of these issues so don't hesitate to look back. I have posted the exact type of white acrylic I have used in the description... apparently others have commented that the 'type'... not brand matters. I lucked out with the one I bought apparently!! Some people experienced the 'bleeding' of colour you described (though some never had it... go figure!!) and their solution was to add a topcoat layer between the alcohol inks and the acrylic. That worked for them and you might want to give it a 'go'. I do have a video I did with some troubleshooting comments so you can check that out too and see if that helps at all. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWbCZ3-GoL1pb6c I also did a version using 'glitter', with no acrylic... that video is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX2Wc5eha5tsgbc I did three version of the glitter ornaments (if I'm remembering correctly) but ran a couple of classes using my favourite version - the one with wet ink and glitter added directly into the ball. Everyone's turned out fantastic and that is definitely my preferred no-fail version. Different results with varying the colour of the ink, the colour of the glitter and even varying the size of the glitter itself.

Without the white paint, would it be like a sunbather effect?

Without the white they are lovely but… definitely like a sun catcher… they would need the light to show off the colours.

Cherry… the information on the products used is in the description. Apparently I lucked out with the first type of Acrylic paint I used… it worked well for me. Others commented that the type made a difference… type, not brand. So I made special note of that for you.

How do you dry them without the paint all pooling on one side?
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Dry them either the opening facing down so the excess paint drains out. I rest them in egg cartons.

Loved the video and want to do this as a fun project after a ladies lunch. I was looking at the supplies list and noticed that sealers are mentioned but I didn’t see that in the video. Did I miss it? Thx!
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Two options…. Some will spray the outside of the balls with a UV protectant sealer to prevent the inks from fading over time. I don’t bother. Some mention experiencing issues with their acrylic paint ‘pulling’ the alcohol ink off the ball. If so.. you can spritz in some sealer between the inks and acrylic. I haven’t had this issue so don’t do that either… which is why you didn’t see it in the video.

How long does the alcohol take to dry before you add the paint inside?
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Minutes? If you are using the canned air to 'blow' the ink around then the ink will be dry when you can no longer move it. If you are dropping the ink and and swirling/shaking it around it will take a little longer. Generally I'm working on 4 balls at a time if I'm looking to complete and sell them as a 'set'. By the time I've finished with the ink in the 4th ball I go back to the first and add the acrylic paint.

How long do the baubles take to dry thoroughly please
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
If you have just a thin coating of the acrylic paint then mine are typically dry overnight. The draining of the excess paint is important to help this process. If there is too much paint then not only will it take longer to dry but the acrylic may be very thick and then crack during drying. You just want enough paint to give you that 'backing' colour. Just enough to coat.

Can you use calligraphy ink to do this ornament?
@QueenBeeCreations11 ай бұрын
Kathie... I have never tried. the beauty of the alcohol inks is their transparency. That said though... regardless of how opaque or transparent the calligraphy inks are it may still work well with them - affording a different look. Things to consider... The acrylic that I'm adding is water based, while the alcohol inks, of course, are alcohol based. Therefore, once dry, the alcohol inks are not typically disturbed by the water based product coming in contact with them. If you want to try it with the calligraphy inks and are unsure of their reaction to the acrylic... maybe drop a small amount of the inks on a piece of plastic wrap, let dry, top with a bit of the watered down acrylic and then pick up the plastic wrap (put a plate or something beneath it to help with that) and roll the acrylic paint around to see if it starts to reactivate and move the inks. If they stay in place you should be good.

Such beautiful pieces! I tried this last year, but I could never get the acrylic paint to dry inside the ornament…. Even though I turned them like you suggest. I used straight acrylic paint, and did not add drops of water. Maybe that is why? How long do yours take to dry? I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks 😊
@QueenBeeCreations2 жыл бұрын
Maryrenee... I generally let it dry overnight, turning them every so often to ensure that the coverage of the white remains consistent. I leave them propped so that the hole remains fully exposed to the air, not sitting flat on a surface, closing it off. Hope that makes sense.
@lisaadams61192 жыл бұрын
To piggyback on her comment, how much acrylic paint do you put in the ornaments? I tried your technique this weekend after letting the alcohol ink dry for a week and when I added the acrylic, it pulled a good deal of the ink off. So now I have a much more muted looking Christmas ball. So how much water do you add to your paint to make it as fluid as it appears to be?
@QueenBeeCreations2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... never really measured... maybe a teaspoon? and half a teaspoon of water? I buy the acrylic paint in a big jug (because of classes) with a pump action on top - so... one pump. It's fairly thick so just enough water to make it 'move' but not to make it too runny. So... the consistency of a melted milkshake, not cake batter...???

can we add glitter after applying the alcohol ink color?
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Though... if adding the glitter omit the white or you won't see it! If you add it into the ornament right after the alcohol ink has dried then it will remain 'loose'... not likely to stick. Could be a good look... like a sparkly snow globe effect! If you want it to 'stick' as a background to the alcohol then I would spritz in a spray adhesive and then add the glitter - and SHAKE! I haven't tried this so the only thing I would recommend is to double check your spray glue and make sure it does not contain any alcohol - which would reactivate the inks.

@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure I even knew there was such a thing but I don’t see why not. Some people simply blow into the ball with a straw, and some simply swirl the inks around. I like the look of the ink blown inside which is why I do it. Lots of options though.

How expensive are alcohol inks? Could this project be done with just acrylic paint and water? I have 0 alcohol inks and a ton of acrylic paints.
@QueenBeeCreations14 күн бұрын
Alcohol inks (Ranger line) typically come in packs of 3. On my site they are $15.99 for the 3, which should give you a general idea of what to expect. Know that you are only adding a couple of drops of colour at a time... a little goes a long way. The reason I'm using the inks in this... and not acrylic paint is because of the translucency. If you were using acrylics (which you certainly could try) I would suggest dropping in only one colour at a time, swirling it, and leaving it to dry thoroughly before adding another colour so that they don't mix and become muddied. The alcohol inks dry quickly - the alcohol evaporates, leaving the ink behind. You could use the acrylics as I described... a longer process... and I think they could be quite lovely but they would not look the same as with the inks.

WHEN I BLOW MINE WITH THE AIR IT MAKES SPIDER LEG LOOKING SPOTS. IT DOESNT SPREAD OUT ALOT. AM I DOING IT WRONG?
@QueenBeeCreations3 ай бұрын
It's all a function of 'where' you are directing the air in the ball. and how close the nozzle is to the ink you're trying to move. The closer and more direct the more it's going to give you the splatter look... perhaps the spider legs you're referring to. I blow the air in but off to the side of the 'fresh' ink. You can opt to try 'swirling' the ink a little instead and see if that works for you better.

These are beautiful,however please address. How long did it take for the white paint to dry? The first two I made never did dry and finally the light inks melted away. I tried again making sure the paint layer dripped out better and kept turning them. It has been 24 hrs and they are as wet as when I first did them. I used the brands of paint you used and added a few drops of water. Thank you for advise.

That's my question too.
@QueenBeeCreations Жыл бұрын
Cindy…. This was a duplicate question… she posted it twice… which is why this went unanswered… my apologies. Mine have always dried..l typically overnight is enough though it could take longer depending upon the weather… hear… humidity. The acrylic paint will dry and seal itself. However I added a tiny bit of water to help it move within the bauble since it is thick. However, adding too much water will break down the integrity of the sealer in the paint. No more than 10-15% water to paint to prevent that from happening. In the description for this video I give you a descrIption of the ‘type’ of acrylic paint I’ve found that works … which is the important part… not brand
