If you want a drying method which is gentle you can buy a diffuser for blow dryers which provides the heat without a forceful airflow. They fit over the end of the blow dryer and are inexpensive. I'm a retired hairdresser and I used them often in my salon. I like them too for drying watercolors. Your teaching is excellent. Thank you for sharing.

Denatured alcohol is not a variety of Isopropyl Alcohol. It is a very diff product that is extremely toxic. Not something you ever want to breath or get on your skin.

Hey Phu, it actually has both. In the United States, mixtures sold as denatured alcohol often have much greater percentages of methanol, and can be less than 50% ethanol.

@@AskariArtEthanol is the version of alcohol that humans drinks. It's obviously not recommended to drink something that pure, but it is common to drink 40% ethanol drinks. I wouldn't worry too much about getting some on your skin. I have some 95% ethanol from a liquor company, I use it to clean and experimented using it to extract something from "plants".

I've been using 91% isopropyl alcohol only with my alcohol inks. Of course, that's damn near impossible to find in stores right now so I finally gave in and went online to order some more. That's when I came across 99% isopropyl alcohol which I didn't even know existed until yesterday haha. Ordered a 32 oz. bottle but couldn't find ANY info about its interaction with alcohol inks until your video. Thank you SO very much for the demonstration! I use alcohol ink for my nail art and have gone without for a while because of the shortage. Now that I see what beautiful results the 99% gives I'm even more excited than ever to get back to it so thanks again! 😊

Might be interesting to do a drop of the copic, let it dry, then use the different alcohols to do either a pull with a small brush/q-tip or a drop of the different ones and a blow to see how it disperses. This was very cool to see. Thanks!

I've heard people mention the different types of alcohol. Most say don't use anything less than 91 and they never explain the difference the different strengths can make in texture. Also, some people say alcohol is only for removing ink... I have figured out from watching various channels that that isn't accurate. Thanks for showing how they affect the ink differently. I could see where it might be nice to keep a few different strengths on hand.

The quality of your art and your video content is by far the most helpful and inspiring (and fun to watch) that I've found on KZbin. No problem I have an alcohol comparison video. 91% and 99% don't have much of a difference. 70% does and I wouldn't use it. Your substrate (material you paint on) makes a difference as well how are you treating it before you paint on it?

Thank you soo much for this video! I have tried working with alcohol inks a couple of times, but only had 70% alcohol and the alcohol ink blending solution available to use at that time. I felt really bummed out that I just couldn’t seem to get any of the effects I was hoping for... got discouraged and haven’t touched them in a few months now. I’ve heard other artists mention stuff about using at least 91% alcohol if you can (lol COVID made it hard), but with this video I was able to actually see that I NEED to try again! A huge part of my problem was simply not having the right products for the outcome I’m looking for. Thank you so much for comparing the percentages side by side, and breathing new life into my excitement for my poor, dusty, abandoned inks and supplies that have been crying in the corner.

I'm coming in a year late, but thank you so much for the comparison. I'm trying to decide between low-price 91% and high price 99%. You've sold me on the 99%. I will also try it with a couple of drops of glycerine, like the official Ranger blending solution. Speaking of Ranger, their heat tool is exactly what you're looking for - good heat with gentle air flow, and it's quiet. It's also great for drying watercolor.
@AskariArt

I tend to use the cold setting more than heat. I've tried the heat tool and for big Canvas' it dries the ink two quickly. I will have to try it again. I wish there was a small blow dryer that had cold warm and hot along with low med and fast for speed settings. Be careful with glycerine very flammable
@NotaSeaBass
@NotaSeaBass 3 жыл бұрын
@@AskariArt Isopropyl alcohol is much more flammable than glycerine, especially at 99%. You'd have to try really hard to get the vegetable glycerine I use, to ignite. Plus, I only use a couple of drops, to increase the drying time of the alcohol, and it enhances blendability. It's the same thing as official Ranger blending solution. Here is a potential drying tool, but I'm not sure about air flow. I make cards, so quick drying is my goal. www.amazon.com/Settings-77%E2%84%89-662%E2%84%89-1022%E2%84%89-Overload-Protection-Shrinking/dp/B08BFBXTBD/ref=dp_prsubs_2?pd_rd_i=B08BFBXTBD&psc=1

Do you perhaps know of a DIY method to creating a proper blending solution (something like the Tim holtz blending solution)? I have used 91-99% Alcohol as my standard for years now, but when compared to the actual blending solution, the colours of the inks dull when they come in contact with the isopropyl. Much more vibrant in the actual blending solution. The blending solution, though, is just sooo expensive, so I was wondering if you know of an ingredient list/recipe one could try? Just alcohol (and glycerine) breaks down ink pigment (hence the dulling effect). So these quick 2min tutorials on KZbin of mixing isopropyl with glycerine are not really creating a DIY blending solution in the true sense. So difficult to find advice on this! Love ur vids btw

You are too kind, Kyle Rath. I need to look into this to see how I can give everyone an exact measurement to help others create Blending solution without dulling.

@@AskariArt It would be so fantastic! I’m trying various combos myself. If I do happen upon the magical mixture, I’ll comment here with what I’ve done! As a separate question, I know you’ve answered this tons, but what is the ‘type’ or ‘name’ of the substrate that you buy from Michael’s? I’m in South Africa and everytime I ask my local art and craft stores about a craft plastic or plastic poster board they look at me weird. I’m desperately trying to find a cheaper alternative to Yupo/Nara. Even if you just have a link to the product on their online store (if they have one) or an equivalent on Amazon, so that I have a physical example that I can try research to find the SA equivalent. Yes, you are one of the few alcohol ink artists who genuinely loves the exploration process. Watching you work is addictive! 👌🏻

Thank you so much Kyle Rath. I haven't found the recipe I've always thought it was 2 parts glycerine, 1 part ethanol, and 1 part alcohol 99% I haven't tried to do it but I may because I want to make my own metallic colors.

I seen a video on how the denatured version lets you blend other colors but the isopropyl alcohol stops the blending effect when adding another color can you do a video like this using more than one color by adding a drop here and there through the process asking for rock painting
@AskariArt
@AskariArt 4 жыл бұрын
I think because the denatured alcohol has ethanol in it and ethanol allows the mixing of the two colors. Isopropyl also allows mixing of two colors but you have to add the two colors in the same batch of alcohol when you are painting denatured allows you to mix while it's already dry or after the fact of adding it

THANK YOU! God I’m glad I found you ! I was pulling my hairs out because I was getting this residue pigment in my painting and wasn’t sure if I’m doing something wrong- I’m using 91% alcohol but initially started playing with acrylic ink and mixing them together- then I moved on to Tim holts but I was still getting residue and some people told me it’s because of humidity... it now all makes sense. I have another question though- my paintings don’t try- I leave them for days and they would still smudge to the touch...any idea why? I’m using yupo paper as I haven’t found an alternative to practice on yet ..

Also how do you get rid of those pigments? I tried with a brush and with kitchen paper but as soon as I try working on the piece again or adding more alcohol they form again and again it’s so frustrating- and by the time I try to get rid of them I just lose all form to the painting and end up with a blob !

Maybe you have too much pigment. An example is like salt in water, if you add toommuch salt to a cup of water, the water can't take anymore salt so it leaves undissolved salt at the bottom of your cup. Pigment acts similar as to the alcohol can't handle any more pigment. Or another explanation could be that if you leave your pigments out like with the caps undone for a long period of time it dries around the cap or on the tip so when you pour it out there's going to be chunks of pigment that are inside of your ink but that's very rare unless the ink is very old.

Well I typically use canvas and don't use yuppo. Even on canvas I get residue if I run my fingers on it aggressively before I seal it. But the plastic poster board that I use does the same thing it flakes off rubs off if you run your finger on it. it's maybe because it wasn't sealed, is yours smudging off after you seal it? I have a video showing you how to seal your alcohol ink paintings with Kamar varnish and uv archival sprays.

What percentage was the denatured alcohol. I am asking because the denatured that Amazon presently has is 95%. denatured alcohol. I purchased the 99% isopropyl that is en route and wanted to order some more but now all they have is the denatured.

Hey Jade most of my paintings I use Denatured alcohol. My video also shows how it works with Denatured. All my swatch videos I use Denatured. Just make sure you use a respirator when using denatured because it has ethanol and it's harmful without a respirator and ventilation.
