Lewis Hamilton came into Formula 1 in 2007, he was a highly anticipated driver having been signed by McLaren at the age of 13. But, although the expectations were high for Lewis, what he did in his debut season even to this day has to go down as the greatest rookie season in F1 history as he went head to head for the title against Alonso, Massa and Raikkonen.

You made another mistake at 11:34. The race at the Nurburgring was the European Grand Prix not the German Grand Prix. Nurburgring didn't have the rights to the German Grand Prix name yet despite the share-holding agreement starting in that year. Also you claim Lewis finished 7th at that race, he didn't, he finished 9th, he didn't score in that race.

Not really. Almost right after that came 4 consecutive years of RB dominance, and then 7 for Mercedes. You could put Ayrton himself in other car than the Merc, he wasn't gonna win. Not to mention McLaren did everything to make Lewis champion in 07. That being said, he did great, naturally I just think one has to be objective when putting someone on a pedestal.

Schumacher went from a team he won 2 titles in a row with, to a team that hadn't won in the sport for over 2 decades. He helped to build the foundations of that team over the next 3 years and then went on to dominate with that team for the next 5 years. He helped and was a crucial part in building their success. He also came out of retirement and helped developed Mercedes into what they are now before Hamilton took the seat He was in. Brawn himself said Schumacher had an immense and crucial part to play in developing the car and team into what it was to dominate the sport with Hamilton at the wheel. Schumacher has and always will be the greatest F1 driver the sport has seen, alot don't like him, but anyone with common knowledge of F1 won't dispute that. Hamilton is a great, that can't be disputed. But he is not the greatest of all time. Love or hate him, Schumacher was the greatest. Oh to answer about others with poor equipment, Schumacher also has the most wins in a non championship winning car even though he has less wins than Hamilton, further proof Hamilton is only great with the greatest car against the other greats records.

Funny thing is that Hamilton's 2007 season is almost identical to Villeneuve's 1996 season. Both got 4 wins, both got 5 second places and both finished P2 in the standings in their rookie year. Hamilton got one more 3rd place and almost won the championship, but Jacques 96 campaign shouldn't be underestimated. Oh, and both won the title on the second try. Maybe in an alternative universe JV is a 6-time champion... scary.

Amazing video. I started following F1 because of Lewis. His driving, speed, consistency just amazed me. I had no idea who he was and one day I just randomly started seeing his pole laps and best moments on facebook, his race wins and overtakes and I was amazed. I had no idea I could fall in love with a sport so much and especially with someone's driving. But it is not just his driving that made me like him so much. It is his humbleness, his respect towards others, his strength and elite mentality when facing hard times but most of all his grace in losing. I think Abu Dhabi 2021 shows this best. He lost a championship under controversial circumstances on a last lap after dominating the whole race. He sat 2min in his car and collected himself, got out and congratulated to both Red Bull and Max. Stood on that podium with head held up high and even gave an interview. The mental strength that took him to act like this is something I have never ever seen. It just shows what kind of person and a champion he really is and what an amazing job his father did raising him. Watching his old races and seeing him now and how far he has grown despite immense pressure and hate throughout the years is really amazing. He is not just a racing driver, he is an amazing person and a role model before everything else.

Aldas thanks for the video buddy. I just want to add a small personal note about RACE and F1 with regard to Lewis Hamilton. like at 5:04 when you said the obvious fact that since 1950 we've only had 1 person of color race in F1! Well guys ive been watching F1 since 1997/98. I went to my first f1 race in 2002 at age 12 as a prep school graduation present to Silverstone. We were pitlane VIP guests. I'll never forget meeting, Jenson Button, Trulli, and Alonso (when he was test driver for Reno). The world of F1 amazed me... i was mesmerized walking through the pits, the garage, motorhomes etc.... but as is so often the case being in Europe for me and my family- something just felt odd, out of place... like i could never ever dream of aspiring to such a career like it was a world we didn't belong in. I subsequently stopped watching f1 for a few years after that and decided it wasn't a world we would ever be accepted in. Years later in 2007 i was in university studying in Montreal, Quebec. I was there @ circuit Gille-Villeneuve... This time i was a broke college student so i wasn't a pitlane VIP but payed for a $60 GE ticket on the grass. I was just out to have a good time i didn't realise how important that day would become. I don't want to write a whole novella here so to cut a long story short when the race was over and everyone around the track was talking about the huge milestone that had just been broken "the tiger woods of motor racing had just been born" I thought back to years ago when i was introduced to the world of f1- and i CRIED. This is something that most ethnically European or white F1 fans will take for granted and will even get annoyed when Lewis's race and his F1 career are mentioned like it shouldn't be a big deal.... but it is. I understand we all live life from different perspectives. What many of you will never understand is what it means for so many black and F1 fans of color to see some one who looks like them up on that podium (for the first time... now its boring lol 😂)..... I cried that day in Montreal 2007, because as black people we know how hard it is most of the time to climb the ladder of any industry, sport, profession with all the antagonism you suffer from under handed comments and racism. I cried because it gave me hope. even when things are dark other people have been able to overcome. thats why lewis has the "still i rise" tatoo on his back. thats the meaning of it. STILL I RISE. And now when i look back at that 12 year old kid that thought this was a impossible world he could never be part of just because he didn't see anyone who looked like him in the sport that sometimes we have to rise above- to be our own trailblazers. and how silly i was to think it was impossible. because nothing is impossible. ❤️ Thanks for this video Aldas mate. I really appreciated the memories... forever in my heart. ❤️

Wonderful and obviously heartfelt post, P.M. Thank you for speaking up for so many of us motor racing fans of color. I've been an F1 fan since the mid-60s and for so many years never considered that a black man would ascend to the rarified world of Grand Prix racing. I rooted for Wendell Scott, who was the first and, for decades, the only black NASCAR driver (and the only person of color to actually win a race in NASCAR's premiere category, back in 1963) and Willy T. Ribbs who became a regular winner in the SCCA Trans-Am road racing series, competed in IMSA for Dan Gurney's AAR factory Toyota GT and prototype campaigns and qualified for the 1991 Indy 500, as well as running in the CART IndyCar races. RIbbs won the British Racing & Sports Car CLub (BRSCC) Star of Tomorrow championship when he was 18 in 1977 and later parlayed his experience into an invitation from Bernie Ecclestone for a test drive of a Brabham BT55-Turbo BMW at Estoril, Portugal in 1985, making him the first black man (and the only one until Lewis Hamilton) ever to drive an F1 car. In 2006 I started watching broadcasts of the GP2 series and was wondering why the cameras so often were showing a black man in the pits; soon I learned his name was Anthony Hamilton and that he managed his son, one of the drivers (!). I latched onto him and was delighted to realize that the young Hamilton was not just a participant, but was a major contender, eventually going on to win the title. Talk about an impossible dream! I have been a fan of Lewis ever since, through thick and thin. So more power to you, P.M.!

Amazingly. no one seems to remember Lewis having a big enough lead to almost pit twice without losing 1st place in 2007 Chinese GP. His tires should have lasted longer, but Lewis sats something was wrong with them and wanted to pit; the team continually refuse to let him pit. 8 laps later, having spun out twice and losing a 20+ second lead, he's finally allowed to come in. HE WASNT GOING TOO FAST, HE WAS RUNNING ON CORDS: look at his rear tire when his car was sitting in the gravel. It infuriates me the world blamed Lewis and totally forgets about this fact. And magically, there's no full race replay of the race that would have made him the first, black, rookie world champion... BS

13:44 for anyone wondering, Hamilton was told to let Alonso pass on track because McLaren was alternating starting drivers for quali and this was Alonso's turn, but Lewis was let in first by his engineers and at first it was thought to be a mistake and Lewis would let Alonso pass but he didn't. Don't really agree with Lewis' reasoning that this wasn't a good enough reason to let Alonso pass if this had already been agreed upon and was fair and Alonso and his crew would understandably be very frustrated. However, Fernando claiming that he went as soon as he had been counted down isn't true, the ten count finished right before the lollipop was raised and once everyone noticed that he hadn't moved the engineers started in the radio telling Alonso to go, as did everyone else around the car. Here is Marc Priestley who was a part of the right rear wheel crew on that very pitstop recounting what happened: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp2ykmVqe7eGm6M the whole video is actually worth a watch!

@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 4 жыл бұрын
@McLovin G The British media definitely favoured him but that wasn't reflected in the team. Teams want the best and fastest driver possible. I don't understand how favouring a driving is beneficial to their performance. Lewis wasn't given advantageous equipment or strategies. In fact, he was given sub-optimal strategies for the first couple races. The way I see it is this; Alonso had sign for mclaren in 05 for the 07 season. At that time, lewis wasn't even in gp2 and wasn't even on the radar for the second seat. Juan's sudden retirement changed all that. No one, absolutely no one expected lewis to challenge alonso, so he was never contractually number 2. It was further complicated because not only was he not liability which many feared, he was on par and sometimes faster than fernando. Both drivers played their respective media and waged mental warfare, but they never crossed the line on track. Hungary and spa aside, they never collided - which is unheard of. Ultimately, I believe both drivers hold each-other in extremely high regard.
@ajcardiff1

I actually think it's simpler than that. Alonso was favoured early in the season with lower fuel in qualifying etc. (And who can blame then? Why wouldn't McLaren want to back their two-time world champion?) But then Hungary happened and Alonso tried to blackmail Ron Dennis. From then on, the team may have consciously, or subconsciously, favoured Hamilton. (And, frankly, who can blame them? Why would anyone want to help someone who tried to blackmail them?)

To be fair, Lewis was at a strategic disadvantage for most of the first half of the season, so even if Mclaren favoured him after Monaco, it's not like Fernando didn't get the same treatment. Lewis even gave Alonso the win in Malaysia by blocking the Ferrari's for the entire race.

The first turn, when he overtook Fernando absolutely convinced me, and it was the beginning of that story. With greatness comes hatred/jealousy but I sincerely hope that one day, people will realise how lucky we have been to have seen him dominate the field. One of my friends told me... "You should have supported Alonso.... maybe he would have gotten 7 championships then" ahahha Great video, and great content overall! (subscribed :))

I started watching Formula 1 around the early 90's and have been watching it ever since. i have to say, within those 30 years, I've seen Mansell, Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Vettel, all reach their peaks of performance and obliterate their respective fields. But when Lewis came into the scene, it was the most exciting and enjoyable racing I had ever seen. To watch a rookie pummel all those seasoned veteran pilots was a joy to watch. What made it even more satisfying was that he did it CLEANLY, with pure speed, supreme coordination, and race craft, without resorting to ramming and dirty intimidation tactics as others have done in the past (or present). May he continue to pummel all of his opponents til the day he retires. Amen. Thank you Aldas for this essay.

He was one mechanical failure away from winning in his rookie season and 2016 both. If not for those two races he could easily be an 8 time champ right now. And anyway, 6 is pretty insane. He will go down as the GOAT when everything is said and done.

2007 Kimi had two mechanical dnfs in the second fastes car that he did not enjoy driving. He deserved the 2007 season just as much as Lewis. Lewis is a fantistic driver, but overall he has had the luckiest career out of any driver. Fastest cars in 2007, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. That's 62% of his seasons (2012 does kot really coubt though). He has had the second fastest once in 2008. No one, not even "the Michael", has been this lucky with his teams. I'm quite split on Lewis or Schumi being the GOAT. I dislike Schumi's cheating and dirty driving, but his dedication to win and push the team for success is a legendary attitude. Lewis is quite whiny (Bono this strategy is shit *wins the race anyway* thank you Bono amazing etc.) and has just happened to be at the right place at the right time. He never built a team to win like Schumacher. Still these two are the only ones in contention for GOAT.

Yeah, my comment was not meant to take anything away from Kimi, or even Nico, just to add to the argument for Lewis being the GOAT. I dont think that argument between Lewis and Schumi can really be hashed out until Lewis calls it quits, Ilbut my prediction is that by the end it will be hard to dispute. As for Lewis' whinyness during races and Schumi's Dirty tactics, I am positive where I stand on that. I couldnt give less of a fuck about Lewis' radio behavior, its heat of the moment stuff (Very intense moments at that). If he acted like a baby outside of the car, I might feel differently but hes been a consummate professional despite dealing with arguably more bullshit (mostly of the racist variety) from fans and the media than any other driver in history. Schumi's dirty, underhanded, and borderline cheaty behavior very much rubs me the wrong way. Their is no denying that he was amazing. In fact, the fact that he didnt even need to do some of the shit he did makes it even worse in my eyes.

@@senrusho I am divided on this topic. Lewis's on and off track antics do rub me the wrong way. I hate the way he virtue signals on social media and his whining mid race is in my oppinion usually uncalled for. He's driven in the greatest team in pretty much all of sports history, yet questions their decisions, ia untrustful and lays the blame for some things on Mercedes for no reason. He just gives off this vibe that he is above his team sometimes. Schumi on the otherhand had the greatest winner attitude of all time. He's stayed awake till past midnight to motivate his mechanics during race weekends or summer break. He always pushed the team to get better and improve. The dirty blocing and cheating is a testament to this win it or wing it attitude, though do find it rather detestable. I'll agree that the GOAT debate will only end once Lewis retires. If both end up with 7 wdc I'd give it Schumi though. He one two of his championships in inferior cars and pushed Ferrari into it's phase of pure domination from 2000-2004. Lewis just ended up in the right place. He never built a team up like Schumi did with Ferrari. Schumi had to drive from 1996-1999 with an inferioir car and still challenged for the title every year (1996 the car was just too horrendous though).

@@myco9253 You are so wrong in your statement .How on earth did you come to the blind conclusion that he never had a hand in building a teams success. Do you know what he did when he arrived at Mercedes. A team with money and ambition combined with two of the worlds best drivers (Schumacher and Rosberg) but couldn't find a win .When Lewis arrived the effect on the whole team was almost biblical in terms of the inspiration it gave the mechanics, engineers designers and even management. He brought belief to a team with hopes.mask Every one in that team was excited and upped their game .His very presence extracted another 25% from the whole team .Hence they got stronger and the rest we know . @@mariafitzgerald85 So the amazing hybrid engine the team already had in the works before Lewis was somehow magically helped by him? Your logic makes no sense. Even if Schumi had stayed Mercedes would have destroyed the competition in 2014, just not to the same extent. Lewis had nothing to do with the 2014 engine's design. That was the engineers. He has probably helped design the cars aero, but come 2014 he was handed a car that was so dominant only his own team mate good pose a mild challenge. Schumi arroved at a Ferrari that was no where near even the 2013 Mercedes team in terms of car design and structure. He changed the culture at Ferrari. He would spend sleepless nights motivating the mechanics at the factory to produce something just that little bit better. He struggled in cars with serious aerodynamic issues from 1996-1999 and still challenged a better Williams and McLaren for the title. Lewis did not go through this. During his rookie season he instantly got the best car on the grid (Schumi got a Jordan) and by his second year at Mercedes he was given a car with an engine so far beyond the others that he could practically win the wdc the moment he arrived at the team (discounting 2013). I don't hate Lewis. He is an extraordinary driver who easily ranks in the top 5 best of all time and he will most likely become the new GOAT. Simultaniously he is also the luckiest driver in history and it simply needs to be said and there is nothing wrong with that. To succeed you always need a bit of luck, escpecially in F1.

@@Maroslavka LOL cracks me up when dreamers like you claim that Schumacher made a team great, pure fantasy. Drivers drive cars, they don't make cars or teams great. It took 5 years for Ferrari to win a title with Schumacher. And what made Ferrari so good were the same people that made Benetton good, they were Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn, both of which came to Ferrari with Schumacher. THEY were the ones that built the team, not Schumacher. And Schumacher got destroyed at Mercedes by Rosberg. Absolutely destroyed, it wasn't even close, it was fucking embarrassing. First year that Hamilton comes into Mercedes, he beats Rosberg. And what made Mercedes great was the engine. Mercedes didn't even have a good chassis in 2014, Red Bull had the best chassis. The 2014 cars were a continuation of the 2013 cars, there were no major aerodynamic changes in 2014, but the engine was so powerful that they blew everyone away. Last time I checked, Schumacher wasn't an engine builder, he was just a driver, a driver who used to be called "statistically the greatest driver in F1", used to because someone else has that title now.

That team did not won title more than 2 decades. You are the example of brainwashed hammy fan. Of course he brought Byrne and Brawn with him, but without Schumacher they would do nothing. Also, better be beaten by Rosberg at 42 years old after 3 years of retirement than at your peak in 2016 like hammy ( not even try to tell me that it was because of Malaysia ) rosberg had less reliable car than ham in 2014 and 2015 Also Got beaten by rookie russell for 7 races straight, that is more embarassing i would say, not to mention Button 2011. If Rosberg stayed until 2020, ham would have like half of the wins You just cant accept that Schumacher is generally more respected by people and in the paddock than hamilton, because of the way he choosed back then. Not to speak about that merc engineers and former engineers says that ham has no technical knowledge compred to Schumacher and it is true, ham is bad on technical tracks like Monaco and also in the rain no matter how dominant car he has

@@Maroslavka More fantasy from you. No Mercedes engineer has said that Schumacher had more technical knowledge than Hamilton, that's a made up lie from you. Hamilton beat Russell in Bahrain, another, lie from you. Russell is a rookie? Are you dumb? Do you even watch F1? This is Russell's 4th year in F1, having driven a Mercedes car on multiple occasions, in multiple tests. If you actually knew anything about F1, you would know that Hamilton has been faster than Russell in every single race so far this year when both drivers have been in clean air on similar tires, look at the lap times, read something for once. Russell a rookie LOL! Less reliable car in 2014? Both drivers had two retirements because of reliability issues, they had EQUAL reliability, more lies from you. In 2015 Rosberg had two retirements vs Hamilton's 1 retirement, which didn't do anything for Rosberg's championship hopes since he was so much farther behind Hamilton. In 2016 Hamilton had more wins and more poles than Rosberg, no shit it was Hamilton's unreliability that led him to lose the championship, even a simpleton can see that one. You're a waste of time.

In China, Lewis had been on the radio for some laps telling the pitwall his tires were done (literally worn to the cords as we can all clearly see) but Whitmarsh kept him out there fighting with Kimi until the tire popped, when pitting a lap earlier would have guaranteed at least 3rd, & the championship. It still doesn't make any sense to me, how such a stupid decision was made unless it was intentional. In a season where you're already excluded from the constructor's title & losing your world champ driver at season's end because of friction with the rookie, a sure driver's title with said rookie would be a much more meaningful consolation prize than an unlikely China win over Kimi. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years time we hear from someone's autobiography that McLaren were forced to throw that season as part of their punishment for Spygate. It would certainly explain that bonehead call & the mysterious self-fixing gearbox glitch next race in Brazil (the likes of which have never been seen before, or since for that matter.)
