Some of those 4K results are a bit confusing with massive discrepancies going in favour and again the 12700k vs the 12900k …… the 4 extra E-cores of the 12900k seem to either be a massive bonus or hinderance 🤔 depending on the title …… maybe further investigation is required Wendell 😉👍

Hmmm, I wonder how this architecture will behave for Virtualization solutions. At the moment there really ain't any hypervisor (as far as I know) that is designed to handle this. So, basically it may be a smart idea to reserve the E cores for the Hypervisor and other mostly "background" tasks, though I'm not certain what impact such an approach would have on the VM's themselves. Would we even be interested in allocating any E cores to the VM's? Can you devise a testing scenario where you try to address these and other configuration and hardware resources allocation questions? An interesting one would be how the platform handles (in multi CPU socket configurations) RAM requests that need to be handled by the other CPU socket, though that is a question for later and not exactly relevant for this initial queries.
@votefornormality
@votefornormality 2 жыл бұрын
Test beds used for this stuff tends to be built around the idea of removing as many background tasks as possible to not color the results. I think you may need some new testing scheme with eff. cores. Some real world background tasks that you can simulate that show the headroom available for background tasks. For instance some browsers reloading pages, Discord running, or outlook syncing e-mail. Maybe some video capture and streaming?

The 12700k has looked really interesting for chips out right now and it seems like it's been a bit ignored by most coverage. Everyone says the i5 is great for mainstream gaming and the i9 is fast but hot, which they are, but no one mentions how close the i7 gets you with lower TDP and price. I guess the awkward situation for with availability for pc building right now doesn't help the content get the hype and momentum it otherwise might for an interesting launch such as this. I'll admit as a skeptic, Alder Lake has been a pleasant surprise. The cost and intense scarcity of DDR5 stings though, and pairing any of these chips with DDR4 really seems to be shooting yourself in the foot for no reason considering the cost you pay for Z690 anyway. Maybe the difference isn't so large to everyone but I've personally had enough regrets about building with slower memory.

Slower memory? I'm not sure what memory are you used to using. A good old Samsung B-die DDR4 bin memory with a 12 gen chip can do 5200mhz without breaking a sweat, and at very low CAS, something like CL-18-19-19. Maybe even lower, if you know what you're doing. With that speed and high frequency, I assure you it will run CIRCLES around ANY DDR5 currently available in the market right now!

If you don't particularly require 12c/20t, you can disable the E-cores and run the 12700 @ 8c/16t. With only the P-cores, I can run lower voltage, lower LLC, the chip runs cooler and the cores have more cache available. It also eliminates the need to do any 'lassoing' (forcing to use P-cores instead of E-Cores) and avoids compatibility problems. If you don't want to completely disable the E-cores, there's also a neat trick in the BIOS of ASUS motherboards (perhaps others have it too): you can enable a function to park the E-cores when pressing Scroll-Lock on the keyboard.

I think you've mischaracterised the difference between the i9 and i7: the i9 has 5mb more l3 cache, which most definitely will make a difference in games going forward. You can see a marked improvement in FPS between the two in some games (look at horizon zero dawn & dirt 5), and I'd say that's 90% due to the extra 5mb L3 cache. Having said that, the i7 is the far more sensible purchase.

@saricubra2867

From personal experience, it doesn't matter. By that logic, a Threadripper should be the best gaming chip because it has hundreds of MB for cache. Or a Broadwell i7-5775C with HBM memory (128MB). Cache only matters when there is an inherent flaw on your CPU that adds a lot of latency to access RAM, therefore, AMD chips with the infinity fabric, another scenario would be very slow RAM and cache helps there too. For Intel Core, since Intel uses a ring bus connection since Sandy Bridge (2nd gen core) and monolithic chips, the difference between an i7 and i9 is basically nothing if you game, you have 8 perfomance cores, that's what matters and extra threads or cores for future proof and singlethread (or IPC) perfomance. A similar core count Ryzen chip needs almost twice the L3 cache of an Intel Core chip to sustain the singlethread perfomance or achieve parity. Ryzen 7 5800X3D has a lot of cache because it's an offset for DDR4 RAM, but that doesn't change the fact that it has slower cores and less of them.

Rather curious about some of those test results. What's Dirt 5 doing that it can get such a massive boost with a Radeon + i9 ? Even with that, the power and cooling requirements keep the i9 as a pointless for 99% of the world chip, except as a budget workstation. And if I had one, I'd be working it as much as I could to squeeze all the value I could out of it, which means that cooling and power draw are totally an issue. The 12700K seems like a better option, but that Z690 price of admission is money I would put towards bigger better storage and (were they available for non thievery prices) a GPU. Cool vid though.

12700 has almost same performance for less money. If you don't do heavy workloads professionally, save the money. If you only play games, 12600k would do fine. Less heat, so save money on cooling too. Just think, do you REALLY need all that 12900k computing power? Most people don't😉

There are games that can fit in that L3 cache and highly benefit from it, it also contributes to smoother frame-times. Its not only additional 4e cores, its also 5mb more cache which can be important for some people in certain e-sport games like pubg where difference is insanely big between i7 and i9, but its for minority, most don't need it, 20-25mb of cache is perfect right now to have very smooth frame time line graph.

I did exactly your recommendation. I7-12700k, 64gb ddr4-3600 cas 18, and the z690 prime micro ATX. The CPU has a Corsair h100i capellix. It peaks in the low 60s C, has a 4.7 all core sustained with no work on my part other than setting xmp, and can game for hours with an rtx 3070. I just wish there was a better micro ATX case than the obsidian 350D. Other than that, it's an absolute monster of a chipset and CPU.

I think the only way to test correctly is same hardware, swap out the cpu and reformat. I hope that's what you do when comparing benchmarks. If you want a good rendering program to test the system, use pix4d. I have a threadripper 3990 that gets peged at 100% all 128 cores for up to one hour while rendering an image.

you say there is no difference in gaming performance yet your comparison images show insane difference in gaming performance. I have tested both cpus and it is true, in gaming there barely any difference. Something seriously wrong in your testing method if in Dirt 5 at 4k you get a 40% higher fps with 12900k.

There are rumors about i5-12400 variants already, and that one has 6 P-cores and no E-cores. I think 12400 is the way more interesting since it's relatively cheap, and you simply can't run into E-core related problems (since it doesn't have any). I wonder if BIOS will enable AVX512 automatically on such CPUs.

I am very confused on FPS rates. Since humans have 60 FPS maximum vision, why care about those three digit frame rates for those CPUs and GPUs?
@kasimirdenhertog3516
@kasimirdenhertog3516 2 жыл бұрын
Fair point! Indeed visually there's no need for anything over 60 fps, but higher framerates do make things feel more responsive. This is true, since there are smaller 'gaps' between your input and the screen redraws. That's why competitive gamers prefer triple digit fps. Though to me, everything above 100 fps feels more or less the same.

Evening Level1Teks, This video is super flawed with your benchmarks and non factual opinions on between the i7 and i9. 5 takes. First, what are those 4K Benchmarks numbers? Second, Why specifically test console ports with horizon and old titles which the average user doesnt play? Third, If it is so scaling reasons then include the most played game with warzone which does everything? Fourth, the i9 has more cache which is great for gaming than just calling it a 'background things' processor... you do realise the average intel user knows the amount of cache going forwards for 'future proofing' will be excellent. Fifth, Include E-Sports titles which everyone knows it is extremely cpu/memory dependant and most relevant than 2018 whole scale games? 90%+ intel users specifically buy i9's for this reason alone and video editing work than the average amd user. Please take REAL Active trends benchmarks into equation than a biased viewpoint. There are huge differences than what you say.
