Don't stand any angle grinder up. You're begging to have an accident at some point. Even with the weight, the base to height ratio makes it very easy to fall. Get a hairline crack etc in your disc, fire it up without knowing and you'll know about it alright. Your bad habit is not a design flaw. Show me one angle grinder with a lead that can stand up and I might change my opinion. In the theme of safety and protecting the disc, the plastic piece you couldn't figure out... is likely to protect the disc when travelling etc.

I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read kzbin.infoUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.

I've had one of these for a couple of years. It's had a decent amount of use and is still working fine. It bogs down very easily compared to a decent brand or a mains powered one but works fine for slitting steel and cutting tiles etc. Unfortunately it's the only one of the 3 tools I bought from Aldi that has survived. The circular saw and sander that both use the same batteries both died after less than a couple of hours' use. Bit annoying when you've invested in the battery platform but I still probably paid less for 2 batteries, a charger and grinder than I would have for the Milwaukee bare tool.

I've had a couple of these for a couple of years. They have been great for working on vehicles with limited access. Attach wire brush attachments and they're ideal for cleaning up rusty bits ready for repainting. I've just bought another two for the future when buying tools for little money becomes a thing of the past. For less than £100 I've got another 2 angle grinders, 2 drills and 2 impact drivers. Most of the tools in the 20V /40V FERREX range have been great......the lawn-mower's not up to much.

I bought one of these as a gift when the whole lot came together. I can't remember quite what I paid but it was probably about £50. Guy I bought it for has a lot of tools already but he says it is one of the best presents he has ever had. He finds it very handy for little jobs and those jobs where there is no power available. I have had occasion to use it myself and find it very useful.

I have the Milwaukee cordless grinder and it sounds as much like a bag of broken glass as the Ferrex. I think it's honestly brilliant having the rotating guard and tool storage in the handle since the first thing I do to my grinders is throw both of those things out. Wouldn't have to do it with the Ferrex. Quite awesome design. If you're still using this thing in six months don't tell Aldi or they'll send you an invoice for unpaid services. Sometimes being a cheap c**t pays off large and I think you've got a winner on your hands. Oh yeah Fireball Tool does an excellent video on grinder disc lifespan based on cut style. It is basically as you are saying in the video. His high speed video shows that when you do a head on cut to thin material it cuts much faster but you can see more of the disk chipping off. Probably has a lot to do with hand pressure as much as anything.

Now I'm kind of sad I did not get one, I have a 1100W 240V one that works great, but a small cordless one for that money seems like a pretty good and handy extra. About the fire extinguisher crucible, anything thinner than 1.5mm will probably not last long for aluminium (I use a 3mm thick one) but it will work fine for Pewter/Tin, Lead, Zinc, Bismuth, anything under 500C basically. You could always weld up a nice crucible of course 👍

Interesting review Ian. Mr KZbin chucked this up on my timeline, so took a look! Aldi tools much better than Lidl, one good reason being you can buy things online that are no longer in store. I like the switch on the top, as being Left handed, your Makita switch would be underneath for me. I've decided not to buy any more Cordless tools. I've got most things Corded already, and if I (rarely) need to use them out & about, I've got a 5KVa Gennie at hand. Only have one cordless tool - a DeWalt drill that I bought over 20 years ago. The drill is as new, but it's now worn out its 2nd set of Batteries, and they're getting ever more expensive to replace.

I've seen a lot of people get hurt by these tools.... They always use them backwards... You want to sparks actually flying at you... Only use the disk from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock position. You have much more control over these machines This way. In the proper configuration if the tool grabs it will fly away from you. If you use it backwards it will kick back and go right into your gut or your forearm or your knuckle. Now there's always that 1 situation where you have to use it wrong just because... But these tools are very very dangerous... Not to mention if you get something in your eye.

They are a fantastic little tool for the money, and the batteries seem to last longer than my DeWalt grinder. My only gripe is that the cooking fan on the motor seems to blow air down through the body of the tool into the battery, after some brick cutting, I noticed that the battery indicator lights were really dim, and that the top of the battery was covered in brick dust, when I opened up the battery, it was clear that brick dust had blown down through the contacts and the inside of the battery was full of brick dust, horrible stuff! I had to replace the plastic in front of the indicator lights, as it was sticky, and the dust wouldn't come off. The grinder had been used with a plastic bag over the battery to protect it . I had two batteries effected , might be worth keeping one just for use on the grinder? All in all fantastic value,!

I have a makita 18v cordless grinder but find it cuts out a lot once any pressure is applied, impresses with this one from Aldi. That fact the grinder don’t stand up is a small but silly design fault. The makita battery loads the opposite way so the battery weight stands it up. Enjoyed watching as always 👍
@MadHeadzOz
@MadHeadzOz 2 жыл бұрын
I think it is goid that it doesn't stand up. I see why others think differently but it is all to easy for people to put the tool down before the blade has stopped spinning if it stands up. Plus traditional, or mains powered not battery powered, that isn't ever an option in my experience. There is also a very good chance of it being knocked over. Those discs need looking after unless you want an exploding fragment embedded in you. Hence the plastic protector. Probably the exact opposite to a design flaw all things considered.

To offset the cost of the batteries (4 now) and charger over the years I also bought their cordless chainsaw, three cordless grinders, a detail saw, cordless nail gun, and cordless impact drill. I used to buy expensive brand tools (still use my Makita cordless drill) but find it cheaper to buy cheap tools from Aldi (and Lidl) then replace if they fail - which none have done so far even under heavy use. Oh, I have three grinders because changing discs while on a job is just too laborious :)

I think perhaps to get the rpm the gearbox is maybe a very large gear onto a small gear all grinders I have come across are noisy and rough! Seems ok,cordless tools are superb for remote working! Without reading other comments, that black plastic could be a disc protector for transport/storage. If like me you use a lot of the 1mm cutting discs they can be very fragile, a little knock or chip, and next time you start it up, slivers of disc flying everywhere. I really like the quickly adjustable guard, that alone is almost enough to sell it to me

I gave in in the end and bought the 40V Angle grinder when it came back on offer last week. £19.99. As usual they had the battery chargers at £15 but no batteries in-store Ordered a battery from aldi website and picked up a 20v impact driver for £10 while I was there. Both pretty decent. Not massively impressed with the screw in handle on the grinder... very cheap and not very nice-feel but more than enough power and the impact driver is very impressive for a "lesser" brand too. Little bit of research shows that the motors in these things are made by WALTHER and Ferrex is a brand from Positec who also make WORX and Erbauer tools. I think i'll grab a couple more batteries if they ever come on offer

The horrible rattle is the nature of a brushless motor due to it's high pole count and strong magnets causing a lot of "cogging". My cordless kielder grinder sounds the same, i had the same thoughts as you and checked the bevel gearbox for grease but all was well in there.

Except it's clearly not brushless. It would be mentioned on the box. And the disc spins easily and smooth with one finger. Brushless motors are harder to turn with just one finger. Most of the noise comes from very rough powdered metal gears, too much gear to gear distance and bearings that have too much play. It's just the nature of minimal cost manufacturing. All things said, it's still usable tool for diy use.

Ferrex stuff is alright - starts getting spendy if you have to buy the entire set-up. Use grinders all day every day - have the usual "Posh" ones - Makita, Dewalt, blah blah - the one anomaly I have found in "cheap grinders" are the B&Q McAllister ones. All the other cheap (and many dear) ones die fast in our workshop as they have to run for hours, not minutes - but the Mcallisters refuse to die. Which is nuts as they are cheap as chips. They are rapidly becoming our "Buy a small grinder" grinder as they just work great, for absolute ages. :-) But yeah - the Ferrex ones are alright. Not the worst by a long mile.
