I make soap, and I have learned that most oils store much better in the refrigerator or freezer. I don't keep a lot in there, but having a spare of each is a good way to keep you out of the grocery store. I have a couple of upright freezers, and I use the space that becomes available as we use up sale meats (turkeys at Thanksgiving were $0.17/lb, and ham was $0.87/lb at Christmas) for extra flour and oils.

When we used to get paid once a month, I would make a basic menu, then DH and I would make our monthly trip in to Aldi's in the big city. We would buy cases of veg, tomato sauce, beans, butter, and even soups. Worked a treat. Then during the month, we would just need to pick up basics of milk and such. We did eat out of the garden and we had chickens. Our treat that we would buy would be the fruit strips, strawberry or raspberry. So yummy and good for low blood sugars when driving. I still refill the green glass bottle that we bought olive oil in and keep it by the stove. I do want to add that during WWII, besides not having as much meat, Fats were one of the hardest things to do without. You can also stick a taper candle in a can of shortening and burn it for heat and light. Could probably cook with it, but I haven't tried that. Burns for a very long time. Great for power outages.

Aldi is across town for me in a high traffic area. We have a Food Giant. I get pick 5 for $20 on meats, then they have a $1 aisle where I get tortillas for breakfast burritos and chicken quesedillas. I used canned chicken. Kids love it. At the Dollar Tree I get my coconut oil and pie filling. We have a thrift here called Rifa where they sell marked down goods. I get real good cheese for$1, brownie mix for .75 and canned goods are .35. Yes I do shop 4 or 5 different places to get food! Walmart has good prices on certain things, but I don't enjoy shopping there. Oh, also I get the little canned hams at Dollar General for $3. I slice it honey and brown sugar it up, and pop in the oven. Kids love it.

That's what I'm talking about, grow what you can when you can and store while you can... in the meantime make sure your pantry has regular goods as well so you ready for the weather or crop failures or pests, etc... You always need a 'backup' plan when it comes to feeding yourself and your family.

I love the trial mixes with dried cranberries, the brioche buns, the cheesecake slices, the pure white meat chicken nuggets (the only place I can find them these days), the frozen mussels, and most of the fresh produce there. Usually I only go when my mother takes me. Lee isn't confident in our cars to drive that far. We're not sure what's wrong with one of them and the other one is fancier so he doesn't know how to fix it himself.

I love Aldi. I don't believe I've ever gotten anything that wasn't good-- well, my cats won't eat Aldi dry cat food. But that's the only thing. The hams are fine. Their luncheon meat (Spam) is good. Nothing better than spam diced up in baked beans to go along with mac and cheese-- YUM. Their frozen turkey breasts are the best. I do those in the slow cooker with salt, pepper and poultry seasoning and a little water-- to die for. I'll never buy another whole turkey. Their pasta is better than some of the name brands-- not at all starchy. I could go on, but I'll spare everyone. Love your videos. You crack me up!

This video was in my recommendations, probably because I had just watched another homesteading video and since I love shopping at Aldi, I decided to click. We do not live on a farm nor are we homesteaders, but we might have another connection. When I heard you say you were going to Aldi in Maryville, I thought, could that be Maryville, TN? Then later when you mentioned East Tennessee, I assumed you did. I grew up in Blount County (Rockford/Maryville) and lived there up until 20 years ago (we are in our 60's now). We now live an hour north east in Morristown. My brothers still live there and my parents and grandparents are buried there. This morning I've watched several more of your videos and could tell instantly I am going to like your channel. Love your animals! I'm a cow and chicken lover especially! Can't wait to see the rest of your videos!
