The Father of the two brothers was a baker who had to stop working due to health reasons (Asthma). So his wife opened a grocery store in 1913. Karl Albrecht sen. died in 1943, and 1945 his sons took over the business from their mother. In the 50s they started opening branches In 1960 they had 300 Branches and decided to split the company. From 1962 the new branches opened as "Albrecht Discount", and shortly later they turned to the Abbrevation "Aldi".

It's hilarious to realize that the European shopping experience is so exotic to Americans. Because what Aldi's are doing, is not a unique concept. Almost everywhere you need to put a coin in the cart. And in Europe it's usually 1 to 2 euro's.

This was a revelation to me. Aldi just closed down most of their stores in Denmark last year, and I think know why now. Basically, all of our stores already operate under the same principles as Aldi does and only the more expensive stores have extra sections, large selections, and nice customer service. I think the main reason they couldn't compete is that a lot of their food products weren't "Danish" enough. Basically, the salads were too sweet (American), the ham was too German, the liver patê tasted outright French (we have our own version here), and the bread.... well, the bread was actually very good (German), and that is actually what I miss the most about it.
@Thisandthat89085 ай бұрын
they ususally do a lot locally, even stuff that sounds internationally. They are not famous for paying farmers and so on very well. But no cheap discounter is. Also a lot of the cheap own brands of many chains come more or less from the same factory.
@dirkvornholt25074 ай бұрын
When the stores in Denmark have adopted the Aldi style and pricing and offer products that match the local taste better, as a customer, I'd call it mission complete.

Maybe it's been said before, ALDI has been around in the US since 1976, but now they're expanding. And Lidl (also a retailer from Germany) is also expanding in the USA. Both operate globally.

Although Aldi Nord (North) and Aldi Süd (South) work closely together, they are still two completely separate companies, which compete. Aldi Süd was the first to start opening stores in the US. That’s why Aldi US belongs to Aldi Süd. A few years later Aldi Nord entered the US by taking over the already existing store chain Trader Joe‘s and kept the name due to the reasons mentioned in the video. And fun fact: In Germany Aldi Nord uses „Trader Joe‘s“ as the house brand for some of their products. Greetings from Germany :)

Nice to sea how a company philosophy exposes it's different competition elsewhere in a different way. We have more quick in and out supermarkets on little floor space in the Netherlands, but because they have to unpack their products to present them on the shelves, there are always lots of employees blocking the lanes. The Aldi has just one employee with a little fork lift cart replacing boxes, and interrupting that job to man an extra cashier line or even the only one, if no one's ready to pay they don't sit around. If it's really busy the manager comes down from his office to be cashier or help out with the boxes. Customer service is great actually. All 5 people working there at different hours no their store and are nice. The Aldi also used to sell hardware of different kinds, good enough for the DIY-er, and that has it's own good customer service so you don't have to return it to the store, the came to pick it up at home and exchange the drill.

In Australia we have strict alcohol regulations and selling alcohol in supermarkets isnt a thing here except for Aldi. The only supermarket chain that has a designated alcohol section and only two cash registers that you have to line up. Most Aldi stores in Sydney have self serve checkouts and if you have booze you need to line up to a normal register to purchase. The two major supermarket chains generally have their liquor store right next door for convenience.

I remember the excitement of first going to an ALDI store when one first opened near me in the mid 90's, I was a student at the time so the pricing was very good for us, as an adult it's a store I go to occasionally as I find it's a little too limited in choice for a regular main grocery shop, one thing I've always gone their specifically for is extra virgin olive oil, especially now the price of evoo has gone though the roof in recent years, I'm actually about to pop to my local LIDL as I need evoo and I also heard they're selling Staropramen brewed in the Czech brewery there at the moment, so I'll be getting a few of them if they have any left, I love getting beers brewed in the home brewery and with Staropramen the Czech brewed one is noticeably better than the UK brewed version

Grocery stores here in Finland are quite the same, you got cornflakes but there is only like 3 different kelloggs , 3 store brand and some 6-8 other. And that is it. Wanna have pizza sauce? One type. Mushrooms for the pizza? 2 brands, one is a store brand. You get what you need, quality is well good enough. Most of what i buy i choose store brand. And the beer i drink the most.. store brand, full malt lager, 5,3% and it is simply delicious, it certainly is not "piss water" but beats many of the imported beers. If it was a Chech beer, i'd give it a 7/10 but just a lot cheaper.

Fun reaction and fun video. In Amsterdam we have, to few, Aldi´s. I live there is an Aldi around the corner. Its my favourite supermarket. Better than Lidl as well forme. Here Aldi puts the products on the shelves in boxes, I guess to save time for stocking. Also, most products good quality. And I know now, If its not on the shelve, its sold out. Dont have to bother asking, there´s nothing in the back. Simple. Few things I dislike: The cassiers are so fast at the checkout, im always stressing out putting the groceries back in my basket 😅 and last years the are selling more name brands. I prefer the one home brand concept. And they have sale but some product sale on monday, others on thursday (mondays are now no more on sale or sold out) and some products specific for the weekend. I dont want to be ¨forced¨ to go so many times during a week. But still good supermarket

in a different store, i had a closer look at milk (and some other products). they have to put stamps on the bottles or tetrapacks that have unique identifiers for the factory that produces it. i found eg three different milks from the same factory, one was a premium brand with 4.5%, one was a cheaper but otherwise identical store brand, and the third was the noname version that only had 4.1%, thus a little different quality, but it cost only half of the brand product. everybody can decide whether he tastes any difference, or whether he even might want 0.4% less fat, and which price he is willing to pay for those small differences.

Heck I even have a further "simplifier" in that I own a carbon fibre made "key" to get carts instead of having to muddle around with finding a 50 C€nt or 1 €uro coin and I always pay card to speed things up so... it really safes me a ton of time, especially since I a) have everything in need planned out in my head more or less on impulse in my lizard brain and b) because I also know when there are interesting offers and if they are worth it, courtesy of the internets. (Aldi South btw.) Of course there's Lidl, "the other Aldi", they have a tiny bit more of a selection but in my experience they are also less intuitive and a bit more confusing. And it's also a wired parallel universe that at the same is like Aldi and it isn't... Star Trek mirror universe like (or a Lovecraftian eldritch location that is just somehow decidedly "wrong"), only the moustaches on the cashiers are missing... It's more a Gentlemen's Agreement between the two founders to not disturb the business of the other Brother by starting a selling war (at the end both companies would make less profit, therefore no good idea). Aldi North buyed Traders Joe somehow in the 70s or 80s and why should they invest a lot of money to refurnish (to Aldi Style) and rename a established brand? Same in Austria with Hofer that was buyed by Aldi and still runs under the old established name.

In European cities it's definitely to reduce theft. because it's pretty easy to just use the cart as a tool to carry it all back home; you're probably there on foot anyways. But if you take a look on American infrastructure and the commercial zoning laws (AND the American way of life): Basically everyone takes the car to the grociery stores and the parking lots are huge. In America the coins in the carts are definitely more to incentivise people to bring back the cart. fun, anecdotal fact: In rural Germany many stores don't require coins to unlock carts, they are always unlocked. Bringing back the cart and not letting it sit in the way is just the right and orderly thing to do, so people just do it.

it's the treatment of a possessive noun. going to Aldi's is said as custom of shop naming sense in many places. It was very common to call a grocery store by the owners name. As such a grocery store is treated as if it's a personally owned store even if it's a huge company. It's the Piggley Wiggley's even though the store is just called the Piggly Wiggly on the storefront. WALMART is not a grocery store, it hence is not treated as such. Giving the possessive to the store name is just something people do without realizing why. Diners also were given the same treatment even if the place wasn't a person's name. Red Robin's comes from the top of my head. "I'm going to Red Robin's for a burger". Occasionally since people don't remember why they do it, things that just sound good to them get that treatment. Barns and Noble's so on.

"Why Walmart failed in Germany" is a formidable rabbithole that's guaranteed to make you laugh your arses off. There's a lot of articles and KZbin videos and even a whole doctorate paper about it. Check it out and be amazed! 😂

I haven't been to ALdi for years, but recently our "Netto" where i normally go once per week was closed for 4 weeks and then i went to the next Aldi which is nearly double the distance than the "Netto", which is the main reason i just go there. But i was really surprised to find out that the prices at Aldi are not really cheaper, it was more or less the same. Else i am mostly immun to all that bullshit, i just want to go in and out of shops as fast as possible and normally just buy the cheapest stuff if its tastes not really worse than the more expensive stuff. And if i really don't find something i just ask one of the employess where i find it now. And at the checkout, i just wish germans would stop paying with cash and especially starting to search for the last pennys through 10 different pockets in their clothes. I really don't get it when i was still using cash i was just paying with the next higher not, like when its 18.40 i hat to pay i give them a 20€ bill. All the pennys and stuff .. use them in small stores where you don't have 20 people staying in line behind you dammit. Also, just throw all the goods back in your shopping-cart first, pay, move away from the cashier .. and then you can use how much time you ever want to pack everything perectly into your bags.

many decades ago, we saw aldi as cheap alternative to the costly supermarket chains like edeka and rewe. now edeka has its own discounter netto, and rewe has its own discounter penny, while lidl has its own non-discounter Kaufland ...

In the Netherlands, Spakenburg. Do you really have to pack your own groceries? That staff also costs money! And Aldi has left Spakenburg. And 4 more stores in Amersfoort. That really is the middle of the Netherlands. Spakenburg, with 23000 and Amersfoort with 34100. The customer's choice. Also increasing in Europe. Greetings from Spakenburg, Netherlands.

What else I don't understand? is that the price in the store? Isn't the price you paid at checkout?? Y'all, that's hard!? We have 27 countries, with their own tax system. And then there's the price on the ticket, in winter. You can tax! Also too difficult to make!

wikipedia says that E.Leclerk joined forces with Conad(italy), Colruyt(belgium), Coop Swizzerland, and also the german rewe group (their supermarkets are rewe, and their discount chain is penny) to create a buyer alliance. they also expanded into other countries, including to take over all 25 stores from the billa chain (daughter of rewe for austria and eastern europe) when billa left poland.

In Germany, Aldi has a bad reputation as an employer. They pay well, but Aldi has the reputation of being a "bone mill" after 10 years you're done. Maybe it comes from the old days and it's different now. I'm not sure, someone who works at Aldi can clarify it?

Well, when we look at under what circumstances Americans work - then I guess that they will call heaven what we Germans with our way better work-life-balance call a bone mill! Or in other words: Our bone mills are still their working heaven! I think if I had to work in the US I wouldn't do longer than two or three years before having a nervous breakdown!
