PLEASE READ! My video on the most underrated relationship in the Harry Potter series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGfOl56tepmJe5o Table of Contents: 0:00 - Introduction 3:12 - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone 13:20 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 21:00 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 40:43 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 1:07:08 - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 1:31:13 - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 1:57:17 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 2:34:16 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 2:56:34 - Conclusion I did not mention this in the video, but the primary audience for this critique are people who are familiar with both the books and the films. People who have only seen the films will hopefully get a lot out of it too, but there are a couple of sections of the video that may confuse them because I don’t completely contextualize the book aspects I’m referring to. This is pretty rare though and overall I do make the video approachable for film-only people as I explain things from the book very often. Also, I misspoke in the DHII section and said that George died, but it was actually Fred. I am aware that there are some inconsistencies with the audio in this video and I apologize for that. The production process for this was long and arduous for a number of reasons (I started working on this in June of 2018), and that has resulted in it not being as totally technically polished as it could be. In the beginning I say that it has been seven years since DHII came out, when it’s actually been eight at the present.. which tells you how long I’ve been trying to get this out, lol. Despite that, I think it’s pretty well put together for a 3-hour video and I’m very happy with this passion project overall. I hope you enjoy. Sources for this video are linked in the description.

Also spot on about Hermione being given more than Ron. I hate how they dumbed down Ron and gave Hermione alot of his good moments. They treated Ron like comic relief in the movies and gave Hermione all the moments where Ron's growing up a wizard comes in handy.

Personally, I never liked Ron in either medium. There are multiple time this is shown but the best I think is in book six where the Trio get their O.W.L Grades. Harry gets several good grades, with the wizard equivalent of and A+ (O for Outstanding) in Defense Against the Dark Arts. When he sees Rons grades, while we never see the grades, Harry notes that 'there were no Oustanding's there...'. In addition to everything else, it seems to stamp that Ron is just Harry's lesser. It's just, Ron just never seems to be Harry's equal in anything meaningful (given the way his chess skills basically stop mattering after book one that doesn't count). In book two, the world building shifts from a physical view to a personal one, i.e. social structures, big names, and groups and their respective view. Ron fills in some of this, but his contribution to the hunt for Slytherins Heir is largely non-existant, and both in that book and over the course of the series, Hermione shows she knows just as much if not more about the wizarding world as he does, so he can't fully display his Wizard-born-veiw character very well either. We just repeatedly see him being lazy, outrageous, and insensitive when he isn't joking with Harry. Even most of his actions and accomplishmenst are doen't mostly to make him not an asshole and because it would cause issued for the reader to have Harry do (i.e. Buckbeaks trial).

I always took the "Nice one, James" line to be more demonstrative of how Sirius was certainly a father figure for Harry but had his own flaws too, in that he was never mature enough to father him completely. To me this just means that we the people we've loved and lost can't ever be replaced but we can always find pieces of them still left in our world.

Yes I 100% agree! We will always be reminded of them in other people and other things! Like sirius was probably having so much fun in that moment! Like reminiscing the good ole days when he and James would duel people! It’s amazing how much feeling that one little line has in it!

For me the "nice one James" is really sad. It shows how Sirius is still living in the past. He never got the time to move on from it with the time he spent in Askaban. And after he escaped from there he was on the run. (His relationship with Snape portraits this as well) It shows how Sirius is a flawed character, but at least for me it doesn't dampen how much he loves and cares for Harry.

If im being honest, the only time ive seen not staying true to the source material work is in how to train your dragon, an utter work of art in both the books and the films. This is genuinely a really good video but I feel like something that didn’t get attention was that the first film is aimed at an 11 year old and as the books do, the films grows up with the viewer, hence why the first films are more like a fantasy and the final are more like a struggle as it gets darker and closer to a much more adult goal than could have ever been imagined at the start
@mrkickass217 Жыл бұрын
Also having all child actors affects a director's choices, especially if the majority have never acted before. They had to use multiple cameras for each scene because they might have looked at one by accident, or they were constrained for daily film time, they had to choose the best angle, and they couldn't do another take. I believe that Columbus was a great first director because he was able to coach the actors and give them confidence. Columbus is like a coach for a young team in sports, he can develop a good culture, and give confidence to the players, he is not the coach to lead them to a championship, however.

I don’t really think a lot of it has to do with her acting ability (granted I haven’t seen other work from her so it could be that she’s just not a good actress). I think a lot of it has to do with how Ginny is written in the movies. In the books she’s an actual character, she’s funny, she has actual conversations with the trio, she’s dedicated to doing what’s right no matter the cost. In the movies we get none of that, she’s basically just written to be Harry’s love interest and it’s hard for an actress to bring life to a character that isn’t written as an actual character. Kind of similar to how people thought the main three actors from the twilight films were terrible actors but when they actually play characters that aren’t just teenage angst, they actually do have real talent.

I remember watching Half-Blood Prince in theatres and being very disappointed, expecting snappy pacing and hammy dialogue like Order of the Phoenix. Deathly Hallows Part I was similarly unimpressive when I first watched it. As you’ve laid out here, they are technically among the best in the series by several aspects, and in hindsight I really wish more blockbusters had such emotional focus and melancholic tone. You have a very nuanced view of the story and I am very glad you made this video.

The one problem I had with deathly hallows part 2 is the finale. I liked in the books how everyone watched Harry and Voldemort duel. I felt it was a much cooler ending to have everyone see the final blow and have it be like a duel atmosphere with an audience. I can’t describe anything else but that i thought that part of the book was better with everyone watching

Agreed, they should have landed in the great hall like in the book and Voldemort shouldn't have disintegrated, he should have just died, once again, like in the book. Would have been more thematically pleasing

Exactly my thoughts. The book scene was so much better and i absolutely loved Harry's final conversation with voldemort. Harry was so baddass in it! Everyone in the great hall watching them, holding their breath, listening and waiting for the moment. The suspence was real in that one let me tell you. Also Harry protecting Mrs. Weasley was one of my favorurite parts of that scene too.

My biggest beef with the entire adaptation is Voldemort's death. His whole things was that he wanted to become immortal, be more than a man. And In the book, he dies just like every other human. It's not just that it's different, it specifically goes against the whole idea that he died like a mortal man and nothing more. Pisses me tf off bruh

I actually disagree with your take on the final Dumbledore's Office scene in Order of the Phoenix. I think that not showcasing Harry's breakdown after the Battle of the Ministry does a huge disservice to both Harry and Dumbledore. It's such an incredibly human moment for both of them: Dumbledore, for it really and truly showcases how is he not the infallible powerful wizard we thought him to be as well as highlights the amount of care he has for Harry while the teenager is at his true lowest, so completely broken by the events of the past two years where he just wants out. Not to mention it would add more grief and reflection to Sirius' passing, which was something you mentioned you wished the film did more of.

I'd love, more than anything, to watch some alternate universe version of these films where Richard Harris got to stay on as Dumbledore. Personally I prefer him to Michael Gambon (although I do still really like his portrayal, just seems a little too aggressive constantly), and I'd love to see this much more charming kind caring version having to go into the cave, and seeing his death scene in HBP, and even having his King's Cross scene with Harry in DH. It'd be a great opportunity to see him tackle the darker side to the character. RIP.

Azkaban is probably my favourite film but contains a lot of issues. The location of Hagrid's hut, the common room and the Whomping Willow are already established in the previous films. Changing them now ruins the continuity of the series as a whole. The courtyard at the end of the wooden bridge is gone by DHp2 and out of nowhere a giant causeway sticking from the front of the castle appears! Harry doing magic outside of school in the first 30 seconds of the film?! Him doing the Lumos spell isn't mentioned but blowing up his aunt is? Moody, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs isn't explained at all. Not at any point is it revealed that these are the nicknames of his father and friends, thus the reason for creating the map. In OOTP when Harry says to Snape "They've got Padfoot" it doesn't mean anything to the characters or the audience because "Padfoot" hasn't been explained.

I personally thought the whole ‘Harry stealing Neville’s lollipop’ was the lollipop just getting stuck to the cloak lmao I never thought he’d steal it like that he ain’t THAT stupid
@Aleczandxr3 жыл бұрын
A few have said this as well but I don't buy that, personally. Either that or if that is the case, it isn't executed well. If you watch the scene, you’ll see that the lollipop is yanked out of Neville’s hand upward. It would not do that in that way if it simply got stuck to the cloak and got dragged along. So either 1) I’m correct and Harry stole it but it’s portrayed illogically, or 2) it got stuck, but the filmmakers portrayed that in the scene very badly. Either way it's bizarre execution. That’s why this scene is strange in that way. Not to mention, during the scene you can hear licking sound effects, which makes it pretty clear.

Regarding the layout of Hogwarts not being shown in the first movie, I think that's consistent with discovering the world through Harry's eyes, because if I remember correctly, Harry and Ron had trouble finding classrooms in their first year, so they were probably too fascinated by just being there to remember how connected that big and complicated castle is. Plus, this gave a chance to latter movies to explore (and change) the layout of the castle more and more.

Definitely, thanks for sharing. Someone’s said that to me before and it’s definitely a valid way to look at it if you take it that way, but I don’t personally buy into that - just the way I look at it. Since it’s clear that that’s coincidental rather than intended, they don’t go anywhere with that, they don’t use these disconnected sets in any way that I find interesting and that doesn’t really contribute to my enjoyment of the movie in any way. I think it’s great if people enjoy it because of this reasoning but personally a castle that flows better would have been a superior alternative to me.
@mlekcebw Жыл бұрын
@@Aleczandxr Actualy, I was about to say more-less same thing. First two movies, we, as an audience, are still exploring, together with Harry and a gang. So, it's stands to reason, that it's no need to understand whole castle at once. Actually, only when Map is introduced, we start to comprehend how big castle actually is. And same applies to books, so, I don't mind that it's not "flowing" in first two movies.

Woah. A three-hour harry potter video? I'm in. But in parts. Just saw the Philosopher's Stone part. See you tomorrow. First edit: Chamber of Secrets has a special place in my heart, don't know why. The movie improves a bit after PS and gets a bit darker. Christian Coulson did the best portrayal of young Tom Riddle, in my opinion. And we got to listen to John Williams's magical soundtrack one last time, because, although he also did PoA, looks like he got asked to not use anything from the past films. Second edit: I think Prisoner is the best movie, cinematically speaking. The direction is excellent. The aesthetic is brilliant. And the music is unique and fits comfortably in this movie. It works pretty well even as a standalone movie. But it has its flaws. And they have to do with the script. Of course, it's a longer book, and not all could possibly be fitted in the movie, but I think, like you, that the scene in the Shrieking Shack is crucial. The information about the marauders is obvious for us the readers, but a person who hasn't read the books will never know who they were. Harry using magic outside the school makes no sense, even when coming down the stairs like, 5 minutes later, Vernon specifically says he CAN'T do magic outside the school, as he would be expelled. Third edit: So, Goblet of Fire. I understand that the book has twice the size of Prisoner. A lot has to be left out. I don't think the movie is remarkable in any way. It's just decent. It's rushed and action packed. The visuals are pretty good. The music is OK. I think every composer did more or less a great job, and each one of them put in their style, but it would've been great to see a more stable series of movies (both director-speaking and musically-speaking). The Karkaroff scene when he suspiciously enters the goblet chamber makes absolutely not sense. I wish we had seen at least the Quidditch match. There are a couple of great scenes, though. I think Voldemort getting his body back it's pretty spot on. It would've been awesome if Voldemort looked like in 45:04. And then, obviously, the whole scene of Harry getting back to Hogwarts with Cedric's body, the band playing the Hogwarts March, everybody cheering, then people suddenly starting to realize what happened, and Amos's mourning. Fourth edit: I don't enjoy Yates's movies. Order seems pretty shallow to me. Cinematically speaking, it's good overall. It has a couple of good scenes. Music doesn't stand up but goes along with the movie and that's fine. From my POV (I'm not a cinematographer whatsoever), it lacks dialog and it lacks Harry's frustration. The climax of the movie is very good. The "nice one, James" scene is excellent: I thinks that it goes along with Sirius's character in the book, because though Sirius really cares about Harry, a little part of him thinks of Harry as a replacement for James, and the fact that he has been in Azkaban for 13 years, then two years on the run, and another year in captivity, emphasize this feeling. I don't like the fact that both death eaters and members of the order can fly, and that they cast like a black or white fog depending on which side are they on. I don't like Sirius's death (though I still haven't quite figured out his death in the book, with the veil). I wish they'd kept Harry's screams. Fifth edit: I finished the whole video. About Half-Blood Prince: I hate the filter. I would love to have seen the final battle, the remaining memories of Riddle, and Ginny's storyline and personality as it is in the books. About Harry and Ginny's romance, it kinda comes out of nowhere, but if I remember correctly, that also happens in the book, so I would've gone for maybe a little moment in OotP, with Ginny saying something to Harry and Harry standing there and maybe realizing something. Oh, and the burrow battle scene makes no sense. And about the last two: I quite enjoyed them. I've really liked the little nods to the books, like the mirror, Bill's injuries and such. It would have been great to see more about Lupin's character in the last book. Dobby's introduction seems kinda forced, just to add that moment of sadness at the end of Part 1. It would've been great to have seen more of him in previous films. The Gringotts scene is very well done, though I don't know why there are human policeman there. Only having the multiplication curse on Bellatrix's chamber it's not too dangerous, is it? The dragon is perfectly portrayed in my opinion. It has been on Gringotts God knows how long. It making it's way to freedom, stopping to catch a breath, and then trying to fly is spot on. It would have been great so see more about Dumbledore's past and regrets. About the battle: very well done, cinematically excellent. Molly killing Bellatrix doesn't make much sense, even in the books. It should've been Neville. We should have seen Fred's death and Percy's redemption, though it hasn't been properly set up in previous films. But then... Bellatrix and Voldemort just dying in a "I don't wanna go, Mr Stark" way? That's bullshit. The whole point of killing Voldemort is to see his body lying on the ground, motionless. And Bellatrix? Makes even less sense, giving that she really is just a mortal human person. I think that the final battle between the two should have been the way it was in the books. I understand it's not very exciting to see (just two people walking around in circles and talking, while the rest just watch), but the final battle, from Voldy kicking Harry, to they hugging and falling and flying a little bit, to watching the same battle that we've seen in GoF and OotP, doesn't do anything for me. Finally, it would have been nice to see Harry having a final chat with Dumbledore's portrait, and fixing his wand with the elder wand. The epilogue was just like in the books, nothing to say about it, though it was nice to hear Williams's theme one last time. I hope this makes some sense. English is not my first language and writing a full review of the eight films wasn't easy, lol. Excellent video. Cheers from Argentina!

A couple of years ago I binged all the hp movies and books. I would read the book first and then watch the respective movie. It definitely took away from the enjoyment i had when watching the films, simply because there was so much stuff left out which lead to several plot holes and inconsistencies in the movies. I still like them though. It's just that i like the most faithful adaptions of the books the most, meaning that i consider hp 1, 2 and 7.1 + 7.2 the best movies in the hp franchise. I know that a lot of people love the prisoner of azkaban but I never liked the darkness this third installment introduced to the movie goers. Hp never was so dark and gritty, it had many funny and relaxing moments too which were pretty much absent in the later movies. Maybe if the franchise got the Game of thrones treatment one day it could turn out better than the movies. Long story short, i think i would have gotten a lot more out of this video when i did the aforementioned marathon on the series, but I'll still glady watch what you have to say. I know I'm three years late. This was an excellent analysis, and I enjoyed it immensely. One thing I wish to point out: As you say, this series took something like a decade in real time to play out over the eight movies. When they had started, the most recent book was either Order of the Phoenix or Goblet of Fire (I want to say it was Goblet of Fire as that's when the hype really ramped up, and when I picked up the book series as a teenager.) It's extremely easy to be critical of the prioritization decisions made in earlier movies that had to be somehow worked around later in the series (i.e Dobby, Bill and Fleur, etc.) but remember that no one really knew how the series was going to turn out, or what characters were going to be important. As a fandom we were only just beginning to really realize just how detail oriented and interconnected the series would be. As a result, decisions were made based on what seemed to be most important vis a vis story beats at the time. I fully agree that a TV series would be the ideal way to tackle this story, as the serialization would allow for certain beats to be emphasized in the right way and at the right time. Again, wonderful assessment and my only complaints are the ones mentioned above. Do keep up the excellent work.

Part of me is still hoping for a Netflix series, where they can go into detail book by book. I almost 100% agree with the ranking, except I think DH is worthy of a higher rank, purely because of its story, and the fact that I was satisfied with the ending (which is rare with a franchise). Nit Pick: Domhnall is pronounced 'doe- nal' (Irish names are bizarre). I'm very grateful that I had a hangover and had the time and lack of desire to move to watch this!

If HP gets a Netflix series, maybe it can be animated a la Green Eggs and Ham? I don't know why, but the earlier HP books really gave me that cartoony vibe. Also, maybe bring David Newman to score the series, as he was a student of John Williams and his particular style for some reason fits the HP world about as well as Williams' scores or the video game scores.

So the time setting has always been a bit hazy with the movies. Yes the books are set in the 90s, but the movies it's never really said. There are plenty of other things that seem to indicate the movies are taking place in the 2000s. For example, the scene where they're in the London Underground, Harry's pass and the turnstiles are modern to what they were in the late 2000s not the 90s. Also things like some of the clothes. It's murky when it's supposed to actually be taking place. There's even a theory that helps explain why Snape, Lupin, Black and other characters of Harry's parents generation look older than they in theory should be (as do Harry's parents in visions); it's that in movie-continuity Harry's parents didn't have a child until later on. Late 20s instead of their early 20s.

Absolutely. Also, I'd like to point out that despite the incredibly well executed video, he calls The Millennium Bridge "London Bridge". It goes without saying but those are 2 different bridges (amongst the many) in London.

I feel like Prisoner of Azakaban directed by Alfonso Cuaron truly captured the magical and creepy vibe that the books had. The story itself is probably the most well written out of the series but the movie truly sets the perfect tone and aesthetic. IMO David Yates kinda made the series more generic.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: We need more action! Set the burrow on fire and have them fight the death eaters with no consequence. Also: Remove the battle of the astronomy tower. Like whut? Definitely should have done the opposite in my opinion.

1. Chamber of Secrets (I'm sorry, but book accuracy is so important to me, and I love the sets and colors. The last 5 minutes, from Lucius trying to kill Harry on, is pretty bad, I will admit. 9 out of 10) 2. Prisoner of Azkaban (the best made film, but I hate how much they changed the castle, there's no continuity in the movies and I hate it. Imagine if the design of the Millennium Falcon was changed in the 3rd Star Wars movie! 9 out of 10) 3. Sorcerer's Stone (it was the intro to the HP world, it's super cute, and really book accurate. 8.9 out of 10) 4. Deathly Hallows Part 2 (this one would be higher if they fixed a lot of smaller things, like young Lily's eye color and actually mentioning Harry's cloak was a Deathly Hallow! 8.7 out of 10) 5. Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Same thing as Part 2, if they fixed a lot of the little things it'd be higher. 8.5 out of 10) 6. Half Blood Prince (left too much important stuff out seemingly intentionally! 8 out of 10) 7. Goblet of Fire (too messy and doesn't flow. Graveyard scene was great. 7.6 out of 10) 8. Order of the Phoenix (Opposite of Chamber. Chamber's last 5 minutes were bad but the rest was good, this one the last 20 minutes is great, but not enough to save it from the first part. 7.5 out of 10) 9. Fantastic Beasts (cute but messy. 6.9 out of 10) 10. Crimes of Grindelwald (it's bad. 5 out of 10) 11. Cursed Child (PURE GARBAGE! (besides one or two good parts) 3 out of 10)

I largely agree, but I'd put Deathly Hallows part 1 higher on the list, it's a lot more faithful to the book than part 2.

Order of the Phoenix has always had a special place in my heart because when I was little I used to love the idea of being a rebel in school and breaking the rules. I still love it now and I think it gets a bit too much hate. I somewhat understand the rest of your list though

Now I love the movies but I've always wondered would it have been better as a TV series, rather than movies They could've focused way more on the details and gotten everything right with it. Done a season per book and each chapter or 2 was an episode depending on the length of the book. It wouldve appealed to me a bit better so I could experience the magic of the books on screen but the movies were good enough

I always took issue with Harry’s son being named after Snape over Sirius. Sirius is his beloved godfather, Severus tortured and belittled him for almost a decade(even if he was protecting him the whole time)

I have no idea why people love snape so much as a character especially if you’ve read the books. He was an asshole character with few moments of decency sprinkled throughout. He had a crappy redemption. Is everyone forgetting that the main reason he defected and joined Dumbledore was to save Lily. Not James or baby harry just the girl he could never get over.

You know, I LOVE listening to critiques of the Harry Potter films. It's my favorite series of all time. I'm someone with a childhood that could relate to Harry's alot and those movies really helped me. Watching him I didn't feel so alone in my struggles. For those main reasons and more, this is my favorite movie series of all time. That being said, I didn't know if I could sit through a 3 hour video of it. Now I'm 30 mins in and loving your voice and how thorough it is. I already don't want it to end lmao. Respect for the time put into the video too. This is amazing

My favourite movie has changed over time. The second one used to be my favourite, because it was still a lighter version, because I really loved Ginny in that one for some reason and it just made me happy. The first 2 were the only ones I could understand enough when I started watching them (I started watching with my brothers when I was around 3. It's like the matrix and the lord of the rings. I didn't like them because I didn't understand them. I watched them too young. And now they're my absolute favourite movies, especially lord of the rings lmao) Then when I was around 13-14 the 4th was my favourite. Partly because of the score, I love John Williams but Patrick Doyle is extremely underrated imo.... The goblet of fire is fire. And partly because it's more about teen drama. The 3rd was my favourite for a while. It's just a very peaceful film for some reason.... I don't know why, cause a lot happens, but it's just very peaceful, It is shot beautifully. And the score is fantastic, the buckbeak scene... My god. I almost did a project in high school trying to explain why that scene perfectly describes freedom, why you feel freedom while watching it. Yea I absolutely love it. I absolutely love it. Though I adore the last ones, they've never been my favourite. They're great, but very dark and serious, which is understandable, but except for the deathly hallows part 2 they were all a little too... Idk... Grey? A lot happens, yet at the same time it feels like nothing happens. It's strange. I think at this point in time the first one may be my favourite one. I know that that's not a popular opinion, but the feelings I get while watching it are great. Especially the last scene where they're going on the train and Harry says "I'm not going home, not really"... aaaaahhhh, it gets me every time. Especially with the music playing as well. The music just makes me very happy. All the themes that are getting set up, even though they end up not really getting used through the whole franchise, it's still great. It works very well. And the way everything is set up is great as well, the magic is new, the magic is truly magical. In the later films magic is 'normal' in the first one it's truly set up as a miracle. Everything seems miraculous. It's a film full of wonder. It's just a movie that makes me happy. It's like a new start for Harry. Or rather the start of his actual life. He finally feels like he belongs and has people that love him very much, he can finally live a life. It just makes me happy.

Kind of shocked HBP is your 3rd favorite. It’s easily my least favorite. It focuses so much more on the romance part, which was such a bad direction imo. It was not even a big part in the book. It was just meant to back up the much darker stuff going around in the wizarding world and they don’t even do the romance right. Herrmione and McGlaggen was unnecessary, no one cares about Lavender and Ron and what the hell happened to Harry and Ginny? When I think about the HBP book, I think about the private lessons with Dumbledore, the Draco plotline, the HBP book mystery and the darkness going around in the Wizarding World. When I think of the film, I think of bad boring romance. It’s a shame as the book is my favorite one and the film genuinely does a lot of things well. I think the first and last 45 minutes truly understand the book really well. The 55 minutes though was done badly
