Yay, it's a story with a person I'm named after in it! Also, I love your turban. 😊 Something strange and random: While listening my brain randomly thought, "There must be a word for daughter-in-law in Chinese too, I wonder why I never learned it," and so I looked it up and it is 媳，which is made up of two components, the first being 'woman' and the second being "rest, put a stop to, end, cease'. Then I remembered that there is a verb (kalah) in Hebrew that sounds almost the same as 'daughter-in-law' (kallah) which means 'complete' or 'finish'... Is this coincidence? Or could there be something cultural in common here?

My guess would be that it's coincidence. There's not a clear enough semantic link between 'daughter-in-law'/'bride' and the verb 'to complete/finish' to make me suspect they derived from the same root. And more importantly, the verb כלה would have historically derived from verb root kly, while the noun כלּה would probably come from noun root kall. Whether there's any semantic link in the Chinese that might account for that second radical appearing in the character for 'daughter-in-law', I wouldn't be able to say :)

@@AlephwithBeth Oh man, it looked like someone wrote about the derivation of the Chinese character 媳, but unfortunately, the comment seems to have disappeared. I really, really wish I had good dictionaries with extensive etymologies for both Chinese and Hebrew. Not the kind of thing you can really find online. Even if the verb כלה and the noun כלּה aren't related etymologically, in my mind the similar sound is still a good mnemonic for these two words, since the "bride" was the last thing made before God "finished" creation. 😊

Native Chinese here Your finding sounds interesting to me. But there's difference here: 媳 can generally mean married woman, not strictly daughter-in-law but also sister-in-law or even just wife.

When you said “ויאכל צדקיהו זרע” that made me laugh; זרע means something *very* different in colloquial Modern Hebrew.

"Lahem" instead of "lehem" is just a pronunciation trick to emphasize an idea, right? In this case, to stress the contrast between the situation in Egypt with that of other lands? Thank you!!

Sometimes vowels change at the end of a verse or sentence, or among items in a list. “Lahem” instead of “lehem” is just the form used at the end of the verse (“pausal”). Imagine that the ends of sentences were stressed more-so it retains long vowels that were shortened (among other changes) elsewhere.
