There are so many cities that were burned or bombed and had to figure out how to rebuild and use that as an opportunity to identify themselves. I'm glad to see you enjoyed a visit to my home city. I just want to add some context to the picture at 3:45. That ship actually belonged to Kaiser Wilhelm II of the German Empire. Kaiser Wilhelm was a good friend of Norway and made frequent visits multiple places in Norway. Like you said, the city was almost completely burned down. But then only 3 days later, Kaiser Wilhelm shows up with a small fleet of supplies for the approximately 10 000 people who had just turned homeless. Not only did he provide supplies, but he was also central in the reconstruction of the entire city. And this time in stone instead of wood. I sometimes tell this story to people who criticize Wilhelm II for being a terrible leader. Wilhelm could have easily turned a blind eye to what was an unknown town in Norway, but instead he shows up with supplies only a couple days later, and helps rebuild a city. I have some historical pictures of Kaiser Wilhelm standing on top of Aksla (the mountain hovering over the city), and inspecting the damages. Ålesund is a small city, but this particular history is a hidden gem that not many people outside of Norway knows about. It's a shame, because it shows that Wilhelm II had some good qualities to him.
@welltravelledlife3 ай бұрын
Isn’t that almost always the truth? There are shades of goodness in everyone - even the worst of us. Finding ways to celebrate the goodness that does exist is an important part of understanding humanity. What a great story you’ve told here. We love that you’ve shared it. Alesund looks like such a beautiful part of Southern Norway, on our recent cruise to Norway, sadly this wasn't on our Itinerary, so I need to make sure if we cruise there again, we need to make sure this is one of our ports of call as it looks stunning.
@welltravelledlife Жыл бұрын
Ålesund is a pretty typical port, so I would expect you won't have to go to great lengths to find a cruise that stops there. Bergen, and Molde seem to be the other ports nearby. It will be interesting to see how Norway's environmental laws will impact the cruise industry. More of the small ports like Geiranger are moving towards banning cruise ships. People will have to drive in, or go by electric ferry - both of which are great - though the electric ferry allows you the views of the spectacular waterfalls along the fjord.

My GF and I are visiting her cousin near Oslo this Saturday (May 11) and have 3 nights Airbnb in Alesund Sunday - Wednesday. We’ll have her cousin’s car but would rather hire a driver to takes us to Trollstigen and back for the day. Can you ballpark the amount we should offer or expect to pay? $300 USD for 3 of us for the day seem possible? If very expensive I’ll opt to drive the 3 of us. So VERY excited for this trip and celebrating 🇳🇴 Norway Independence Day in Oslo on May 17 before flying back home. Brilliant video which we’re modeling our adventure from. Thank you!!!

For a couple reasons, we think you should splurge and hire a driver (give Knut a call!) first of all, it’s a tricky drive, but even more importantly, the driving takes so much focus, you will totally miss the views. Do yourselves a favor and let someone else concentrate on the road while you get lost in the landscapes. We paid Knut $500 for the full day (that included a hefty tip). I think you could offer $350 and tell him you saw the video. He’s had other guests do that and he enjoys giving them “our” tour. You’re going to love Alesund!!

Fair warning. Trollstigen is closed for the rest of 2024. You are not allowed to walk or drive there at all. Huge boulders keep coming down. Hit a car, driver was fine, but it was close. So they will need to make it safe, before it opens again in 2025. You can always go around to the other side. Valldal, not Åndalsnes. There you can at least get to the top, the lookout and see Trollstigen.
@welltravelledlife3 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh! We knew it was perilous, but hadn’t heard about the recent boulder accidents. I’m glad there is a plan to make it safe. The back side is equally beautiful and I’d think it’s still worth it to get to the top that way - as long as the weather is good enough to get a view down. Thanks for the update!

@@erlendgars Being off by 130 km is not being nit picky! We seriously appreciate that it's being watched carefully enough for someone to catch mistakes. And we appreciate that you took the time to comment and correct us. We love this city and hope our video did it justice.

You can take a bus tour, van tour, or a taxi up to the top of the Trollstigen.

Important! Trollstigen is closed due to avalanche risks out the rest of 2024 and maybe further so I recommended looking it up before you go there.

Oh my gosh! I hate to hear that! Can you go up the back way?

We admit it, we're SEO losers. We just don't get it. And we probably should hire somebody, but we've done this thing on our own. We're constantly learning and hope that we'll continue to grow as photographers, editors, and even SEO gurus. The SEO part just hasn't been our priority. We've been more focused on travelling, filming and editing.
