5:10 Sir Alex Ferguson did exactly the same thing with Ritchie de Laet. He signed for Stoke and moved in with a family I know. They would often take in new recruits for the club who were deemed too young to live alone. He told them he was actually signing for Man United and wouldn't be at Stoke long. Sure enough 18 months later, despite barely featuring for the Potters, he signed for Man United in what was seen as a total surprise. Royal Antwerp wanted more money from United than they would demand from Stoke. A quick call to Tony Pulis and it was problem solved for Ferguson.

He has been quite good, much quieter than Taylor (though who isn’t?) but very reliable. Scored a goal early doors this season too. As well as Surman signing for Portland, the two footed keeper Alex Paulsen behind him signed for Bournemouth. Hopefully a name that will be more well known soon! Thanks Fergie!

I actually think Will Keane's return to full fitness and regular Championship football is one of the most remarkable comeback stories the game has ever seen. It's up there with Shaun Barker even returning to the pitch at all, in 2016 for Burton, after literally four years recovering from a horror injury that would have retired 99.999% of players on the spot - and Craig Gordon's return to international duty in his early forties, of course. And Sam Hutchinson's return from literally being retired at 21, whereupon he forged a solid career for himself...but honestly, I had no doubt whatsoever in 2016 that Will Keane would be forced into early retirement and find himself walking a very lonely, dark path in life haunted by the ghosts of what should have been. I smile any time I see his name on a team sheet - whatever good he gets from this game, he truly deserves.

You said what I've been thinking for some time - after Fergie left, we tried every possible type of manager: a PL veteran, a proven winner, a club legend and a promising manager who can work with youth. And none of them achieved any long time success. So at this point, I don't even know what manager would work for us. We could (hypothetically of course) get Guardiola or Klopp and they would still fail. I'm sure Amorim is very talented by I'm not convinced that he can fix this mess.

Decline started after Ronaldo’s exit. Never properly replaced Ronaldo. Also, never found a way to replace or phase out legends like Scholes, Giggs, Neville, or later Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic and Carrick. Made bets on Smalling, Jones, Rafael, Fabio, Cleverley, and others. A lot of the poor recruitment since then can be explained, in part, by players being reluctant to go to a declining and unstable ManUtd. If you look at all of United’s academy players of the last 10-15 years, it’s embarrassing how poorly the club has recruited. Pogba, Rashford, Greenwood are all elite talents and huge assets who should have been “looked after”. Considering the fees required to sign elite players (two of whom are forwards = $$$$), they should have had full-time counselors and “chaperones” employed to keep an eye on these guys. Beyond that; D Welbeck, T Clev, M Keane, J Lingard, J Garner, A Gomes, J Evans, S McTominay, A Januzaj could all have been at least squad players (or sold for a decent fee) who we didn’t really improve upon with our signings. Not to mention proven elite players we signed for big money and then squandered… DiMaria and Mata come to mind. DiMaria could’ve been a Utd legend on the RW for the last 10 years. After what happened with Greenwood I hope they are looking after Mainoo, Garnacho, Hojlund, and Yoro.

only a 1/4 through but pretty bang on so far - However even though I'm not the biggest fan of the way Ineos make their money (not much I can do about that as a fan though is there? We just have to accept it as it's not our choice as fans who owns the club and where their money comes from) All I can say is that I feel Sir Jim has correctly identified that the roots of this club have become antiquated and fallen behind almost every other big club in Europe since Fergie left the up till now hadn't re-invested in facilities or anything like all the other clubs around Europe which is why Ronaldo was bemused when he came back to find everything 'was the same' At least Ineos looking at a new stadium and new Carrington (and us having one of the best youth teams going at the moment) gives Amorim a real chance to grow the club and drag it kicking and screaming in-line with the rest of the other teams in Europe for the first time since Fergie left. Because all these injuries and such and 0 investement by the Glazers into the training facilities and such have been the real reason I think that the club has fallen behind the other clubs in Europe since Fergie left, because as you said, it certainly isn't down to the lack of types of managers we've tried! 🙏 I'm excited to see what the best young manager in world football (arguably with Xabi as well) is going to do with the club, but I'm all for having another fiery dynamic Portugese Manager on the sidelines after the personality-vacuum that was Erik Ten Haag, who didn't ever stir the fire in my loins as a supporter in the same way some of our past managers have. To recap though, Fergie's strongest ability as a manager was to get 250% out of every player in what was quite an average sqaud when he left - when Moyes could only get a 100% from the same players we realised how amazing SAF was at man-management and putting out a team and squaeezing every bit of talent and more from every player under him. Even the recent Nicky Butt and Scholes podcast says he's the only manager who could drop you and make you feel so hyped for when he put you back in the team in 2 weeks time cos 'he was gonna need you son'. Brilliant one of a kind coach.

Unpopular opinion about SAF: If he’d stayed as manager past 2013, Manchester United would still be in a similar situation they are now. The glazer’s priorities of the football club were already starting to show in SAF’s last season in the club, which was a team mostly consisting of still good but aging players that had been the base of the team for 10-20 years. The club has been rotting to the core in the last decade being focused more on being a franchise and brand than a football team, something that shows from the bad business decisions being made with transfers to the aging training ground and leaky stadium. Hopefully it’s something INEOS can turn around.

Man Utd have had at least 10 different managers in total since Alex Ferguson retired back in 2013 which is contrary to the vision of them being a non sacking club the reality is that Furgson consistently built successful teams that won major honours on a consistent basis which is why he lasted as long as he did it remains to be seen whether Amorim will finally be the man to fill in the void that the club has been crying out for since Ferguson departed but i suspect that the issues plaguing the club for the best part of a decade run deeper than simply the manager the entire club has been terribly run from top to bottom which has had a negative impact on the club both on and off the field which even this new manager despite his success elsewhere may even struggle to turnaround at least in the short time but only the furure will tell whether his tenure leads to major success or not

I'm never impressed by big clubs so called homegrown talent philisophy. The only reason why clubs like Ajax, Anderlecht, Brugge, Feyenoord, PSV, ... can't hold on to their talent is cause they don't even have the money to compete with say Dortmund. Despite that their conveyor belt is impressive. I would rate these clubs ability to raise homegrown talent far more than clubs like man city, man utd, chelsea, bayern, ... .
