Edit April 2023: Removed the song at 2:13 because of Copyright so it's dead silent, sorry about that. The song was a track from the movie "Up" You can probably guess which one. This isn't even all of it, if you want a few more check out his twitter profile: twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/1537314312926003201 This shit is comedy gold but it also sucks that they're so restrictive lol. I mean we can allow body horror and plenty of horror imagery but can't say "poopface" or have gay characters? Lmao ok Disney

What does S&P mean?
@Elliandr
@Elliandr 10 ай бұрын
@@Arlojay-bw3vp S&P means "Standards and Practices" and is a division in a company (in this case Disney) that decides what can and cannot be aired. Think of them as their censors. By saying that a party is "Not S&P Approved" you are saying that things go on at the party which the censors would not want aired on television. So literally anything that could possibly be the subject of censorship might be going on there. Note that what distinguishes television from streaming services is the lack of an S&P Department which drives viewership, but that's starting to change because S&P also caters to advertisers. KZbin is particularly focused on satisfying advertisers which is why they've gone so far downhill in recent years. In this context think of the S&P as a plague that sucks the life out of genuine creativity. They become so focused on brand image and the opinions of the vocal minority that they significantly add costs to the creative process and in many cases cancel entire projects people love.

See, I was in a similar boat back when all I knew of the S&P story was "'Not S&P Approved' has been approved by S&P" Seeing a larger chunk of the exchange where they try to veto the pisstake only for Hirsch to say "what's your reasoning then" shows that they're not computers, just assholes, because they tried it, but still know they can't use "you have to remove it because we don't wanna be made fun of" as an excuse. Which honestly just makes it so much funnier than them just approving the change, because Hirsch stared them down with the ultimatum of "you either have to fight for the original script or approve us making fun of you, good luck fuckers"

@@dooplon5083 The thing is if Disney REALLY cared about, they would nix it outright. They certainly wouldn't let them declare their love for one like they did at the end of the series. Disney has pretty much allowed some form of LGBT rep in all their shows for the 10 years (in some cases it was a requirement). It's really hard to keep up the "Disney censors LGBT" narrative when they clearly aren't.
@dooplon5083
@dooplon5083 Ай бұрын
@@schorltourmaline4521 I think you're forgetting the fact that this show ended _8 years ago_ and you're saying that they were putting more LGBT into their shows starting _10._ While I can assume that you were just rounding up there, theres also the fact that it ran for 4 years, premiering back in 2012, meaning that there is no "narrative" to speak of, it was just a fact back then. The fact that Alex himself has even shown direct messages from Disney's standards and practices department and they complained about them acting gay is proof enough that times changed since the show started airing. In other words, Gravity falls walked so that The Owl House and Amphibia and all the other Disney LGBT rep could run
@schorltourmaline4521

@@dooplon5083 Did he "Show" actual letters, or did he say they happened with no physical evidence. If it is the former, where can I find these, cause I've ONLY ever seen second hand sources (and Alex counts as a second hand source). Did I say ended? I spoke correctly when I said ten, cause the cops were still gay characters from the start (funny, you don't seem to trust Alex on that part. Don't worry, I have a cherry tree myself, so I know the joys of picking them). Even if I wanted to follow your idea that Disney has been easing people into the LGBT stuff over years, the issue is that people to this day will sill claim disney is against it. I got into an argument the other day with someone with that mind frame, even after point out all the shows disney has that feature openly gay characters. Heck, Star Vs. also had openly gay characters, and came out at the same time. That really seems to bust your idea that GF was the first of it's kind, when other shows were doing the same thing. If you want to point to a catalyst to all this, it's not even show. It's just that Steven Universe happened, and companies saw that people actually liked it. Sure, Disney might have wanted to dip their toes int he water after they saw CN dive in, but they were not afraid in the slightest to take the metaphorical swim.

Dana, creator of the Owl House, confirmed via Twitter that it was mainly due to the network wanting more nonserialized shows and TOH was super serialized compared to stuff like Amphibia. That being said it probably didn't help that the show was dark, banned in certain countries due to LGBT content, and that the company had taken a hit during CoVid and needed to make up lost revenue. Since Owl House had yet to explode, since Season 1s big episodes hadn't aired yet and the show wasn't on Disney+ at the time, it sadly drew the short straw.

To be fair, it *is* the censors job to be like that. But also, it's a stupid job, has little place in creative writing, and they need to stop taking it so seriously. It's not our fault there aren't any publishers left on earth willing to make western animations for older teens.

As an explaination for why that won't happen until Disney has a complete restructuring, is that each film, cartoon, and anything else has a specific age bracket they're categorised into, and each age category receives funding based on how much money those categories produces. For example, if 15 year olds were responsible for 25% of Disney revenue, Disney would alot 24%~ of their budget to media made for 15 year olds. The issue arises when a show made for 8-15 year olds (Gravity falls), also has a large chunk of 21 year olds watching it. Meaning that show would be carrying the weight of funding both age categories while only receiving funding for media in the 8-15 category. Obviously the corporate heads of that category don't want to be carrying the weight of a different category while not being funded for it, so they'll do stuff like the things in this video to prevent 21 year olds from being able to enjoy the show. Obviously, anyone working on the show hates to intentionally make their show unenjoyable for a group of people, but corporations are gonna corporate

It's a shame he was too busy actually making the show and having to respond to all the other complaints to have any spare time to drag the mousecorp archives and find all of their existing, still ruthlessly monetised properties that have similarly "problematic" (or far worse) characters and situations in them to hold up as precedent. (And yeah, maybe standards have changed, but if so, maybe you shouldn't be selling the older titles with those issues in any more? ... hmm, maybe that's the real drive behind all the CGI "re-imaginings" of their classic 2D stuff?) And in any case, how is that even problematic in the first place? There's plenty of other cartoons, almost certainly including Disney ones, which have devilish depictions in them. And very definitely bible-bashing toons must have some mention in there, even if just as a boogeyman. If perhaps they were clearly promoting the commonly held idea of what satanic practices are, there might be some paperthin grounds for the argument, but just having a character called that isn't really any harm.

The funniest thing about this is all those things they tried to change would be noticed by adults instead of children. I remember going back and watching various shows and noticing all the adult jokes I missed. My parents never explained them to me so I never noticed. Kid shows sometimes had adult jokes because adults usually had to sit in the same room as their children while they watched, and adults needed to be entertained, too. That concept was definitely lost to these "S+P" people.

To be fair, disney doesn't care about children, they only care about parents being upset about what their children are watching. They'd sacrifice millions of children in a lovecraftian ritual if it gave them an extra penny.

Makes sense but despite the fact that the jokes aren't gonna get noticed by kids, they sometimes go so far with adult appeal that they lose sight of the kid audience. I can't remember a single joke in Shrek, Bee Movie, Animaniacs, or Rocco's Modern Life that I can see a kid understanding tbh. Gravity Falls didn't have that issue, though, even some of the jokes that S&P objected to like "poopface" would be hilarious to kids.

Walt’s rolling in his grave! The man himself HATED the idea that animation was just “kid stuff”, and always wanted to push the boundaries of what animation was capable of. Night on Bald Mountain, Pink Elephants on Parade, Bambi’s mom, etc. Fantasia was Disney’s first film made primarily for adults, the stuff Walt always wanted to make in the first place. Fantasia was Walt’s dream project, and he was utterly crushed and devastated that it wasn’t a financial success… If your company’s founder and namesake’s magnum opus was Night on Bald Mountain, a cartoon centered around the Satanic Chernabog and his Hellish minions (including harpies with exposed, nippled breasts!), S+P has no excuse to get offended over “poopface”… BTW, how in the world did some of Disney's early stuff get past the 1930s/1940s censors!? This was the era when the Hays Code was strictly enforced, yet Disney animation got away with a LOT of stuff the Hays Code had banned (Pinocchio's villains getting away with their crimes, the nudity in Night on Bald Mountain, etc.). Perhaps even back then, the industry didn't take animation seriously and never bothered to enforce the Hays Code for a buncha "silly cartoons". The more things change, the more they stay the same... Edit: to the people accusing Walt of antisemitism: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney#Personality_and_reputation "Disney has been accused of antisemitism for having given Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl a tour of his studio a month after Kristallnacht, something he disavowed three months later, claiming he was unaware who she was when he was issued the invitation. None of Disney's employees-including the animator Art Babbitt, who disliked Disney intensely-ever accused him of making antisemitic slurs or taunts. The Walt Disney Family Museum acknowledges that ethnic stereotypes common to films of the 1930s were included in some early cartoons but also points out that Disney donated regularly to Jewish charities, was named "1955 Man of the Year" by the B'nai B'rith chapter in Beverly Hills, and his studio employed a number of Jews, some of whom were in influential positions.” “Neal Gabler, the first writer to gain unrestricted access to the Disney archives, concludes that the available evidence does not support accusations of antisemitism and that Disney was "not [antisemitic] in the conventional sense that we think of someone as being an antisemite". Gabler concludes that "though Walt himself, in my estimation, was not antisemitic, nevertheless, he willingly allied himself with people who were antisemitic [meaning some members of the MPAPAI], and that reputation stuck. He was never really able to expunge it throughout his life, even when Disney distanced himself from the MPAPAI in the 1950s."

This entire comment has ballooned into a very long comment, so I don't blame you for completely ignoring what could have been a very short comment, replying to another very short comment, I just felt like touching every base of the argument. I basically just said that you shouldn't ignore what someone has to say just because they have a problematic belief that has nothing to do with the conversation. @@TheKingsPride He was also born in the 1900s, likely with a family that had those kind of beliefs, it's easy to see someone from that time and say that's problematic, but it was also a condition of being raised in the 1900s. His more timeless beliefs shouldn't be ignored just because he hated a minority group/s, (He might've hated more, I'm honestly not that knowledgeable on Walt, I just felt like going on a rant about how we shouldn't ignore what someone has to say about something just because they have problematic beliefs) we still idolize people who owned slaves for their more noteworthy achievements, and ignore the fact they were slave owners because they actually had something to say other than that they believed that a minority was less than a human. I'm not trying to say that hating jews isnt problemstic, far from it, it leads to a problematic mindset of holding one set of people higher than another, and in turn, cause a seperation between individuals, but that has nothing to do with what someone thinks animation should and could be. Seperate art from the artist as they say, we can look at people almost as if dissecting them, admire the parts that made them good, and admonish what made them bad. Now, I've got a Dad who's incredibly skeptic, he once went on a whole talk about how paper money was going to be out of date in the next 4 years, (It was about 2017 he said that) and how the economy was going to be vastly changed, do I think he's a little crazy? yeah. Do I still love him despite his craziness? of course, he has plenty of other things going for him.
