Happy to see Alex has downgraded a lot of his free solos to an acceptable grade - I nearly shit my pants simply watching him free solo "Freerider" 5.13+ - over twenty years of committed climbing and I have yet to even top rope a 13! An amazing climb to be sure - I think for most climbers, getting married and having a kid definitely lends a different perspective to the idea of solo climbing. I hope Alex lives a long and happy life!!! Too many wonderful climbers die before their time - notably fellow Canadian Alpinist, Marc Andre LeClerc - RIP. too many others to mention here....BTW: I am in no way stating that free soloing 5.8 is safe. One of the earliest solo climbers I followed back in the 80s was a British climber named Derek Hersey....he died in 1993 while soloing the Steck/Salathe route down in Yosemite - only five or six pitches of 5.9 / 10a on this 18-pitch climb, but well within his ability - stay safe folks - cheers !!!

Alex, unique solo climber, and the older he gets, the more nerdy que seems to be. I think his brain/psyquis is different from mots people. He expresses little emotion, he is super rational which allows him to speak of topics in a straight total honest way with no filters (like death as "consequence" of not executing accurately and effectively the climb.) which for the most of us would sound kind of shocking

@fakecubed9 ай бұрын
Good question. I know for a lot of people, they're scared of roller coasters because they're not in control of what happens. They're on a track and it's going to take them where it takes them. Whereas a free solo climber would feel in control of every single movement.
@runr1009 ай бұрын
@@fakecubedFree solo climbers also know that not everything that happens is within their control. Rocks can give way. Alex's brain doesn't experience fear the way ours does. His amygdala stays relaxed when ours would freak out. That was in Free Solo.
