He is certainly one of the greatest guitarists in rock generally. But his two bandmates included quite possibly the greatest drummer in all of rock history (as well as a noted lyricist), and one of the greatest bassists in all of rock (in addition to a reasonably good singer and a good keyboardist).

My band did our last record with their producer, David Leonard. Rush had just finished recording Vapor Trails and still had their gear in the studio. David said the entire time the band was recording there Geddy and Alex spoke in a Hogan's Heroes type German accent. He said they wouldn't break character even when they took a break and went to lunch.

I recorded their New Orleans show on the Hold Your Fire tour and during 'Temples of Syrinx' Alex kinda went bonkers. When Geddy sang "the gifts of life..." Alex blurted out "ARE FREE!" then Geddy sang "...are held within these walls" Alex replied "oh yeah, that's it". Love those guys. Great musicians with great senses of humor. They opened that showed with the Three Stooges Theme including "Helloooo, hellooo, hellooo - HELLO".

He's the lead guitar player for one of the most popular - unyielding - deeply talented rock bands in the history of music. Playing music together longer than some musicians are even alive on the planet. I'd say he pretty much hit his 'calling' right between the eyes! And I think we are all better people for getting to watch that happen.
