I was in hospital in North York for a week and one of my nurses was Alex's mom. Sometime after Farewell to Kings. She asked me if I'd heard of her son, I told her I had a poster of him on my wall at home!

One of my favorite guitarists. Melodic, great song writer, great rhythm guitarist, the works. I never get tired of Rush songs.
@davidtimms96154 жыл бұрын
Alex Lifeson has always been one of my favorite guitarists. As a guitarist myself, he was a major influence on me in the early years, and continued to influence me for years afterwards. It was amazing to see him progress from a blues rock player into a prog-rock master. His is original - his unorthodox chord patterns, lyrical phrasing and expression, tone, and his philosophy in how he approaches the guitar. His songwriting prowess is fantastic. Rush is a combination of three unique talents, and Lerxst made an indelible mark on the rock landscape. Rush would not have been Rush without him.

At age 14 I picked up a guitar and could never put it down, over 40 years now. Never got famous, but still can’t put it down. I play small clubs, and it’s still fun.

I watched the film about him with the other teenagers. It was just before the release of the debut album and within 4 years he was writing Xanadu and in 6 years Moving Pictures. Absolutely incredible progression.

That is pretty amazing, if you think about it. Because those songs were complete master pieces.

Bytor is my favorite song. I'm a guitarist and love playing. I love the way it starts out with a bong and just keeps getting more energetic. The lead is excellent. The live version from All the World's a Stage is still my favorite. I always wanted them to play this at every concert over the years. I've seen them ever since their second album.

i fell for Rush in 1975 touring with Kiss, have seen them so many times since i cannot tell you, still have a lot of the ticket stubs.i am very thankful i had the chance to see these guys so many times., been on the stage several times also. Now with Neil passing i will never get the chance to see them together again,makes me sad, also for the people who never saw them what a loss for you...i have tons of pictures i took on the stage over the years also.....great times.
@BreauxBobby3 жыл бұрын
One of the first songs I ever learned on guitar was Working Man. The first album we ever wore out was All the World's a Stage. We would play 2112 at Halloween to set the mood for when the kids came over for candy. I got to see rush twice, once on the Exit Stage left tour, heavily promoting Moving Pictures. The crowd rushed the stage so much they had to turn the lights on to get them to settle down. It was probably the best show I've ever seen, the Stones Steel Wheels in second. I was watching a live Cure show with my kids, then right after, I put on an older Rush live performance, and the energy they played with just blew away the Cure and blew away every one of us. To say that Alex Lifeson was an influence on my generation, along with Geddy and Neil, is an understatement. They were like friends and in our lives every day. My little brother was a drummer and had every album they ever made. I still have Rush songs open on my music stand and love playing guitar with them, trying to get those wonderful tones and dial in the effects like Alex did. AMAZING. We were blessed to have these guys to listen to.

Congratulations, said the ticket guy for our prepaid tix , they escorted us 4 guys 21,22 yrs, tripping on mushrooms to front row center at the LA Forum . First night of the Moving pictures tour. I could see the sweat flying off of Alex face. He was and is a true master. Unbelievable

Rush was also a great influence on teenagers during the 1980s. I mean this band encouraged knuckle heads like me to read books in Junior High and High School.

I remember when I first discovered RUSH, then became a hardcore fan, I thought these guys must have been the most serious, unapproachable bunch. Then after a while I came to realize that they were as goofy as I was. I’ve learned so much about music from them. Thank you Alex, Neil, and Geddy.

What a lucky bunch of clueless teenagers, didn't know they were in the presence of rock royalty of the future. Damn I can hear Rush in his Star Spangled Banner Hendrix copy. Wow, thanks for the retrospective of one of my faves, the greats, the band of my teens and to this day top five all time in my book. Rush was the soundtrack to my youth anyway. Rock on Rush, so sad and blue the professor is gone, he gets by on you.

@andyharman30223 жыл бұрын
Really an amazing story. The son of immigrant refugees of WW2, born in Fernie, British Columbia, which must have been nothing more than a lumber camp at the time. Sounds like his father did whatever was necessary for his family to survive. Had to borrow money to buy Alex a guitar. Then he obsesses on the guitar, becomes a stoner, and gets nationwide exposure in the Canadian leading-edge reality documentary "Come On Children". It's eerie hearing him say "I don't want to be rich". It's hard to believe he was only 5 years away from writing 2112. Could it be said he failed at being a stoner? Those years of playing bars in Toronto must have provided the motivation to become a professional musician. To be good at anything, you have to strive and pay your dues.
@stewieiommi3 жыл бұрын
No, he didn't fail at being a stoner. I read an interview with him that was post-concert, only a few years ago, and as the interviewer was entering his hotel room, Alex was sitting under an open window, blowing hits out the window as to not be busted. He may be the only one of the three that continued smoking weed after a point. (I hope he's vaping it now... much healthier.)

I think what's crazy about this is, watch alex as a young man you can tell he's moody and undisciplined and depressed, then give him a guitar and an audience and he becomes a different person, he becomes laser focused and very happy, you can see him smile. It like watching Mr. Hyde turn into Dr. Jekle. you can tell this is what he was meant to be in life. Just amazing to watch him transform like that.

This guy had it rough in Rush at times with his best friend elbowing him out of his own sonic territory with synthesizers. He's a musical gangster though and toughed it out -- even excelling -- with grace under pressure. What an interesting character Alex Lifeson seems to be.
@gedofgont10063 жыл бұрын
I very much doubt Alex had any issues with synthesizers. The band were always democratic about most decisions affecting their musical direction, I believe.

That scene starting around the 7:30 mark, I'm now in the dad role having this same exact conversation with my kids. Just the same way my dad did with me. We all want to help our kids dodge the landmines of life. Sometimes we can and sometimes we can't. And sometimes our kids make it big and buy us a 7-bedroom house and a Ferrari. Here's hoping for the latter!
