Pre-teens are immune to it. Besides, young kids today are exposed to it, so it does not even surprise them. Also they are shy and afraid. I played chess in coaching environment from 7 to 11. I was careless and never bothered to think the way my coach was trying to teach me. Obvisouly I was not very good but I win some and loose some in competitions. I quit as a lost to a 6 year old ( when I was 11 ) in the tournament m. the kid was not a genius played well as a 6 year old. but I played poorly. I basically threw the last game away due to mistakes giving away my queen. My parents ( watched the whole thing ) beat the shit out of me on the spot and made me walk home from the tournament venue ( 15 minutes walk ) . From that point I started to hate playing and quit very quickly .

Anymore I don't care but I used to say that the least desirable person I can play is the kid. The reason is simple; I work in a warehouse, I get up at 4:50 AM, and my breakfast is typically a muffin with a cup of coffee. The kid is used to getting nine hours of sleep and eating cereal in the morning so he can do well in school. As a consequence, the kid is usually a little more awake than I am. So I sit at my board, waiting for my opponent and an eight year old kid shows up. I end up thinking "why me?".
