Flew the 35 for the first time on Steadicam a few weeks ago, and I gotta say they really knocked it out of the park. Just from an operators perspective, the ergonomics are excellent. Like you mentioned, the top handle is well designed and also the BUD1 plate is really nice too. Basically makes the SOS plate obsolete with the 35, kinda neat. Stoked to use it more in the future...

I've edited and done some VFX for some TV spots shot on the 35 and I was absolutely blown away. The dynamic range is like nothing i've ever worked with before. Good call on shooting Pro Res 4444, we shot ARRI RAW and the format wasn't supported by Adobe Premiere and Media Encoder yet, we used the beta software at the time and luckily had no stability issues. But yeah, I think if you have someone who knows how to expose their shots right then there isn't much of a need to shoot ARRI RAW. We shot our next spot afterwards in Pro Res instead of RAW and got amazing results still. Also definitely not applying any grain in camera hahahaha. Us editors and colorists way prefer to have the final say on that :p

talked to a arri head engineer at SMPTE and he said their main problem is that they dont have the budget to make their own ASIC processors. So they're always relying on third party processors bought off the shelf. And those always end up being much more power hungry and hot. He said if they could design their own job specific chips the sky would be the limit.

I worked on a film a while ago, that was shot on the Alexa 35. Mostly shot at night on an open field with nothing more than car headlights. There obviously was some noise, but I found it quite fascinating that even though the exposure was pretty high you could still see every little detail in the headlights. When they shot tests before we compared the internal noise reduction modes to doing it in post and the latter was clearly the better option. Noise reduction should be handled quite carefully, so it's better to do it with sofisticated software like Neat Video in post, rather than baking in the smearing artefacts right at the start. We did also notice that often times the footage actually holds more information in the highlights than you might see when you first apply the LUT. The LUT does actually clamp (or heavily compress) the specular highlights quite strong, and we would have to bring them down before hand quite a bit. I don't know if that is by design, but I personally would prefer a slightly softer roll-off to begin with and to see more or the glorious data that is there, than to have to bring it down on every shot.

It is a gimmick. I cant believe we have arrived at the point where we are actually baking artifacts from 35mm film into new technology that have moved on and dont possess the same flaws. Grain is a flaw. If it never existed and was introduced today, we would all agree it is totally distracting.

@@laurencewhite4809 there is no logic in it, but i think some people really just like the image to have a little texture? it really is somehow pleasing in a way. i agree with you though. if it never existed, probably no one would like it. same goes for the stuttering of 24 fps
@laurencewhite4809
@laurencewhite4809 Жыл бұрын
@@IJohnSmith Yes, why should images have small black/coloured dots that run like ants all over an image? People romanticise this aspect of film because they have this emotional attachment to it simply because it was an essential part of the first medium that could capture an image. That is it. It makes ZERO sense to continue to reproduce an artifact from an old technology. It has nothing to do with the capture of an image. Grain is not something our eyes see, or has anything to do with what we see in real life. It is simply an artefact from celluloid.
@laurencewhite4809
@laurencewhite4809 Жыл бұрын
@@danielhuang2488 I mean, people can think whatever they want is beautiful. But there is NO doubt in my mind that in the future, 10-20 years down the line, the further we get from the celluloid period, we are all going to look back at this early period of digital filmmaking period and shake our heads thinking about how people were unable to detach from the old medium and literally romanticised it to the point of actually baking its artifacts (like grain) into their films. And I dont agree with the comparison to 24 fps. 24 fps is still simply the most effective way of creating the illusion of movement. There is nothing effective or practical or rational about adding grain to your image.

Used the Alexa 35 about 5 or 6 times now this year and it's a wonderful upgrade. I'd look into the poor battery life of your batts. Was it extremely hot/cold when shooting with it? If you’re shooting ARRIRAW your high ISO settings should still be noisy *but highly amenable* to noise reduction in post. It’s raw camera data, you don’t want the camera baking in algorithmic noise reduction into a raw image. With those settings you want to judge them by how well they clean up later

If I recall, from the Arri tutorials the textures have to be processed before recording because it processing that's done before the raw decoding in the pipeline, or something to that effect. Well done on the investment! Since you were investing so much did you consider the Mini LF for more options lens wise, shooting full frame etc. Or ultimately for your work full frame isn't really needed.

Saw on IG that an old mutual of mine also picked up an alexa 35 earlier this year as an owner/operator. Cost aside, would you say that the 35 is more of a solo owner/operator friendly system than previous alexas? The form factor is smaller than an SXT or mini LF, but I guess I'm just curious if there's anything else that makes it favorable in a solo use case? Unless it's not at all solo-operator friendly and it's more of a "I can bring it to set for equipment rate boost" type situation lol. Regardless, looking forward to seeing where your career takes you next!
