Hey Lewis, like your vids very much!! I have a question. We are about to make a narrativ Low Budget movie. We don't have the money for an arri. What camera should you recommend us and what lens? FX9, FX6, C400? Vintage lens. What would you prefer when shooting on a budget. Thanks!!

I guess if you're starting out and only have 100 bucks, something this basic will get you off the ground. The image quality wasn't quite as bad as I thought it might be - and you could tell a story with it.

Where are some good places/marketplaces to start looking for the Bolex's? Are they mainly private owners or are there companies that work in selling restorations? I've found a guy for a K-3 but am struggling to find reliable distributors for the Bolex's.

I learned to shoot on 16mm. I hated it. Lol. So many issues.

Funny! You could 'probably' mask the low quality of the $100 camera by displaying it on an old standard-def tube TV.

That white balance hack was beautiful because if you look at his face you can see a profound blue/orange look - this could have been exaggerated in the color grade but it feels like it accidentally did something special but really pleasing

Nice video dude, I bought my Bolex with my first pay cheque after I graduated. That was 15 years ago and I have never run film through it. It's about time I fixed that!

Was this a TVC ? Gutsy move doing it all in camera . I can imagine the director sh*ting bricks in the edit suite waiting (and dreading) the client to say “why does it look like that “

Fantastic tips, I appreciate the practicality here. "Why don't you just do it in post?" Because the curse of the digital world is "good enough" taking the place of "excellent'. "Do it in post" tends to look like ass by comparison.

Why the 180 shutter and not double the FPS at 50?

180 degree shutter @ 25 fps is 1/50th .. if thats what you mean ?

Very well done to make it look like there was actually no lighting. I wonder what it looked like if there was no lighting.. or just a black floppy and a diff if the sun was poking in?

Great video! I'd say film can be easier than digital in the removal of various digital factors. Playback doesn't exist, so the director and DP can be much more confident in keeping the ball rolling during a shoot day and make it more time efficient. You also can remove the gunk and costs of DIT, video villages, or creating a LUT in advance. What I love shooting physical film is that all you decide on is the lens and the stock.

Excellent as always but still not sure why you would want to use that particular lens and sacrifice the sensor size. Looks great on my phone but seems a little odd. Not sure how this couldn’t be “changed” later. Thx as always.
@lewispottsАй бұрын
Yeah it does seem a little odd but you get a deeper depth of field with that sensor size, similar to 16mm, and It couldn’t really be changed in post because we baked in the grain and the effects from that lens

The hurt locker lens, hell yeah! Used this and the 11-165mm on a recent project, dope glass but only ever used them on 16, interesting idea to use them on digital for a similar but cheaper look!
