Your wonderful explanation at the beginning aside, you've made this very very very clear all along. The show has always been about progression. The wonderful thing about KZbin is you can go back and watch episodes if youre still at the low budget end. But complaining that a youtube channel doesn't keep making cheap DIY episodes because "you" don't want to progress doesn't mean that the channel has to stay stale. Besides.....who doesn't want to see cool gear??? :)

I love this type of episode, and kudos to the way you addressed it at the start. I work in post-prod so I never get to play with these production toys, but the Mini especially is starting to be used more and more in both TV shows and features, and so this is great for me to watch and learn where my footage is coming from. Appreciated!

Long time Film Riot viewer here. I remember watching your show back in the early 2010s where I was lucky enough to pick up two of these anamorphic lenses, which I've loved for years and agree with you completely. Back then, no one was buying them and they were all over youtube. Got two 35mm lenses for around $600. Blows my mind how I'm now watching a FIlm Riot video about them. It really has come full circle! Keep up the great work guys, you have always been who I've recommended people to who are looking to get started.

Just the Video for my Anamorphic Lens Playlist. One thing I really noticed about my DIY Anamorphic Lens was the _feeling_ it gave to the Camera, the way the Panning speeds differed due to the squeezing. My Lens Adapter has no issues with close and distant focusing and uses no Diopters.

I'm a shortfilm maker and shot both of my shorts on the Alexa with Lomo Anamorphic lenses (second one with Alexa mini). I love the look and have positive experiences with this combo. It's expensive but I was incredibly lucky to get sponsorships at a very low price. My DoP is also an Alexa teacher so it felt very comfortable with him and that camera. We shot Log C, ProRes4444XQ and first film was cropped to 2.39:1 and second film will be (still in post) 2:1. My only complaint would be that it's not a good choice if you want a very sharp look, the look is more soft, creamy and cinematic.

Scott Wetzler One 128gb card is about 46-47 minutes of 2K, around 17 minutes in 3.2k, and about 13 minutes in UHD. This is all based on ProRes 4444. XQ will slice those numbers pretty hard. Yes, you can undercrank. I think you can set any fps to a few decimals from 0.5-200.

How much cropping is involved if you shoot anamorphic vs spherical if the result you want is the 2:39:1 aspect ratio? I'd love to shoot anamorphic, because of the richness and cinematic look of the images, but I'm worried about degrading the image too much with the need to crop the edges of an ultra-wide image.

Hey Ryan, great video man. I have a question about this whole camera plus Lomo lens subject. For my feature film, I want to use these lenses badly. I will rent from Lensprotogo but I know these are PL lenses, so they only work with PL mounts. For the shoot, the Alexa Mini may be to expensive for the whole time, but the Blackmagic URSA mini 4.6k is much cheaper. So do you think if I went with that camera matched with theses lenses I'd be ok? Thanks! Chase

I'm really loving the image of the Alexa Mini, but there's just something about the anamorphic lenses and their focus that feels off to me. When I'm looking at an image with a shallow depth of field, it looks like the out-of-focus areas appear warped in a circle-like shape. I can definitely see it in the shots with the natural scenery. That could be just the Alexa's de-squeezing feature and I can see that effect being used for dream-like sequences. But overall, not too fond of it if I need shallow focus for scenes that aren't supposed to be dreamy-looking. Then again, it depends on the story I want to tell. That's probably it. Thanks, Film Riot!
