In 1837, James Alexander came to the Will County area from New York to work on the I&M Canal. After completing the canal, he purchased a farm in Romeoville in 1841. Unfortunately, his three-year-old daughter, Mary Alexander, died in 1845, hence the beginning of Alexander Cemetery. She wouldn't be the only Alexander child to die. Her sister, Caroline died in 1848 at three years old and another sister died in 1849 at 1 month old. I will also tell you the story about a 30-year-old man named John Stafford who, oddly enough, committed suicide by drinking acid. What a terrible way to die. So come join me as we explore Alexander Cemetery.
