I live in the UK and am a member of a county-wide family history society. We have just finished recording some 35K churchyard memorials in the north of the county. Many of the headstones are limestone, but even some of the most eroded can be transcribed using lighting techniques and a lot of chalk! The oldest headstone I’ve transcribed? It was dated 1620 and was an ancestor of mine by strange coincidence! All the transcriptions are published for family history researchers to use in tracking down their ancestors and the inscriptions are preserved for the future when the headstone inscriptions have completely eroded.

Polish wedding , traditional to south Poland , where the, so called ,mountains people reside. They have their own unique style and cultular characteristics . It´s like whole another folks within the nation . Lots of them emigrated to America in few different periods of times. Some , as far back as 18 hundreds . Love this channel . Watching from Germany . Polish/Czech wedding, my guess. Fascinating little cemetery, it's a shame the tombstones are just melting away. So much history, and lore. The odd little grave is a child's grave, the area open over the grave is for planting flowers. Loved the tour great narration. Still trying to catch up on the older videos. Thank you.

I live near that area and there’s a few haunted spots there like Maple Lake, German Church Road (of which you did a video on) and Archer Road where Ressurection Mary hitchhikes. There’s the burned down Willowbrook Ballroom where Mary had her last dance and across the street is a supposedly haunted tavern frequented by Al Capone.

Eric Perez ~ I was just down in that same area again, at another cemetery for another story, and passed by the old Willowbrook. They left the sign up on purpose it looks like, otherwise nothing left. Sad to see history disappear. It is a cool area right there -with those bars and stuff.

Visited this cemetery many times, been to mass in the church. Almost looks like graves are being exposed by erosion on the back of the hill. I have found that when the headstones are difficult to read, I carry a spray bottle of water and spritz the carving, and it shows up better, without any harm.

Interesting! Especially about the Irish immigration, My ancestors came to McHenry, Illinois from County Cork around 1866. How about going to Bloods Point Cemetery, and Belvidere Cemetery in Boone County?

wgen we were young we use to go out there at night and try and see the monks. they were suppose to sing in the church around midnight. never saw anything just got bit by mosquitoes. use to fish at maple lake and golf at cog hill close to there.

The grave markers that are shaped like logs, trees and tree stumps are usually the calling card of a fraternal group called "The Woodman of the World", or W.O.W. for short. The idea that they represent "a life cut short" is a common misconception that's usually not true.

I love the entrance to this cemetery! I also love that a monument was put up to explain the history of the McCollom family. That's very cool! See, monuments can be so telling and historical, I love them. I absolutely LOVE that church too! I love small intimate churches with wood floors. I have this habit, whenever I happen to be in a hospital, usually visiting someone, the first place I go to is the chapel. They are usually really peaceful and make me feel far away from the stresses of life. St Anthony's in Rockford is my favorite one so far. St Alexius in Hoffman Estates also has a pretty chapel. I'm gonna go check out the haunting of the Sullivan grave now. Thanks for another great video! EDIT: I watched the Sullivan haunting video. I sure wish they would have shown a bit of the video they took when the light projected from the statue. Very interesting! ....PS - I know how Daniel feels 😂but I have hopes that things will be better for me on the other side then they have been here 🙏👍

With the chapel or church ,would the ground be considered a graveyard in the beginning ? There is usually is some paranormal activity in cemeteries at night , because people perform occult rituals at certain times of the year and what they leave behind is not friendly . Your correct the cemetery has far too many stones that have fallen or vandalized . Erect headstones are supposed to have another stone attached and buried to anchor to the etone it won't fall over . Stones weather worn just seems be sad , the names gone and family either not aware or don't want to pay for the repair or can't . I am sorry , but having a wedding in a chapel located in a cemetery, no thank you , ( my opinion ) creepy . But to each their own . A lot of history associated with this cemetery and tragic events too . It seems like the graves are closer to one another and placed even on incline was used . My gosh Chicago has a lot of cemeteries. I lived between Baltimore and DC for years and I have seen some, but not like this. Now I live in Gettysburg so that’s a pretty big one

Beautiful cemetery with all the trees and woods and shade from the trees. The Sullivans' statue is so beautiful. I hope they encase it someday to prevent further deterioration. Update: I rewatched this one (first watched 8 months ago). The history is so interesting. Also to see how high the ridge is in the illustration is amazing. Given the haunting reinactment of the deadly carriage accident, and the late 1800s priest who saw the ground swelling, this might be a good place for IQ investigations. 👀 I see the name Hayes on the stone you stopped in front of. Half of my family are Hays and they say some of them changed to Hayes or changed from Hayes to Hays. I cannot remember which came first. I sort of wonder if these are of any distant kin to me.

Hi Ron, Who or what is the figure to the right of the chapel (@ 5.07) ?? It looks like an old fashion dressed soldier with a Calvary hat, he looks all gray with a white stripe on his uniform & you can see his socks & shoes. He's standing next to a brick pillar & there appears to be a flag blowing in the wind behind him. Has anyone else noticed or commented on this figure?? I'm pretty good at catching unusual things on videos... Let me know what you think !!

I saw the outfits that the Polish guest were wearing... they look very colorful & none look like the uniform that I saw on your video @ 5.07 ... this guy looks gray including his face which is hard to make out... I don't think he looks like one of the guest. If you look to the large tree on the right hand side, see the chapel's chimney & look straight down, you will see a figure standing next to a brick pillar & the chapel's window on the far right hand side. I think he looks like he's in a soldiers uniform ... did you see him when you were filming ?

The tree trunk tombstones are from Woodsmen of America. Google : Woodsmen whose tombstones were tree trunks. I found a real good story on it, but it wouldn't let me copy and paste the link. I believe I first heard about it from Lamont at Large.

They just found the car and body of a young man missing for 7 years. They are going to be going live in I think about 90 minutes, but they have a live chat going on right now. An update with Adventures with Purpose they have either helped or have actually found another 2 missing people. A lady that had been missing for months was found in the bush off one of the roads in the area. Cause they had come into the area, people had been doing research and searching areas and that was when the lady was found. They also found a young man that was in his car and missing for 7 years. He had been to a party and gone missing. Previous dives and sonar tracing had found to be negative. That day was the right day for sonar and they found the car. Even though sad, family members have been returned to their loved ones. They are now going on other missions to further find missing people

Also' Many times the tree headstones were from an insurance company called " Woodsman of the world". If a policyholder died, they got a free "tree" headstone. I am sure not all of them were that, but many were.

The quarries near the Church gave jobs to the local farmers and settlers when the Church was being built. That same limestone was used for many of the tombstones, and carried to Chicago where it was used in many public buildings.

The tetonic plates beneath the earth's surface may have a lot to do with the movement of the earth. Not enough to give seismic movement and the soil make up may give the illusion of movement. The wedding that was taking place at the cemetery chapel was a fantastic idea. The grounds there would have made for some beautiful wedding photos. Love the stories behind the Faces of the Forgotten. This is my childhood parish, attended CCD classes in the hall at the entrance. Was married in this church in 1992. It was NEVER known as Monks Castle, only in folklore. St James at Sag Bridge is an active parish in Lemont (not Justice) Illinois.

This is the legendary "Monk's Castle", of pre 1970s vintage, it's also known as Peabodys tomb, where Peabody had donated the land on which St. James was built..upon Peabody's death, a crypt was erected, and Peabody was mummified, and intered in a hermetically sealed above ground crypt..today it's been bricked in..Peabody was the main benefactor of not only St.James,but a major supporter of the I&M canal. The former pastor of St. James, a Rev. Gleason who authored several books about St. James and it's relation to Peabody, the Civil War, Red gate woods, and the Irish laborers whom are buried there at St. James cemetery. By the way, that wedding, was of Polish Highlanders, also known as gorale.

How ironic that you told of the white horses pulling the carriage so long ago so they could run away to be married, and these folks used white horses that very day pulling a carriage for their marriage.
