I actually worked with Tom Cruise on American Made as an FBI extra during Barry Seals incarceration bench scene where he discusses getting each of us Cadillacs. I never got a picture or autograph, I just saw him sitting there, memorizing his lines, and looking around. One thing that’s an indispensable aspect of the Tom Cruise phenomenon is simply this: even if he wasn’t a great actor or a movie star who did great action and stunts… he’d still be one of the best PRODUCERS in Hollywood history. He knows what makes movies work. He knows who needs to be on the team to make it happen. He knows how to run a production before the director is even on a project, let alone on set. If all he did was serve in the producer role, he would still be among the best.

What an interesting project. Depending on your tastes and sensibilities it's hard for me not to think that you're going to be watching some real bangers but you're also going to watch some real flops and the one thing you might see if you watch a whole bunch of Tom Cruise and a short period of time is the amount of intensity he brings to everything. He is one of my favorite actors on screen but not one of my favorites off screen. He's walked right up to the line of being somebody I don't have any interest in because of his off-screen antics that he's pulled himself back together and makes good movies still. I'm okay with intensity as long as is not a lot of collateral damage and it seems like he takes care of the people around him so who knows

Tom Cruise understands what movie stars in the past understood, or rather the studios understood and that is a movie star should never be too understandable, because "familiarity really does breed contempt". People might say they want relatable entertainers, but that only goes so far, because as the internet and social media has shown us, these are also the easier targets to tear down as soon as they reveal something about themselves that people don't like.
