11:07 the reason that a ton of the villains are big robots is because the VFX crew who did them at first was the same crew who did the transformers movies so that’s what they were good at and got hired for. For me the problem with the post end game movies is that they almost immediately wanted to build up the next big "thing" (the multiverse) which makes the films seem pointless on their own because they're not trying to be good movies on their own. Most of the early marvel movies (the good ones at least) were great by their own merits, not BECAUSE they where building towards infinity war, but now it feels like they expect us to like the movies just because they are part of something bigger no matter the quality of their own stories.
@Idkwgo1
@Idkwgo1 2 ай бұрын
Its so interesting how so many criticism I hear for these movies are contradictory lol. On one side there's people complaining that the movies don't feel like they're building up to anything, and on the other there's people saying that they only feel like build up.

@secondrateseth8360
@secondrateseth8360 Ай бұрын
@@Idkwgo1Yeah I agree that it’s not contradictory. The big hand is a pretty good example, it feels like it’s chucked in because they think ‘nobody will care about this unless we buildup to something bigger’ but there’s also no actual plan or thought put into it. They want the financial reward of a big crossover film without the actual effort of building up something interesting.

Post endgame movies have the aura of "the plot is too complex so it has a billion holes" Like seriously, it's silly how many stupid things happens in these movies. It feels like the writers went "I hope no one will ask a question about that".
@seanwolfe1181
@seanwolfe1181 2 ай бұрын
It’s just too much. Looking back on the infinity saga not too many of them were straight set ups for infinity war but just had little teases and we could clearly see an endgame (pun intended). But now it feels like every project is setting up some next threat. We’ve got mutants coming, kang, doom, whatever’s going on with scarlet witch, kingpin becoming mayor, young avengers, eternals, that Shang chi post credit scene. It’s impossible to keep up with it all.
@Sugarman96
@Sugarman96 2 ай бұрын
I think the post Endgame Spider-Man movies are the exception. With Far From Home, the point is to see the impact losing Tony Stark had on Peter, and with No Way Home it's about dealing with the cliffhanger of Far From Home. The movies don't set out to lay the foundation of the next climax in the MCU, they set out to tell stories about Spider-Man, that's why they work.

My excuse for the regress of Tony from 1 too 2 is that the iron man suit and “brand” has reinflated his ego back to what it was at the start of iron man 1. Iron man 1 was knocking down Tony stark. Iron man 2 is knocking down iron man.

@DorkN313, how is personhood stale. His ego is a massive detriment to the person Tony wants to be. His own hubris and technical brilliance puts him in the position where he is actively working against his own goals by believing he knows the best course of action. His greatest enemy had always been himself, and the moments he gets out of his head and, by extension, his own way does he thrive. But the ego doesn't go away because it's an inherent trait, therefore an ever-present struggle. Thor grappled with being worthy across the franchise, Steve with morality in an ever changing world, Natasha and Bruce struggling with identity and who they are, and Clint being the only stable one among them, being a family man who knows his worth. A man who can, at the end of the day, hang up his bow and go back to his normal life till he receives another call to action. For most people their problems would take a lifetime to work through, and in a multi film franchise, that's exactly what they did, because they could afford to do so.

That’s nothing against the actress, I understand that she didn’t know Chadwick Boseman, she didn’t have that connection to him that the rest of the cast did. I think she had an excellent performance for a standard MCU movie, but WF was meant to also be a memoriam, and she took us out of that space. Ultimately, the reason there were no female- or minority-led MCU films prior to Civil War is Ike Perlmutter (then CEO at Marvel and owner of ToyBiz) only got involved in Marvel Comics to sell toys, and according to their data, "female and black characters don't sell toys". He was also in control of the TV division completely, which is why it deviated so far from canon, as he was trying to leverage it to force the MCU to do what he wanted (showcase the Inhumans, for one, in order to undermine the X-Men; longer story). I think marvel studios doesnt have as good villains or arcs. I think the Russos work was great. I definitely have a lot of love for some of their films. @@TheTurbanator123 the Disney plus series suck but I would put quite a few films over AOS. @@TheTurbanator123 this might just be me being a comics geek, because in the comics the X-Men based are a true ensemble where everyone spends most of their time as a supporting character and 10% of it as a main character when it's their turn to be the pov character of a particular storyline. The movies completely botched this and took a shit on everyone who wasn't Wolverine, Charles or Magneto (and later Raven, Charles and Magneto for the Apocalypse). @mr.iiconic yeah I mean you bringing up first class isn't a bad thing to me. It's definitely better than a lot of marvel studios films. I do think days of future past is an ensemble. Pretty crazy concept, I know. I mean the cast speaks for itself. Plenty of characters havea great moment. My brain Doesn't immediately go to wolverine with that film. I think of Charles Arc and the concepts and themes of hope. I think of Evan Peter's. I think of both magnetos. I think of the rogue cut even. I love days of future past and you pointing out that Logan gets a focus again doesn't change I like that film more than most avengers films other than civil war and infinity war. Which I would say are on par. I also love X2 and I don't think there's a film quite like it since. I do think agents of shield did multiple ideas far better. It did secret invasion better. It did evil robots better. It's capable of having comedic episodes. And it's capable of serious dramatic episodes that are dark. I think villains like John garret and Aida and Ward/Hive and The Doctor seriously run laps around marvel studios. Agents of shield even did house of M really well. And it set clear rules for the darkhold that are much better defined than what marvel studios presented. People didn't understand how the darkhold works in wandavision and multiverse of madness. They also explained time travel and multiverse ahead of the films. They did Jeffery mace before marvel studios did us agent. The other thing it does better is female characters. Agent may daisy johnson jemma Simmons mockingbird. Same with other marvel tv. Jessica jones Colleen wing Karen Paige misty knight Claire temple Overall I would say Marv studios needs to step its game up in terms of writing. I wouldn't say this other stuff is perfect btw. Defenders is flawed. The other netflix shows are quite cheap other than daredevil. Agents of shield has some slumps. But gun to my head I would take the writing of marvel tv and the works of mattew Vaughn over some of the superficial mediocre writing of marvel studios And the fact the Russos and marvel studios right now believes Robert downy Jr Dr doom is what we want and not just a reallt well thought out story is so cringe and desperate. And I mean come on almost every villain in marvel tv is far superior. Kingpin killgrave GrantWard Aida bullseye Hive Also if we are bringing up comics I think TV does comics better. i understand that but the main thing that bugs me about it is that it's always a bunch of non-descript characters that we've just met and we're supposed to be instantly invested in them, getting whooped by a vaguely magical mcguffin that we only know what it is from an exposition dump an hour later, like in comparison to say when thanos whoops everyone in infinity war you instantly know the stakes because we've had years of build up seeing the heroes win, opposed to these random shield donnies additionally after watching loki lose only a few hours before in the first thor film, he's already coming into the film with lower expectations because, we've already seen him lose

@@henryisdumb I think the problem with random unexplained power levels is that you can't win no matter what you do, because if the heroes are knocked about only to come together and win in the end, it becomes pretty tiresome and predictable pretty quickly. It's less "oh this is a serious threat" if you do it more than once, and more "Oh this is part of the tempo where they lose early so they can win later". The issue is really just that the writing usually fails to set up anything beyond 'beat the bad guy' within the film's dramatic structure. If Loki was doing trickster God things in a slightly more clever way, he could have been the first Thanos and manipulated the villains and heroes of the films over a protracted period of time, faking his own defeat in his actual appearances merely as part of furthering his own ends. But I don't think in general they tended to set up villains with long term goals. Thanos didn't have a long term goal, he had a one-and-done goal that merely happened to be saved up to serve as a culmination for the set-up of the larger universe. If he had survived he would have served no purpose in the future. Now, of course, you can always invent one, you can invent new progression, new evolution, new plans, new motivations. But he had nowhere logical to go after endgame. I don't think you need extreme long term planning, which can be a negative in films given how long they take to make and all the complications that can arise from that. I just think if you have a strong coherent concept of what the motivations and goals of characters are it allows you to do those things if you want.

Personally I didn’t like externals very much, but I have no issue with the things you mentioned. I’m fine with the celestial being dead in the ocean, it’s a little weird, but whatever. Me just being pedantic, it’s definitely way too small, compared to the size shown in the scene where it destroys a planet as it “hatches”. My main problem comes from the existence of deviants and the celestial as a big bad. It kinda feels like the movie should have been extended and dealt with those two ideas and threats separately. Also I’m just tired of new characters dealing with world ending threats by themselves. I love Shang-Chi, but I’m annoyed by its final boss for the same reason. Also the nature of the eternals as a team doesn’t feel like it was fleshed out enough, with the whole thing going on where they can forget themselves and become mindless killing machines. It needed more time. Lastly Circi’s powers were treated weirdly throughout the film. It is shown pretty well at first that she can change the material something is made of, but not the shape. The bus is a fun example when she turns it into petals, then it collapses. But the crux of the film has her turn the deviant into a tree. In that case she changes shape, but not material. Then proceeds to never have her do that again. Maybe it was meant to showcase that she can use her powers on living things, but if so they did it wrong. I don’t even know where a celestial would even stand in regard to that. The death of the celestial also just felt weird to me. I don’t read the comics, just read too much into movies. In the end people are allowed to enjoy stuff even if others didn’t. Thanks for reading and have a nice day

@@jaybee27D I'd even say it is basically a bad change if there isn't a good narrative reason, because of course it does serve a function, and comics did sometimes do this, of being inclusive, a dirty word to some, but the point was generally to say: Hey, you're a disabled kid? Well there's someone like you who becomes a superhero (that was a Thor thing at one point). A lot of adopted kids do have hard times depending on when they were adopted and how stable it was, so I can see the merit in that. But I agree, all that matters from a quality of story perspective is whether it served a function. How does it affect his relationship with his father, or how does it affect his own psychology and behaviour? And with Stark, where in theory his family legacy has a lot of good and bad mixed up in it, it should generally matter to what extent he feels responsible, or to what extent he feels expectations on him. In the end it's just a choice of his parentage, how it affected his life, and how that would play out in your interpretation. All that matters is that you justify your choices by doing something with them.

1:00:00 You nailed it, expectation were risen to a absurd level, not every Marvel movie has go be infinity war or endgame, some will be have lower stakes or less repercutions and lower "quality" but that is expected. I'm amazed that people think that Marvel didn't do a stinger until phase 4. But also believe that the shows impacted how audiences respond to marvel content and made the "marvel has fall off since endgame" more louder Edit: 1:01:24 I think you point out something very important, the difference in expectation pre-release and then revisiting the movie, now knowing what to expect from it.

Similarly, Thor 4 was really good to me. Almost every movie ends by defeating the bad guy by just hitting him hard enough. Especially Thor starts off as really blood thirsty, always looking for another fight. But in Thor 4, he ends the movie by appealing to the villain's good nature. "I choose love. You can too, you can bring her back... Make your wish." and he leaves Gorr to spend his last moments with Jane. Gorr realizes that he's right, and that the whole time all he wanted was justice for his daughter. He was so stuck looking for revenge that he didn't realize he now had the power to undo the damage that was done to her and bring her a more wholesome justice.

I'm not going to pretend I have a cogent explanation because it's someone else's opinion, but I think the issue is more of how generic a lot of the threats are, as threats. The lack of a more sophisticated narrative structure in a lot of cases beyond there needing to be a threat, and, in his view, a lack of imagination in the form that threat takes. The thing with CGI stuff, as it were, and CGI is incredibly sophisticated of course and can be phenomenal anyway, but, it is in those cases, something conjured out of the ether. You almost invariably get more out of a well developed character being acted out in a small moment, than a grand CGI display that by its nature, is depersonalised. That isn't an attack on CGI itself, but rather the categories of instances in which it is sometimes used, and the motivations behind those uses.

CGI looks absolutely terrible when rushed, and the MCU movies are Frequently rushed. But beyond the quality, Big CGI explosions are not new and exciting anymore. We've seen them, just like we've seen faceless CGI alien creatures. As a point of comparison, look how relatively little CGI is used in the dark knight. The Focus is ALWAYS on the characters, how they develop and what their motivations are. The best part of the movie is a conversation in a white room between a clown a guy dressed as a bat.

That you can see Natasha Romanoff's stuff in Avengers 1 and relegate it to "Weird" stuff is where I turned off. Like, it's literally missing the ENTIRE character development. You learn more about Black Widow's perspective in the film from the stuff than anything else. She's a femme fatale who has been taught to use her femininity as a weapon against masculine villains. She has been taught that her feminine side is just that: a weapon, which underpins later development of her pain being forced sterility etc. It also underpins her understanding of what she is. Her very nature is as a killing agent, not even her womanhood is left alone. And so, it makes Loki's statement of "can you wipe out that much red" so much more powerful. Etc.

IMO The absolute worst moment in all the MCU was when Thanks killed Gamora for the Soul stone. They established that Thanos genuinely didn't care about Gamora, Nebula or any of his "children." He tortured and abused them and sacrificed them like pawns. And so when sacrificing her to get the souls WORKS somehow... The movie basically confirms that his abusive behavior was somehow... Love? Like not even in a "he believed that he loved her." Way, but in a "the magic of the universe says that his abusive love is fine." Wouldn't it have been so much better if he killed Gamora and nothing happened? It would show that the soul stone has the ultimate protection. You have to kill something you love to get it, but if you are willing to kill what you love for selfish gain, then you never really loved it in the beginning. It would also set up the Hawkeye/Black Widow sacrifice more. You can only get the soul stone by sacrificing yourself, because if you really love someone you would rather put yourself in harms way and that would actually be love.

It wasn't "the universe", it was specifically the Soul Stone, and the Infinity Stones are shown to be both sapient and malevolent. The Mind Stone is the most obvious example: in the first Avengers movie it influences the Avengers into arguing, and in the second Avengers movie it creates Ultron. But all of the Infinity Stones (except the Time Stone, which is implicitly reined in by sorcerer magic) have at least one scene that shows they're bad news. I don't think it's that far of a stretch for the Soul Stone to judge Thanos's sacrifice of Gamora as "good enough" based solely on how sad he was about it. Also for what it's worth, it's stated at one point (I forget when but I think it was in Guardians of the Galaxy) that the Infinity Stones _want_ to be reunited. Thanos was obviously the best candidate for the job, so that could've been a factor in the Soul Stone's decision to accept his sacrifice of Gamora as well.
@Pehz63
@Pehz63 Ай бұрын
Thanos really did care about Gamora. She said "I always hated that throne" and the very next thing he does is sit on the stairs in front of the throne instead. But he also replies "Even so, I'd hoped you'd sit in it one day." He always loved her, but yes he was abusive and pushed them too hard. He was so obsessed with his life's work that he put that before being a good father. I picture a workaholic sports dad who is mostly there for his son to train him. He wants the best for his son, so he trains him hard. But his obsession with sports gets in the way of him seeing that his son just wants to be accepted unconditionally, not only under the condition of his success. A lot of being a good father is preparing your child to succeed in the world, but you're right to point out that another big part of being a father is making your child feel loved unconditionally. Anyways, so both Gamora and Nebula ran away from Thanos and swore to kill him. While they were away from him, he had to reflect on why they left him and how he was as a father. Clearly he matured a lot in this time, because he has multiple moments where he expresses regret. His last words were to Nebula: "Thank you, daughter. Perhaps I treated you too harshly." This is admittedly a little bit personal for me. I have a father that didn't always treat me well. He always did what he thought was best for my future, even if sometimes his methods seemed cruel. I always knew he loved me, and I still know that now. But especially since I've moved out and gone to college and live away from him, he seems to have a more somber regretful tone where he wishes I were closer to him but knows it's his fault that I am not. But I also appreciate that a lot of what he did made me as strong, courageous, and upright morally as I am now. Nebula and Gamora are very strong and independent characters with the only flaw being their childhood trauma because Thanos was (regretfully) an abusive father. But his abusiveness never came from a lack of love or even a lack of empathy. It came from his faulty assumption that they were strong enough to handle being pushed so much by him to become that strong.
@Pehz63
@Pehz63 Ай бұрын
And, again, the root cause of Thanos pushing them so much is that he cared more about his life's work than he cared about the daughters he loves. That's also why he is willing to sacrifice Gamora for the soul stone, as explained by him. He thinks his destiny is more important than his loved ones, and is willing to make sacrifices to achieve the ultimate goal. That's ultimately why he wins and the Avengers lose. Captain America isn't willing to make sacrifices, he (arrogantly) thinks he can just work hard enough to win without any losses. If they simply killed Vision, Thanos probably wouldn't be able to find the body to use to the time stone on it. The only reason the Avengers win in Endgame is because Dr. Strange sacrificed the time stone, sacrificed the 5 years, and sacrificed his chances with his lover. All of that was to set up Tony Stark to sacrifice his perfect and peaceful life to save the universe. If you don't understand that Thanos truly does love Gamora (but is simply willing to make huge sacrifices for his goals) then you don't understand the ENTIRE message of Infinity War and Endgame. It's all about sacrificing that which you love for something greater.

To answer your question "Was the MCU ever good?" Yes. Phase 1 and Phase 2 was the MCU at it's best. If you think not let's do a little review. Ahem! Phase 1: Was the perfect way to start a franchise. Had it's many issues that hindered half of it's movies from being better than just Origins. Overall the greatest way to start off. Phase 2: It is now not so good. But the Phase isn't that bad. Got Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. The only movies that weren't really good was Thor 2 and Iron Man 3. But in their own right they aren't truly bad. Just the MCU humor hindering their respective stories to reach great heights. Then the Dark times came... Phase 3: Now this. The Phase starts off perfect. Civil War? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Oh my god they Phase started off perfect! So why the hell do it classify it as worse than the 2nd Phase? That's because bad movies no matter the goddamn quality were raking $1 Billion dollars. And the worst movie in the Phase and the ENTIRE MCU raked over $2 Billion Dollars. Dark World isn't looking too bad now. The movie i say in question is Endgame. And it's not just because it raked in over $2 Billion dollars. But the next two Phases copy the goddamn movie. Appealing to the fans with Nostalgia. No Way Home, Deadpool & Wolverine. It won't be long before Marvel realize we go in for the nostalgia movies. No wait they already realized because Deadpool 3 exists...Fuck me. Phase 4: The bad only started getting noticed NOW. Beforehand, it could be ignored because the hylw was HUGE. But at this point the hype had died down and boom. The movies only got worse. And shows. No Way Home was the worst because it expects us to gobble it up like we're babies. Phase 5: Started off shit. Has only had ONE good film and that in itself has issues. Borderline not good. But because the other films in the Phase are ten times worse or I just haven't seen them. Yea. Fuck me for getting invested in this universe

Without his own weapon literally blowing up in his face, he was on track his supervillain origin story. He mends his ways, but it's not an over night thing. He haunted by his past and feels like he's living in his father's shadow. The MCU tones it down, but he's literally meant to be Andrew Tate.

This made me realize that Captain America had the best trilogy after Guardians of the Galaxy and both series have two things in common: they're able to take a step back from marvel blockbuster formula and try out genres where they can carve out a space for themselves(gotg is mainly an absurd comedy while captain america is very political) and both films base their conflicts between people and groups instead of cgi monsters. Also talking about civil war reactivated my twitter arguments gene back: steve was absolutely in the right in civil war, the government was really shady with how they tried to control the avengers and by prisoning everyone who defy them proved steve's point on government control. Both tony and steve have understandable arguments based on their lived experiences(tony knows what happens when someone (himself) is not given restrictions, steve lived as a puppet of the government and also he knows government, just like shield, can get corrupted). People only remember the film as "tony was in the right" because steve hurt him personally and tony was on the role of "betrayed" at the end.

I also feel like while Tony is justified in feeling betrayed by Steve, it doesn't make Steve protecting Bucky wrong - he was so severely brainwashed he didn't recognize his best friend and tried to kill him, do we actually think that he had any ability to decide to kill or spare Tony's parents? And then the Accords which mandate that anonymous superheroes give up their secret identities and wear tracking bracelets all the time... Not to mention the MCU canonically shows that the consequences of the Accords are Bad™️ and they get repelled after a couple of years. I honestly feel like Tony just supports them because of his own guilt and wanting to be able to hand off responsibility for his past choices.

43:03 I would not put Infinity War in S-tier (sorry). One of my biggest pet peeves in storytelling is when the heroes have a clear opportunity to kill or disarm the villain and they just... don't. That moment where Star Lord gets mad and screws up the plan makes me SO ANGRY. I also remember thinking the whole "there's only one reality where we win" thing is a stupid excuse to not show why certain methods of defeating Thanos wouldn't work. Like, why can't they use Strange's portal thingies to cut Thanos' hands off? Why do they keep trying to pull the glove off of him instead of CUTTING HIS HAND OFF? The answer is just "uhhhhh we don't win in that reality" but WHY NOT? What could Thanos possibly do to counter that? I would genuinely love to know!

Fr, everyone is holding the idiot ball so hard in infinity war (and parts of endgame) that I can't really take it seriously. Like, why the hell was everyone okay with sacrificing the lives of hundreds of wakandans on the off chance that they could help vision? (not to mention the fact that vision is played by a white guy and the wakandan soldiers are black, which makes it not a great look.) Why did Loki, a guy who's been shown to be really clever and have impressive magical ability just decide to go at thanos with nothing but a dagger? And hard agree with the reality thing; that was ridiculous. And for endgame, when bruce has the infinity gauntlet that makes them basically omnipotent, he uses it to bring back everyone who died, rather than making it so the snap never happened, which would have avoided all of the chaos and problems that having earth's population suddenly double would have. (also imo they should have had steve sacrifice himself and tony retire to be with his family, not the other way around, which does a pretty big disservice to steve's character arc about moving on from the past and finding family in the present). But the scene where steve used thor's hammer was so baller that I audibly gasped in the theatre so it wasn't all bad.

How does Paul Bettanys race have anything to do with the movie? Also Tony says to Bruce that he can’t revert the snap 5 years ago because he has his family in the present day and doesn’t want to lose that, that was his one condition for going through with the time heist

How about how him killing his daughter was the correct way to get the soul stone. Is this supposed to prove he loved her? If anything, killing her should be what stops Thanos from getting the soul stone.

Why did you apologize immediately after voicing your opinion? It weakens any argument that you would then make

My biggest issue with the mcu now is that it can't quite decide if iy wants to do multiverse stories or the skrull stories. I personally feel like post Endgame,the stakes should have been lowered for phase 4, and fhe skrulls presented a good opportunity for that. Compared to the multiverse, they are relatively low stakes. We could have Avengers 5 or The New Avengers or whatever to beat the skrulls and then introduce the multiverse

I don't know what it is, but I genuinely cannot bring myself to hate iron man 2. You can tell me everything bad about it as much as you want but it never manages to change anything.

I thinks ethernals is getting so much flame for no reason. That movie is incredibly ambitious, introducing a bunch of new characters, and has a darker tone to it, and I think it does it super well, for me its an A+ tbh. I just feel like some people who like it are afraid to say it out loud, and they shouldnt

The problem with the movie is that the cast of characters ends up being overwhelming. Avengers worked as an ensemble style film because the cast was built up before hand in the individual movies.

@@disrupt94 I agree 100%, but I also think that they dealt with this issue really really well, ofc it wasnt as good as avengers cuz the circumstances were different, but even so I ended up having a good connection to many of the characters
