I'm 41. Dont keep up with new music these days. I still think of COB and ARSIS as new bands I like, lol. Condolences to his friends and family, I did not know the man but he was an artist with an excellent ear who incorporated the best of thrash and classic metal to create his own signature "sound", which is the goal for many of us who pick up a 6 string to play and express ourselves. He was a top gun . Blazed his path, made his mark, I hold him in high esteem . Recorded music is a legacy and testimony of an indeviduals existence, Alexi succeeded in leaving a huge load of kick ass heavy metal guitar mastery.

His left hand might not be out of the ordinary but I always felt like his right hand is peak guitar playing. Can't play it any better on that hand.
@TonyTombstone10 жыл бұрын
the leads and riffs he writes are brilliant, theres a lot of subtle things that i really like. yeah hes not as technical as he used to be but its inspiring to see him play like a human! some very technical players get very boring and play like robots!
@kungfuman8210 жыл бұрын
I'm inclined to agree. While his overall style has changed and he's not as technical as he used to be, the guy still jams.
@ParallaxDG10 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but if you played guitar you would know that starting with AYDY his guitar parts got a hell of a lot more technical. If you meant less melodic then yeah I can agree.
@kungfuman8210 жыл бұрын
ParallaxDG I've played guitar for over 10 years and I disagree. Material before AYDY was much more "shreddy" and had very technical passages throughout the entire albums. They still had underlying melodies and a sense of correct placement (as opposed to just random notes thrown around like, say, Buckethead), but these days he seems more focused on whammy bar stuff than he does technical solos. Starting with AYDY, it seems he changed his riffs over to more chugging grooves (as if he got away from the original power metal influence he once had, as even the overall speed of the songs have slowed). I dare say his riffs are more "catchy" now (not meaning that in the typical metalhead insulting way) and, while he still has awesome solos, they're nowhere near as technical as they used to be. Not that I care, I still love COB.
@kungfuman8210 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I can agree with you on that one. Children of Decadence and the main riff to Sixpounder jump to mind first.
@kungfuman8210 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, we have to qualify catchy as "positive" because, as we all know, if you're a metal musician and you write something that a lot of people like, you're a "sell-out!" :-P Speaking of catchy, I've always liked how they do metal covers of the most oddball songs. Country, pop, punk… it doesn't matter, they make it heavy as shit.

I found COB back in 2000 when follow the reaper came out. I was a 14 year old metal head that just started playing guitar a year earlier. Coming up on metallica, slayer, pantera and megadeth I had never heard anything like Bodom. I can still remember the first time playing that record just staring at the cover of follow the reaper thinking it was the coolest album cover ever and being completely mesmerized and in awe of what I was listening to. That single experience had more impact on me than anything before or since. I literally did not know that it was possible to do the stuff Alexi was doing with a guitar. Alexi became my favorite guitar player that day and has been ever since. I've obviously discovered many other amazing players and influences since then but Alexi will always be THE guy that made me take guitar seriously and really give 110% every time I play. I'm 34 now and hearing he passed broke my heart. I spent well over half my life looking up to him and trying to nail every track on every Bodom record. I never knew him personally but In a wierd way it feels like I lost an old friend. It has been cool seeing so many comments on youtube and social media with tons of guys with very similar stories as mine. Its awesome seeing he had such a huge influince on so many people like myself. He was a 1 of a kind musician and will be missed. I hope wherever he is, he can rest easy and knows what a massive impact he had on so many
