They make it seem like if something good happens to another person that may not happen to their friends then that person who had all the good stuff happen to them will be an ass, so it seems to be saying that you shouldn’t want to strive for a better position in life or else you will become an ass. Was the musical Troy and Gabriella had the call back for in the first movie the winter musical? Because if so, it’s probably just referring to that. Gabriella and Sharpey weren’t friends, so when Gabriella went around and said bye to everyone before summer break, she probably just brought up the one moment they shared together during the school year. But mostly, it’s just plot convenience to remind the viewers about what happened in the last movie. If the callback in the first movie wasn’t for a winter musical then I don’t know. I highly respect Zac Efron for that performance because it wasn't until HSM 2 he was actually singing. Drew Seeley recorded his songs in the first movie bc Zac couldn't hit the notes since his voice wasn't strong enough and was never trained. If you really think about it. Troy's friends were whiney as hell. Why would they try to make him feel guilty for getting a great opportunity like that. You should want your friends to achieve their dreams. And you should be able to see when they aren't trying to hurt you by bettering themselves. In this case troy had good intentions. Sharpay really needed to learn that she isn't entitled to anything. Especially not anyone's love. That lesson was communicated well, but Troy really shouldn't have had to apologize or seek redemption from his friends.

I always disliked this movie because it turned Sharpay who was a skilled, determined, proud woman into a boy-chasing homewrecker who tried to bribe a dude into dating her and was so insecure about her own talent (what????) that she tried to sabotage a show so she wouldn't have any real competition.
