Funny you should do this video, I've just had a call back from a customer after 16 months, due to a few large cracks in my work, however this is after a rather large extension built which probably knocked the room about a bit. I did exactly what you did, just yesterday, meshed the whole 2 walls rather than take them back to brick, hoping I don't get a call back!!. Got a text today saying they looked spot on....and that payment had just been made😉 so enjoyed that video thanks

Great to hear the comment. After using this technique for about 6-7 years I’m year to have a call back. It’s a great method for getting over surface cracks. I’m sure you will be fine. We often mesh on new extension walls joining new to old.

Ahh nice one…..I also use this and swear by it on problem walls like you explained clearly. Used to do a lot of EWI and seemed logical to use the method inside. Have always bedded in bonding coat and left to dry though. Then pva and one coat skim with sponge. Never occurred to me to bed in the first coat on two coat work. Thanks!

Good video , i use a notching trowel over first coat to give consistant depth to allow mesh to apply even

Great tip. Do you get shadow lines from the notched trowel come through on second?

This is exactly what I did on my house, lime walls, lots of cracks mainly hairline, some movement were plaster has detached from lath but not much of that (kinda fixed that stuff first too)

Did it actually work because I am going out of mind repairing cracks! Every year I’m cutting into them, refilling, sanding and then more appear. It’s not even come away from the lath because I’ve ripped out the stuff that has!

Used Scrim tape over cracks on reskim and after 12mths the cracks came back . It’s a 1950s house and has always suffered from a very fine crack over the fireplace no matter what it’s filled with it comes back. Would the method you are demonstrating stop this cracking or is it more likely a structure fault in the building. 👍 keep posting your doing great.

He's reinforced the entire wall rather than individual cracks. The only way I can see this method fail is when the entire wall decided to fall off.

Hi Alex, this video has given me more help! just in time For a job I’ve got shortly , one question, the living room that needs doing has a chimney breast, so I’m going to need to add beading on the corners… how would you apply these aswell as the mesh? Just attach the beads and run the mesh right next to it? Also, what about internal corners? How would you mesh these if you’re not doing wet corners . Cheers !!
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 2 жыл бұрын
I would bead it first then put the mesh on, set about an inch back from the bead.

can the mesh be used on ceilings on a lath and plaster ceiling?

Yes. It’s a lot easier to do with 2 people though.

So your clients payed for blue grit, putting mesh on an the the re-skim yet they’ve still got a substrate that is old and could have bond failure in the future. Mesh won’t stop substrate issues, if that was my house I’d rather have it taken off and boarded, each to their own and good luck if you can get people paying for all that work but there’s load of clients that won’t pay and want a basic reskim cost.

Not always. But a lot of the time. If you haven’t seen it already, the “short” we made on Blue Grit explains how we use BG.

Hi. Do you think mesh could be used in a similar way on an old ceiling? I plastered a ceiling that had many cracks and possibly should have been hacked off / over boarded? Thanks
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
I have done that before. Usually if going over artex and a section has failed. It’s a bit harder on ceilings as you need 2 people to put it up. Generally though, if it looks really dodgy over boarding is the better shout IMO. Having a failur halfway through a set sucks.

Did you use hardwall in the second coat?
@AlexMorleyPlastering
@AlexMorleyPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
No. Never hardwall in the top coat. That’s the finishing coat. Only in the first coat. This concept is explained in the video how to get over rough walls.

Seriously? Well I need this then because my life is just cutting cracks, filling them, sanding, paint, reappear, repeat and it’s making me want to move house. I hate lath walls but I’ve only had the money to remove the bathroom lath and my bedroom on one side!
