Alex on Autos is the best reviewer on KZbin for daily drivers in relation to detail. I like him more than the Consumer Reports "team" as they are usually snarky, making jokes that aren't all that funny. Alex has a lot of competition, but I like his reviews as much as I like Motorweek's as well. No gimmicks, just reviews.

I personally feel the Nissan/Infiniti two-clutch hybrid drivetrain is better suited to high power sporty applications than an economic fuel-saving hybrid. I drove a 2015 Q50S Hybrid AWD awhile back and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance yet still achieve 30mpg average and it didn't have the rubber-band CVT effect you find in the Lexus GS450h, but you get better mileage out of the Lexus over the Infiniti. Still with only just 40hp electric motor (the Toyota HSD MG2 drive unit has significantly more power) questions its ability to keep the car going in EV mode, especially in hot weather where the electric AC will definitely draw some power as well.

Solid looking hybrid, but consumers will have to decide if the few bucks they save on gas are worth the loss of the 3rd row, the slightly diminished cargo room, and the loss of radar-adaptive cruise control. I suspect most buyers will stick with the gas version of the Rogue myself. Great review though!

Hi, Alex. At +23:08 you say, "the Nissan Rogue has about 2" more ground clearance than we find in the RAV4." I think it would have been more accurate to describe it as "about an inch." I think the exact difference is either 0.8" or 1.2", depending on the Rogue trim. According to the specs on the Honda website, RAV4 Hybrids have 7" of ground clearance (0.9" more than non-hybrid RAV4s). I couldn't find official ground clearance numbers on Nissan's website, but Car and Driver says the Rogue has either 7.8" or 8.2", depending on the trim. Hi Alex, would you say I should go with a 2019 Rogue Hybrid SL loaded with 16k miles for $23k or the 2019 RAV4 Hybrid xse for about $34k, 25k miles. Obviously the RAV4 redesign is far superior in every way, but money is an object. Do you feel the RAV4 is worth the extra cost? No payment on the Rogue as my 2015 q50 hybrid sport with cover most of the cost with trade and I’ll pay it off cash, otherwise about 14k loan on the RAV4. Great reviews, thanks for the videos, it’s helping me very much.

Even 5-10 more mpg compared to the gas only version and taking 4 years to make the increased cost worth it doesn't seem good enough to me. Seems like a very niche product.

Jordan Allison no argument necessarily there, but since the average person keeps their car for 10 years you'll get 6 years of savings. The number increases of course if gasoline goes back to $5 a gallon. Over 10 years this is an expected $1500 which is better than a sharp stick in the eye.

So far the evidence suggests that they will. The Prius has a long track record and the Escape hybrid's history is fairly similar. The hybrid system is covered by an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty except in states that require a longer warranty which generally extend this to 10 years/150,000 miles.

As always great review Alex.2017 Nissan X-TRAIL (ROUGE) 1.6dci engine gets 48mpg combined fuel economy. why car companies does not bring their super efficient diesel engines to North America? I really don't understand.

Well two major things have to be accounted for: First, if you're talking about 48 MPG on the Euro cycle, that translates to 36 MPG on the US cycle because the UK gallon is 25% larger than a US gallon. Second, the 1.6L diesel wouldn't meet the much stricter US emissions regulations which is the biggest reason we don't see as many diesels in the USA at the moment. The result is that the diesel would likely cost more than the hybrid to become compliant in the USA and by the time the emissions were brought into compliance it would probably ding the fuel economy and performance.

It is not CO2 emissions that are the problem, it is smog-causing NO2 emissions. These are greater in diesel engines. They cause lung disease. Cities like London, Paris, Munich and Rome have serious air pollution problems due to the millions of diesel cars driving around. The air in US cities is better -- there are fairly few diesels. Also, the Euro NEDC test cycle is much easier and less realistic than the US test cycle. For real world fuel consumption, go to spritmonitor. The X-trail diesel averages 7.18 l/100 km, the gas version averages 8.23. Never, never base your fuel consumption estimates on the NEDC test.

How do you think this is going to compare to the upcoming Equinox/Terrain diesel? I know they're not hybrids, but they're suppose to get 40 mpg highway in their front wheel drive versions I'm willing to guess. I'm guessing the city mpg will be a little worse than the Rouge and Rav-4 hybrids, but combined fuel economy may be the same.

Hope someone can help me with this. I am comparing the HYBRID versions of the Rouge and Rav4. The Rav4 is limited in range because it starts in front wheel drive, and only the electric motor engages the rear wheels. That electric motor on the Rav4 only has a range of 55 miles. If I'm driving 100 miles round trip on snow-covered roads this means I could be out of AWD on my return trip. Does the Nissan Rouge Hybrid not have this issue? The video did say they have a mechanical AWD system. Does than mean it can stay in AWD longer? Thanks.

I don't get why the hybrid Rogue is your favorite version of the vehicle...especially when the additional MPG gain is only 2-3 over the non-hybrid version and you loose the trunk space/3rd seat and the adaptive cruise control.

The gain is larger in real world driving depending on how you drive it. The payback period is 3-4 years for the average driver. I do miss the radar cruise but I think it's a valid trade for the emergency 3rd row.

Hey Alex, Why do you say that the previous 2016 Rogue was 72 dB at 50 mph? The only review I can find prior to this 2017 review is the 2014/2015 review, where you say that the cabin noise is 68.5 dB at 50 mph, which would seem to be better than the 2017 which you say is 70 dB at 50 mph? Did you do a 2016 review of the Rogue, and did the noise get 1.5 dB worse in that year? I was under the assumption that Rogue didn't change for the 2016 year compared to 2014/2015? Thanks for the fabulously detailed reviews!

I cannot say what caused the variance, but the 72dB score was taken in a dealer provided 2016 model. It is possible that Nissan removed some insulation between the 2014 model we tested and the 2016 model we tested. That isn't terribly uncommon, companies will tweak things after having been on the market a year to adjust things for better or worse.

Alex, what did you mean by saying that we cannot use the AWD lock on normal pavement? What does it mean that the vehicle will "bind"?

Using it on pavement puts extra stress and strain on the system. When you are turning a car, all four wheels are spinning at *different* speeds. This is why cars have differentials, they allow one wheel to spin at a different speed than the other. The Rogue, like many crossovers and pickups, does not have a center differential, it is simply a clutch pack. So when the clutch is fully locked the front and rear axles cannot spin at different speeds. When turning tight this will feel like the car doesn't want to turn, and depending on teh surface you'll hear wheels chirp and slip because it needs to spin faster/slower than it is.

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport is smaller then the Rogue, the smaller version has been in Europe for a while, don't know much about it, but might be something to look for too, all-wheel drive is an option, but it sounds like the motor is kind of small (the EU is all about saving on gas)

Hey ALex or anyone here, Could you explain the the differences between the mechanical and electric AWD systems. I've been seeing new cars come with electric AWD but I don't do see a lot of information about it. Even the new STI comes with Electic AWD.

It's very simple. There's not that many electric AWD systems in cars that are not fully electric, infact there's not even many electric cars that have AWD (Tesla Model X does) - so it's really down to the RAV4 Hybrid at the moment - so I'll talk about that. The RAV4 is 'e-AWD' because it is AWD but the rear axle is only electrically powered. The front wheels are powered by the gasoline engine and the normal front electric motor that makes a total of 194 HP. However the transmission is only in the front, not going to the rear wheels. So in order to make it AWD, they added a 67 HP electric motor straight to the rear axle with out a transmission. If you think about it, it is literally the normal FWD RAV4 Hybrid with an extra motor on the back. Electric AWD is different because of two reasons (at least for this car). Reason 1: The rear wheels have instant torque from the electric motor. The front wheels are driven by the engine which does not have instant torque. The front wheels are also driven by an electric motor too - which has instant torque, but it is a less powerful electric motor. Reason 2: The engine and front motor make much more HP to the front wheels than the single rear motor gives to the back. Basically, you're going to have more shove in the back for a second or two, and then you'l have more power from the front afterwards. It would feel weird especially in rain or snow. Mostly because the back wheels have less power and thus are less capable making the car predominantly FWD and will give you torque steer. Additionally though, this means problems with your AWD system failing are slim to none because there's no linkage to break or bind. And if something is wrong with the front engine or motor or transmission, or the rear motor, you can presumably still drive the car. (If the front powertrain is damaged though, you'l only have a few miles you'll be able to go and will only have 67 HP. If there are problems with the rear, you won't have AWD.) For pure electric cars (cars that aren't hybrids and dont have gas or engines), they can either use a normal mechanical linkage (Which i talk about below) to all 4 wheels to one electric motor (although most electric cars dont use a transmission), or can have 2, 3, or 4 motors to power either each axle individually or each wheel individually, with no transmission or mechanical linkage. Mechanic AWD is merely the same AWD cars have had forever - just a linkage between both axles to the engine and transmission to give equal power to all 4 wheels, but dropping fuel economy significantly and upping the chances of wear and tear or damage. The only difference with Hybrid mechanical AWD is of course the fact that there is also an electric motor along with that engine to send both of it's power through that linkage. So you'll have more torque and better fuel economy, but presumably more chance of something going wrong.

Nope. I don't even like the Nissan Rogue because it's the same body style as 2017. And the competitors (Cr-v, Rav-4, CX-3, and Forester) Are all redesigned making it a bit larger than the older models, while the Rogue, Escape (2020 Escape will be revealed on April 2), and other competitors are still small. However, you should check out the 2020 "Redesigned" Nissan Rogue Sport. (Which is basically the 2018 Nissan Qashqai, which are made in another country)

As noted, Rogue is the X-Trail. Qashqai will be the Rogue _Sport_. (smaller than standard Rogue). There are currently *no* Qashqai hybrids (possibly available in 2018).

it is bro. 170hp is mediocre and weak. It also has a clicking noise coming from the front of the vehicle when turning. it happens after 1k miles.
