The Kicks may not have AWD (sad trombone) but on the other hand it's quite simply the more practical Nissan Versa. With just enough tech to make bargain hunters happy, the Kicks also boats some stellar discounts, high fuel economy and a big cargo area. Sadly if you need AWD, you need to look somewhere else.

Never will understand the hyper obsession car journalists have with AWD. I remember when only 3 or 4 cars that cost over $50,000 (back when money was worth something) were AWD and everyone else still got to work and to the grocery store in one piece and on time.

I just purchased a 2023 Nissan Kicks SR With the Premium Package. I traded my 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE (top trim) with 7,300 miles on it. What a great car it was and I owned 3 Mirages (2015, 2017, 2021) and never had 1 issue. My Mirages also had the Jatco CVT-7 which the Kicks uses also. I had been with Mitsubishi since 2015 but since they are not bringing out a new Mirage and it will be discontinued for 2025 I had to switch brands and I hated that. After months of research I was down to wanting a Nissan. I looked at the Versa, Kicks, Sentra and Altima. Clearly the Kicks was the one for me and I knew it the moment I was behind the wheel. I could not find any other vehicle close to its price ($26,130.00 was my Kicks SR with Premium Package) that came with so many features. I researched the Kicks alot and Nissans CVT issues they had. Since then they have been much better and are not having the issues like they used too and have redesigned many of their CVT’s and the Kicks uses the Jatco CVT-7 RE0F11B which I mentioned was in my Mirage with slightly different tuning of course. The CVT-7 overall has been a pretty good little CVT. So as far as features goes this super little CUV is packed full and really like a quality vehicle. It is loaded and I mean loaded with things like a surround view 360 camera (no one else had this for the price), heated front seats, heated steering wheel, sharp looking zero gravity primatex seats, 8 speaker Bose Audio with build in speakers in drivers headrest (head rest speakers unique to Kicks and no competitors have it), led headlights, led fog lights, led tail lights, led daytime running lights, 8 inch touch screen with wifi, apple car play, android auto, sirius xm, Nissan Connect with emergency services and SOS button, push button start, auto climate control, remote start with intelligent climate control that auto adjust interior temperature, digital gauge cluster screen, adaptive cruise, heated side mirrors, electronic park brake, forward collision alert and braking with pedestrian braking, rear auto brake so you don’t hit anything backing up and it works I tested it and also I could find no competitors that had this feature in this price range, lane departure warning with lights and vibrating steering wheel, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear park assist, warnings on camera screen all the way around vehicle to objectives or pedestrians, active ride management module with trace assist and active engine braking (SR), 17 inch alloys, 2 front and 2 rear usb ports, vehicle security system, Nissan Connect app and so much more. The SR Premium is loaded. The Kicks feels like a larger vehicle than it is. It’s extremely roomy inside and has a high SUV like seating position front and rear with loads of head and leg room. It has a huge 25 cubic foot cargo bay which is big for its size. It has a very substantial feel to it while driving and feels safe with some heft to it. It has pretty good ground clearance too at 7 inches for a FWD Crossover. I got it in the Boulder Gray Pearl which is so sharp and unique looking and I got the Titanium Silver like color wheels not the Black. The visibility is very good all the way around and material quality inside is very good. In the cargo bay the whole area is lined and carpeted on the sides its very nice. Another thing is the headlights, wow! They have a great beam pattern and shine very far. I came from a 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE (top trim) and it had led headlights but they were the projector beam style. Personally I have always liked reflector style leds vs projector style leds because the projectors have such a sharp cut off on low beam. I love led headlights and could never go back to halogen lol. I have tested the RAB (rear automatic braking) a few times and it works. Backing into my driveway once ai get to the red line on the back up camera and maybe 12 inches from my fence you feel the brake pedal go down and hear that funny ABS like automated noise lol and it displays a message that its ben activated. So cool. Very few cars have RAB. The Kicks is not available with a sunroof which I did not want as I am always hot in the Summer and blast the A/C on high all Summer. My Eclipse Cross I had came with the dual Panoramic Roof and I had it closed and the shades closed 90% of the time and do the same when I drive the other Eclipse Cross we still have. Competition: I would consider the Hyundai Venue, Kia Soul and 2024 Chevy Trax the closest competitors to the Kicks. They are working on a new Kicks to come out as a 2025 but I would wait 1-2 years before getting one until all the bigs are worked out as with an all new model they always have some issues. For example the 2024 Nissan Sentra was refreshed for 2024 with styling and feature updates (mid cycle refresh) and they also updated the transmission. Well a Sentra they had in transit was not coming until December as they were called back in due to a transmission software or module issue as it was a newly updated CVT. So ai skipped right over the Sentra. Anyway back on point. The Hyundai Venue is a good little SUV and I had looked at them and looked at the top trim Venue Limited and it was nicely equipped and was like $24,500.00 for a loaded top trim. I just felt the styling was a little plain, it was much smaller especially in the rear. With the Kicks it has extremely long front seat tracks so in a lot of the pics and vids online it looks like the Kicks does not have much rear seat room and thats not the case. I am 5’11” and I sit half way back in the tracks so in the rear seat sitting behind my self I still have several inches between my knees and the front seat and same with the passenger side so test out the front t seat position then check the rear seat. I slid the driver seat all the way back and I could not reach the pedals and I have long legs lol. Between the Venue and Kicks it more so comes down to styling as they are very closely comparable. I think the Kicks is quieter and felt nicer. The Denim color in the Venue in top trim Limited gives it a neat matching Denim interior which is the one I would go for its really premium looking inside for the price point! Now as for the all new 2024 Chevy Trax its an extremely nice vehicle and has a neat Turbo 3 cylinder. It has a massive interior and the rear seat is limo like. It has been getting top reviews too online. I just worried about GMs build quality and it being an all new model I was a little nervous in case of bugs needing worked out. The top trim Trax Activ or Trax 2RS came in around $27,000.00 when fully equipped and adding the packages to the top trim. Plus on the Trax, Soul or Venue you cannot get a surround view 360 camera or RAB rear automatic braking which were 2 of the main things that impressed me with the Kicks. The Soul is a pretty good vehcile and we had one when they first came out a 2010 Alien Green Soul Exclaim top trim and being its first year out in the USA it was a great vehicle for usb with no issues the 3.5 years we owned it. Its boxy and has a super nice interior. But the main thing that scares me with Hyundais and Kias is all the engine, brake and fire recalls and them all being related to one another. Plus alot of their engines burn oil. I had a relatives 2018-or 2019 Kia Sportage burst into flames months after being bought new. Was a total loss. I take my dogs with me everywhere and leave them in the car locked for like 2 mins at most to run in post office for our works mail and would worry about a fire as they state that it can happen while the cars driving or after it parked. Plus my Sisters 2019 Kia Optima S had to have a full engine replacement due to knocking and hot smells. It just seems like Kia and Hyundai cant get the Fire issue sorted as its been going on so long and still going on with new car recalls for similar issues. I did not want to go full on SUV but I like a hatch for its rear wiper and cargo area. Well the Kicks is a CUV and FWD only and it really feels more like an SUV to me than it does a Car. Thats a good thing! I decided on the Kicks SR over the Versa SR due to the added ground clearance, rear wiper, surround view 360 cameras (was a main selling point for me as our Red Eclipse Cross has it and my Blue Eclipse Cross I had also had it and loved it), and the Bose audio system with headrest speakers and wow it is a really good system. The Nissan Sentra and Versa sat very low to the ground even way lower than my Mirage and it was way too low for me. So the Kicks is perfect if you want a sharp looking and safe little CUV that is packed with features galore than the Kicks is a great choice!!!

Hi. Are there any changes for the 2023 Kicks ? I like the look and the roomy interior but it didn't have a good feel when driving ( like you said, the engine noise even when riding 65mph on the fwy.) but as long as the noise doesn't mean that the engine is overworked/stressed all the time & that it's mostly cus of thinner insulation, I am fine with that. I do drive on fwy with traffic everyday and take roadtrips so I like a car that will last a long time. How is this compare to the Toyota CHR ? thx

I'm not surprised by the underpowered aspect of it. I'm a little surprised by the uncomfortable. Alex is a pretty tall dude and is pretty specific about seats that he likes and dislikes. Of course he was driving a high-end trim model and I'm sure your rental was a low-end trim model maybe the seat design is a little bit different. The big thing for me on this vehicle would be the CVT transmission. I don't mind them I drive a Prius myself. But Nissan CVT transmissions are absolutely total garbage when it comes to long-term reliability. And the Prius while not fast 0 to 60 has decent electric torque to get you up to 30 or 40 miles an hour. And it's not really a CVT. And it's reliable.

Unless it's a bulletproof Prius-like eCVT (also found on Ford Hybrids and Pacifica), or even better, a full electric drive train, I just don't like the idea of dealing with the complexities of everything else. I'll tell you why. When they tell you the cargo space of a hatch/CUV, they're including the top space which almost no one uses because it blocks rear visibility for the driver. So in reality, the usable cargo space of the hatch is about the same as the cargo space of the sedan trunk.

@@braetonwilson4296 yeah but the top space won't fit another 2-3 suitcases. If it could fit them, Alex would have shoved them in there and counted the total as 5-6. Once you put in 3 suitcases there is basically no more space. I think the SUV manufacturers are rigging these numbers.

At the Kicks price point shouldn't it be Sentra vs Kicks?
@dedreandixon4620
@dedreandixon4620 2 жыл бұрын
And this is why manufacturers are feeding into the CUV trend. Profit. You're right, the Kicks is essentially a SLIGHTLY lifted hatchback Versa, yet its priced almost exactly the same as the Sentra. And on the inside, the Sentra is a much more "premium" product than the Kicks. But I guess that's the premium for cargo space.

@@dedreandixon4620 You're spot on! For manufacturers, making these small unibody CUVs doesn't cost them anymore than making a unibody sedan like the Versa or Sentra. It is dangerously slow because we're not longer in the 1990's. Also we don't have nearly as many cars with that slow of speed anymore. All the base family sedans are getting like mid 7 second now. The car simply not efficient for what it is. I know because my father owns a 2019 accord 1.5T. It is way more powerful, and averages 33.8MPG over 27K miles. Obviously the accord is also much heavier and is much more comfortable. Simply put, I see little value in cars like this unless your budget really cannot go anymore. Where you start losing value is when you get into premium/luxury segment, that's where dollar for dollar value slips. Family sedan is the best value proposition these days, not these tiny fake SUVs. Family sedans generally give you far more standard equipment (like active safety systems) or other nice touches that are optional in the subcompact segment, for not much more $.

LED Headlighhts do not MELT Snow or Ice, Halogens Do. If you are buying a Car because of Lights you should take a Bus. AWD although handy at times is not a Necessity, FWD works just fine so does RWD. If you Need AWD buy a 4x4 you can turn it on and off and the Maintenance for AWD is more costly. How you say? Why, you can not Buy a single Tire or a Pair of Tires for AWD, If you do it throws off Stabilitrac and you get bad sensor readings which cause other systems to turn on or off leaving your cars computer confused and you not knowing what is wrong, so back to the shop you go. Only to find out you needed 4 tires and now your sensors are all messed up and your cars Computer may be Damaged. That all costs Money. 4x4 you can install 1 Tire or 2 Tires on the same Axle and it will be just fine. If you are so worried about Jamming your entire Wardrobe into the back of this car including 50 pairs of shoes, your dog and 2.5 kids you need a Truck not a Kicks. However as a Mom Mobile or Grocery Getter/School Drop off you are fine. Not designed to Carry a Rock and Roll Bands Equipment, the 4 stooges in the band yes.
