I just bought a 2018 EX which is identical to the 2017 model. The CR-V made just about everybody's top pic for small SUV's. In the first 500 miles I'm averaging 32.5 MPG in Eco mode, which is astounding for a conventional ICE. Safety features sold me on this car, especially low-speed follow ACC for traffic jams. It rides quietly, like a luxury creampuff, and handles competently. Electronic connectivity is top-notch, with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The 10 way electric seats should be comfy over long trips, where the lane keep assist and AAC will reduce driver stress. My only concern is that some drivers report oil dilution issues with the 1.5 turbo engine that could affect long-term engine durability. Honda was forced to recall about 300,000 vehicles in China, but since it's not a safety issue, the US has not required Honda to recall. Let's hope the problems remain isolated and that Honda does the right thing and fixes all issues.

I know your comment is old, but you should look up "CR-V center buckle issue". You can NOT have 3 people seating in the back if you have one car seat behind the driver. The buckle positioning is criss-crossed, which prevents the middle seat from being buckled.

We just bought the 2017 EX (gunmetal metallic), and my wife loves it. The ride is smooth and quiet. The Honda sensing is nice, not too intrusive. The seats are comfortable both front and rear. Now if it just holds up like the 2007 CRV we traded for this one. Great video was helpful in deciding on our purchase. Wife watched it quite a few times.

I test drove the new cx-5 and cr-v the last weekend. The new cx-5 engine made more noise and felt less powerful accelerating onto the highway compared to the new turbo 4 in the cr-v. Both are great vehicles but I'm weighing more toward the cr-v now.

Alex, I like your detailed reviews in general. For this CRV review, you didn't mention some of the convenient features new for the 2017. For example: std keyless entry, keyless start, walk away lock, remote start, adjustable power lift gate, adjustable trunk floor, handsfree power lift gate (Touring), Apple CarPlay, electric brake hold for red lights...and more. My suggestion is that you can spend less time comparing the exterior grill and LED head lights. Styling is a personal preference. It is what it is. There's no need to explain and compare too much detail. Either I like it or hate it.

Great. review Alex. I really enjoy watching your channel. I have a question, do you think that this trend towards downsizing engines and adding turbo is the right choice? European market shows that downsizing has a dark. side, lower reliability with time and mileage and higher maintenance cost. Personally I prefer bigger displacement, less stressed engines. Real world driving also shows that small turbocharged engine will consume as much gas ,if not more, then bigger one. Also I know from experience that when loaded with 4 people and couple bags in the trunk, the engine definitely suffers from not being powerful enough.

Great review Alex. I looked at and sat in both the 2017 CRV Touring and the 2018 Equinox Premier with a gas engine. The CRV interior is better, but the leather seat in the Equinox is more comfortable. The diesel is due out September 2017 and no one at the Chevy store I was at knew what trim level it came in , or what the price increase would be for the little diesel. Also, the Equinox Premier has a unique top down "bird's eye" park assist feature that uses four cameras to create a top down image of your car and the surrounding cars and things. Pretty neat! The Equinox AWD in the Premier trim priced about $34,800 without the sunroof, but Chevy has plenty of offers that might make it closer to the CRV Touring which includes a sunroof. The interior of the Equinox is so-so and the cargo rear seat tilt forward handles are very flimsy. I feel the CRV EX-L and Touring are far better values versus the Equinox in similar trims. Considering the gasoline versions, the CRV with the 1/5L turbo has very impressive mileage is certainly worthy of consideration. But with a 40+ mpg diesel Equinox, that can all be overlooked so long as it prices more near the $30k and not close to the $40k range.

Nice review! A couple clarifications: 1) There's no AUX port in any CRV trim level. 2) The moonroof is standard, not optional, for all trims other than the LX. Also, why no trunk comfort index rating? Is that not a thing on CUVs and hatches? Even more video showing the flat load floor would have been cool. Thanks.

As always, great review Alex! Right now i'm debating on the Honda CR-V touring and the Subaru Outback.
@tomtalker20006 жыл бұрын
I'm in the same position as you are right now looking at both 2017 models. However, i haven't test driven either yet. And to be fair you can't compare the Outback 3.6R to the CR-V at all. That particular model is in a different league altogether. So make sure to test drive the 2.5i Limited Outback against either the CR-V EX or EX-L trim to be fair. Now when it comes to reliability there both damn close to each other. However, the Subaru Outback hasn't changed since it's refresh back in 2015. So it's got the advantage over the Honda of 3yrs on the market with minor tweaks here and there. But nothing to warrant staying away from the vehicle over anything major mechanically speaking. Where as the CR-V refresh was done in 2017. And is only in it's second year with the 2018 virtually untouched from it's debut. That being said, without even test driving either vehicle i'd go with the Subaru. The 2.5i is a VERY underrated engine even though it's got less horsepower than the CR-V it suits most peoples needs just fine. However, it's HUGE advantage over the CR-V is it's NOT A TURBO. And that's where i get concerned with the CR-V's long-term reliability. What is nice is that CR-V Turbo doesn't need premium fuel and can run just fine on 87 octane. But regardless if you still want to get the best performance from a turbo. You really should be filling it with premium fuel. So the Outback wins HANDS DOWN in this very important area. Not to mention it's AWD is THE BEST out there and even Subaru can't hold a candle to it. So that all said, good luck with your decision i know how tough it can be. Hopefully my points make your decision a little easier.

Excellent review Alex, as always. I'm cross shopping Subarus and this car, I wish you would have included Subaru. Not all assisted drive packages are the same. I sit in 0-20 mph traffic for hours a day and it really matters to me. I look at this first in my car decision. I was shocked when the CRV would lane CENTER and had one of the best adaptive cruise controls I had tested outside of Tesla. Rav4 and Eyesight don't lane center, they all bounce the car from side to side. Lane centering is much more valuable to be more relaxed but still engaged. I'm not a shell for Honda, but could not believe the content level of the EX-L for its price point along with 29 mph, seems to defy the laws of physics and finance. Other than the engine, the car seems underpriced and almost near luxury. I'm not really looking for an economy car but the CRV seems to be in actually a near lux in sheep's clothing. The seats were my first wakeup call.

One thing I would like pointed out is which type of adaptive cruise control each vehicle has. There is a big difference between basic adaptive cruise control and adaptive cruise control with stop/start functionality. I have the latter in my car and I can't imagine ever going back to basic adaptive cruise control, which is only useful in fairly smooth flowing freeway travel.

The CRV does have the low speed follow. It will come to a stop all by itself with a car in front of it stopping.

The CRV does not have stop/start functionality. The owner's manual even states it has limited stopping ability and is not for use in heavy traffic. The Honda ACC in no way compares to something like the Hyundai Santa Fe Smart Cruise Control, which has stop/start functionality.

I have only a couple of small complaints about the car - the driver seat belt retractor is sometimes troublesome and the location of the on off button for the CC is way to close to the set button which has caused me to disconnect the CC unintentionally a couple of times. Nice car. I don't own a CRV 2017. But I test drove a Honda CRV 2017 EXL model, and still they have the driver seat vibration. It was very obvious when driving at low speed in 2017. Sales man told me that he will get me another car. I told him No thanks. Better Honda fixes this rather than ignoring. So before buying please test drive with idling, park, ac on/off, lights on/off, adjust your seats up/down/forward/backward..some combination makes the front seats vibrate...the engineers need to get something right..looks like this is been lingering for years.. BEWARE. Rest looks great. some might not like exterior - I too but I can live with that.

Me too have an argument wether to go with CRV or CX5. Our CRV here has 3rd row seats which is useless due to it's space but definitely score some points on some people. I haven't test drive CRV yet but I test drove BMW X1 and CX5, definitely going with CX5 rather than the X1. It has the comfort and quiet cabin which is important aspects for me. Can't wait to test drive the CRV. If the CRV at par or better on comfort department, I will go with the CRV. The pricing of CRV is cheaper than CX5 too.

Alex, Please keep indicating what vehicles have limited adjustments for the passenger seat. Honda does not provide height adjustments on any of it's vehicles I've examined. In addition, the following vehicles also do not have height adjustments for the passenger seat: Toyota (RAV4, Highlander), Subaru (Forester, Outback). However, Ford (Escape, Edge), Kia (Sorento) and Hyundai (Santa Fe & Santa Fe Sport) DO have height adjustments for the passenger seat. Apparently, Honda, Toyota, Subaru and other auto manufacturers decided to cut costs and say the hell with the passenger seat comfort, even on their top trim level vehicles. Why do I think this is a big deal? My wife and I are trying to find a nice SUV/crossover for traveling, and since we periodically rotate the driving duties, the comfort of the passenger seat is essential. The Honda CR-V passenger's seat, even in the top-of-the-line Touring model, feels like you're sitting on the floor. I'm scraping 6 ft in height (with long legs), my wife at 5' 4" - we both looked at each other & laughed when we sat in the passenger seat because it was so low. Comfort-wise for me, however, it wasn't so funny. Other cars without the height adjustment for the passenger side set the seat's height at an arbitrary level, and if you're lucky, it's OK, but maybe not..... It's a real shame that some manufacturers feel they have to cut corners like seat adjustments on cars reaching $40k & above. Our soon-to-be trade-in, a 2003 Toyota Camry XLE with cloth interior, has FULL range power seats for BOTH occupants, and are remarkably comfortable. Sad. getting less for more money? Anyway, Alex, you are the "gold standard" for car reviewers on the 'net, and you keep getting better all the time. Thanks for providing detailed and objective reviews! We all appreciate it!

There are already several YT and car mag reviews comparing the two and the new CX5 only looks and feels faster. It's not actually faster. It's slower to 60 by almost a second, take longer to brake, and doesn't even corner as well in the slalom. The CRV is much bigger on the inside, yet technically smaller on the outside, has more power, and yet better fuel economy. Styling is the only subjective win for the Mazda, while objectively the CRV wins in actual driving performance and pragmatic factors, which is the whole point of an SUV. No wonder the CRV is again top of the review and sales charts for this segment and mostly has been for the past 2 decades.

Rode in a 2017 CRV Touring with 25,000 miles on the stock Hankook tires. The tires were very noisy - noticeably so. The road noise was noticeable over the present larger Jeep SUV i drive now, but tolerable. However the tire noise was an issue that would get to me on a longer trip.

Every dealer is going to scrimp and save somewhere. And usually that is on two things tires and paint job. You can't knock a vehicle for having OEM tires just put a good set of Michelin or Continentals on it and you'll be AMAZED at the difference. My 2010 Mazda 5 Grand Touring came with the dreaded Toyo OEM tires which are prone to premature tire wear and cupping on my particular vehicle. So i switched them out for a higher tire size went from 205 to 215 not a huge difference in size. But the brand is what made the difference as i am now riding on Continental PureContact tires. And the ride is MUCH MUCH smoother and i didn't lose any handling which Mazda's are noted for being excellent at. In fact i feel safer on these tires especially during the winter months. They grip the snow and rain fantastic and break well also. So 9 out of 10 times it's usually the tires NOT the vehicle. So follow my advice and i guarantee you'll love your CR-V...!!!

i bought the 2016 rav 4 xle but i wish for the CRV turbo now BUT fyi the front axels of most Hondas will break as they get older above possibly 150K miles

I'd like to get an older 1996 with the tire in the back as a 2nd CRV they never go out of style, I see some on the road and I envy them, rugged and basic.

Great job, Alex. Love the addition of "Pros and Cons" section in your latest videos. Quick question, how's HondaLink in this bad boy? It's been a thorn in people's side for a LONG time for it's laggy User Interface, but it appears slightly sharper and peppy in this new CR-V. What did you experience?

I'll wait till they add tuning knob and preset buttons. I don't want to stop and use my reading glasses each time I want to change the station. I can't have a car without usable radio.

Worth mentioning; the Honda 1.5 liter turbo engine requires regular unleaded gas, not premium fuel like most other turbo engines. Good for Honda!!!

Looking at specs I’m concerned about headroom. Honda says front-seat headroom on an EX w/moonroof is 38.0 and for some reason drops to 37.8 for Touring. Either way that is tight for an SUV. My wife’s 2015 Civic EX has 37.9 and at 6’2 I barely fit.
