I bought the CX-50 Select model in Wind Chill Pearl (White) and I love it. Roomy, comfortable, handles VERY well. By the way, the car is not classified as an SUV, it's an MPV. UPDATE: At 4,700 miles and the car has settled in nicely, the naturally aspirated engine is running very well, the transmission has settled in and the car is surprisingly very fast and comfortable. I'm lovin' it.

Mazda's legroom numbers are utter nonsense, they use a completely different way to measure than most others. In reality it has significantly less legroom than Acura RDX, Hyundai Tucson, etc. you can easily see the difference if you look at Alex' videos of each model.
@barryma7065

Mazda's claimed legrooms are just absurd. Both CX-5 and CX-50 have way less room than RDX or even RAV4.
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Their combined legroom doesn’t account for the thickness of their front seats, which are ridiculously thick, thus not accounting for actual (usable) legroom in the back. My in-laws have a CX-5 and at 5’9, I am not comfortable in the back. My knees are stuck in the seats in front (and my in-laws are both shorter than I am).

I've moved on since the original Mazda 3 but have always glanced@ Mazda from afar with a very warm spot & fondness. They've already punched above their weight & have turned out fantastic cars since my Mazda 3 gen 1. The CX-50 continued that trend.

It's the pricing range that tells the story, Mazda really did their homework with the CX-50. Match up the different trims with the competition, then factor in price - Mazda's got some skin in the game! Thanks to the black-out pieces, this version of the CX-50 looks very good to my eyes. Overall, this should at least earn consideration over the usual Lexus/Acura choice.

Exactly! It's a very direct competitor in size and interior quality, though it has no off-road pretensions. They may compare it to the hybrid when that shows up. I'm glad they'll be using a Toyota hybrid system, as they're the best, but I hope it's adequately powerful and refined. The RAV4 powertrain is OK, and I'd love to see it in this roomier and nicer body, as the current RAV4, with its fake truckiness, has never impressed me. It looks cheap.

Nice to see the CX-50 coming out : can't wait for the AoA full review in your home turf. I would agree, Ryan, that the chrome strip between the tail lights would look great. I love the idea of the RDX, but it is . . . unusual looking in my opinion. The CX-50 is much nicer looking.

This as a hybrid would be very interesting! As someone who mostly drives in heavy traffic the hybrid system would be huge fuel efficiency advantage. 1 year later and still no news about the hybrid. It was first mentioned from Mazda that they would launch a hybrid cx50 after a year or so from the original launch of the cx50 but still nothing. Not even a hint. either its not coming or its going to be delayed so much that by the time it comes out every other competitor already has their foothold in the market. These are built in the same factory as the Toyota Corolla cross I heard. Their collab with Toyota has me hoping that they would stick the Rav4 hybrid engine into it. Though I wonder if its going to use the same eCVT as well. Was looking at a Rav4 hybrid, but they're hard to find or the prices are awful. Now with the Carolla Cross Hybrid looming as well.

I have a Mazda and an Acura in the Seattle area. There are no good Mazda dealers after one of them bought the other. Acura dealers are not great, but still OK. They never damaged my car and repairs were fine. 2 Mazda dealers damaged the car twice and did a sticking brake job. We made them fix for all 3, but it was a fight. People less mechanically inclined would have been on the hook to pay for all of the issues.

Great, thorough initial review, Alex! And, it certainly help to get another perspective from your co-host Brian. As a former Mazda 6 ('14 & '16 GT) and Miata MX-5 ('96 M-Edition), I love how all their cars drive & handle. Though the 6-spd is short on gear count compared to their competitors, it's the drivability that mattered the most that other vehicles that had more gears lack. The handling is better than the competition. And, the interior is simply the best compared to other at the given price point (even better than several that cost more). If I don't have a need for a full-size truck, I would still be a Mazda owner. This would certainly be a good option to replace my wife's '15 Honda Pilot. As for the off-looking center vent, I would wrap the chrome strip in black to make it more integrated with the interior.

As a 2020 CX5 owner wanting to get rid of it, there's a theme I keep hearing in videos comparing the 50 to the 5. More Road noise, seat comfort still not fixed, slower, less headroom, rougher ride. And a pet peeve of mine, STILL has piano black inside. It looks great no doubt. Although I think the word off-road is being used far too often. If plastic cladding = off-road then Mazda has you covered. but 45 series 20" tires? Nah, this isn't any more off-road than other CUV's really. It has a bit more clearance, AWD is electronically programmed a little different than other Mazda's, that's about it. The Meridian edition is where it might get interesting. Plus they really need a Hybrid. But the price is really already up there. It looks GREAT though, and I hate plastic cladding, but at least on the top trim it looks really good. But I don't think there's enough here for me to move from CX5 to CX-50. If you are looking for just another CUV for around town and highway as a daily, I'd wait and see what the new CRV is going to be. That should be a hybrid out of the gate....but it will have a CVT which is sad.

I was so excited for this model to come out. I like the CX five but it kind of missed the mark. This tries to improve on that but it’s not luxury and it’s not off-road. And the dealership experience certainly is not premium. The top trim price is way too high, and real world mpg feedback from owners puts it in the low 20’s. Sorry I don’t care how fun it would be to drive the turbo model I just can’t accept those MPG‘s.

Looking forward to the full review with the detailed comparisons. I am not sure why Mazda chose to create so many trims of the CX-50. It seems they are taking on a lot for a brand new model (even though the parts are coming from models already in the market), and expecting customers to navigate through the tiers. Keep in mind that Mazda has not always been on their own. They had a longtime collaboration with Ford (primarily for the transmission, maybe?) that did not go well for Mazda. That probably explains their resistance to collaborate until now with Toyota.

I had also wondered if the ugly breakup with Ford has made them reluctant to partner with anyone. Ford owned a significant percentage of Mazda and the partnership was a deep one, with the smaller Fords closely related to Mazdas. The Mazda 323 was the basis for the Escort, and later the Mazda3 and Focus were related. The older Fusion was closely based on the Mazda6, which used a Ford V-6 as an option. Mazda and Ford developed the Escape and sister the Tribute, based on a Mazda platform. Ford got quite a lot from their ownership share of Mazda.

I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazdas. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda for instance. At the time I was shopping for my car, they had fuel dilution problems with some of their engines. Similar to my problem but worse. They put out a bulletin and fixed it. Hi, Never a Subaru fan, I wanted a new CR-V to replace my old CR-V after having tree Hondas. Nope... Disappointment with the new CR-V (small engine + turbo + CVT). After a THOROUGH research, test drives, nose-to-nose comparisons I decided to make an "exception" for Subaru's CVT. So I bought a new Outback. After one year with the Outback and Forester (as his running mate - my close friends car), and rethinking the whole story, I realize that I bought the best affordable compact crossover in the market. Yes, it's a crossover. However, 95% of all crossovers are wagons by definition. The new CX-50 is not and exception - it's a wagon. And it's a crossover of course. I test drove two CX-50 (turbo and non-turbo) and compared them cheek to cheek with my nicely tuned Outback Premium. While a nice car, the CX-50 won't hold a candle to the Outback in any aspect (except for dynamics - in case of turbo). The cargo space is petty impressive. The driver's position is still not perfect but noticeably better than the awkwardness of CX-5 (it was one of the candidates! ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqGymmCAn5qJbrc&t=s

Mazda is actually the one designing and building all the new powertrains in the partnership with Toyota. Not the other way around. So yes, Mazda did finally partner up with another manufacturer. But they’re still doing all the design work and building. So some future Toyota models will use Mazda designed and built engines, not the opposite. A quick Google search will show that Mazda has been designing new inline-4 and inline-6 engines for the passed 3-4 years. Including one with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. These engines will find their way into Mazda’s new “large architecture” RWD drive based upcoming products, but also into vehicles like this CX-50.

Why does @Mazda insist on sticking with the 6-spd transmission when 8+ is the norm for automatic transmissions at this time? They could use the Aisin 8-spd and tune the lockup to be as aggressive as they have it in their 6-spd and get better ratio spread and spacing. Truly an “almost” vehicle.

I would like to see an 8 speed, but the reliability of the 6 speed in undeniable. I also like it still has a shifter unlike an Acura with push buttons or others with dials. My only real need for an 8 speed isn't driving dynamics, I don't expect this to be an AMG Mercedes, but I do want lower MPG which the 8 speed should improve.

Good point, though I think the GV70 is really in a class above this. The Mazda competes well with the semi-luxury Acura and Buick brands, and the lower-end Lexuses, but not well against the truly luxurious brands. I'd have to put Genesis in that category now. The GV70 is really nice.

They removed a lot of features (heated rear seat, heated steering wheel, paddle shifters, LED combo taillight, adaptive front light) from lower trim levels for CX-50 when these features are available on lower trim levels for CX-5. It probably depends on what your looking for. The Outback is significantly faster while not requiring premium fuel, has more room while still having a nice interior and comfort oriented suspension. I'm interested in the non turbo version, or the hybrid version. Since the Rav 4 hybrid is tough to get, its the powertrain I'm interested in. The Rav4 currently is in about its 4th year in its current gen and its interior is, okay I guess. Given how much the scalperships are asking for it it doesn't seem great. If anything the CRV interior looks much better subjectively. But if I can get the Rav4's powertrain inside a CX50 and I'm not price gouged, I'm interested. Interesting to know if it would be an ecvt from the toyota as well, but its all proven to be pretty reliable. The worst part of Toyota are its dealers. Honda isn't much better.

Don't care about the lack of a chrome strip across the rear. Do care that the exhaust is surrounded by plastic. The wheels on what I'm seeing are part of the problem with today's vehicles. The profile is absurdly low. That might be why what your driving "feels firm". Also shows that nobody considers this an off road crossover. In this segment, look to the Bronco Sport if you want to go off road. Good engine choices. Acceleration is 'meh', but very usable. MPG is questionable. They don't seem to overdo the bells and whistles on this high end model. Hopefully, fewer in the lower end trim. I've driven the high end version of my car and feel no need to upgrade. Don't like the loud cabin. Good looking. Price is high, especially considering the size, but that seems to be the theme now. Put enough cash on the hood (once things stabilize) and I'd very much consider this.

Why is mazda so stubborn about not having touch? For a company who allegedly prioritizes ergonomics, one of the main functions people use in cars is INFURIATING. If CX-90 doesnt have a touch screen I won't even consider it. Also, pricing this like a luxury vehicle, mazda doesn't have that brand cache.
