This needs to be pointed out - the infotainment screen becomes a touchscreen while using Apple CarPlay, and you can work the screen while the vehicle is in motion. But once you navigate back to the main infotainment interface the touch capability is disabled. Mazda should seriously consider this setup for all their vehicles as it gives drivers more options.

I have this car. It's the best compact suv for the price. I've done a 4k mile roadtrip in it with ease. The steering feel I kid you not, is better than in my m4 competition. Mazda has low-key become the ultimate driving machine with mechanical type of feel where the bmw had gone in the opposite direction with all the electronics. This is the car for those who love to drive but need the practicality of a wagon with some light offroading capability.

I agree on the driving dynamics as I just purchased this car and I also have a 2020.m4 CP.. however the seats are to hard and the 20inch with the suspension, is a nightmare over imperfect roads

@@OMERDULI Yes the bottom part of the seat is too hard, agreed. My ass was in literal pain after a ten hour drive when I had taken it on that roadtrip, lol. With that said, the bottom part of the m4 seat isn't THAT much softer either. I find the seat comfort in both cars lacking. I guess I'd have to upgrade to an M5 to get truly comfy seats. I love how natural and progressive the brake pedal in the mazda feels. The bimmer has a very grabby brake feel, even in the comfort setting.

Their stylists have been remarkably consistent. The Mazda3 hatchback is a bit strange, but even it is stylish. I prefer the cleaner CX-5, but Mazda did the outdoorsy thing a lot better than Subaru, Toyota, etc.

Mazda did a good job. Still, I would've like the CX-50 to have the overall shape/lines similar to the CX-30. On the other hand, Mazda coherently keeps the Kodo design for all its cars, the Miata looking by far the best.

LOL Right? For my use I prefer the 17's on the CX5 sport/touring models over the GT's 19's for reduced road noise and increased highway comfort since we do a lot of road trips. The off-road marketing is just to satisfy the consumers image, Lets face it, even 95% of Jeep Wranglers are used to drive to work and drop kids off at soccer practice.

One of my daily-drivers is a 2019 CX-5 AWD that I purchased new. I shopped it against the German (and Italian) brands and am still 100% happy with my decision. Nice styling, comfy and ergonomic interior, good handling, good fuel economy, perfect reliability so far, etc. - were I to replace it, I'd go straight to the CX-50. I love what Mazda is doing these days. Amazing vehicles for the price bracket, and even beyond. Thanks as always for the excellent content, guys!

Thanks, for the video. Love your reviews and your sarcastic remarks and attitude. As a Mazda fan and happy owner of a 2019 CX-5 Signature, with over 58,000 trouble free miles. I was really looking forward to checking this one out. So far I like the overall look and design and the Terra Cotta leather color on the turbo model, but am disappointed in the lack of a 40/20/40 spilt rear seat and multi-link IRS rear suspension like my CX-5. Overall I still prefer the CX-5. I'm looking forward to seeing the Hybrid version. Hope it comes out soon. Thanks, again for your reviews.

I've owned a CX50 - Premium Plus since October 2022. Long story short, I absolutley love the car and have no regrets, nor would I have swapped it for a differnt vehicle in the same segment. Abosultely zero issues so far. The vehicle is extremely comfortable to drive in, and the styling is beautiful aside from the annoying dust/scrath magent in the center console. I'm not a fan of touch screens on my vehicles, so the rotating knob is the perfect and keeps me focused more on the road. My only complaint in the past few months is that the car slammed on the breaks twice thinking that I wasn't paying attention to the road. Both times happned at around 20-30 mph in a parking lot and also when coming to a stop at a red light. There seems to be a little too much sensitivity on this feature but again, this only happened twice so it's not a huge complaint. Aside from that, I hightly recommend this vehicle. I owned a Mazda3 for the past 5 years and had no issues with that vehicle and I hope the CX50 does the same to me.

Always enjoy SJ vids, great job guys. I went to look at the, then new RAV4 in 2019 and was really excited about it coming out, test drove it and kept looking. I was not looking at Mazda at all at the time and then saw a few vids on the CX5 turbo. We own a 2019 CX5 turbo now and love it to death, only a newer CX5 (hybrid), will get us to part with it. Test drove the CX50 as I was excited about how is looked. Went to get in and my sun glasses on top of my head hit the head liner ( good thing I am only 5' 11"). Then I noticed things were not lining up well, foam piece between A pillar and dash was sticking out, uneven panel gaps, etc. I dont think there is better cargo room than the CX5 (deeper by 2 inches or some useless thing and the CX5 is wider for cargo). Then there is the torsion beam rear suspension, come on Mazda people who buy your products do so because they enjoy driving! I'll stick with my Made in Japan CX5 thank you very much. My only 2 gripes with the CX5 are that the seats could be a little more comfortable for long distance (they are a bit too stiff and my butt starts going to sleep after about 2.5 to 3 hours, this is a common complaint) and the rear seat heater buttons and UBS ports should have been where the rear vents are instead of in the rear arm rest. Oh and yes an 8spd regular auto trans (same as their super reliable and great 6spd) might be an idea to get a bit better fuel economy but really for the performance you get from the 2.5 turbo and getting about 25-26mpg combined, I am not complaining.

Had one as a loaner while my cx5 was in the shop. It's nice, I like it better than my rav, but the cx5 I think drives better. Rear seat room is still an issue for us with the rear facing car seat - better than the 5, yes, but the rav I barely have to put the seat up.

Same story here. Our CX5 Signature was getting a wheel bearing replaced under warranty and got one of these as a loaner. I like how big it is but it doesn’t feel as planted as my wife’s CX5.

Great review, these CX-50’s are built as a Toyota/Mazda joint venture in Huntsville Alabama, where also the Toyota Corolla Cross is built, I’m very impressed with the overall performance and value of Mazda vehicles just recently purchasing a Mazda 3, a family member has a 2016 Scion which is a Toyota/Mazda joint venture vehicle with 200,000 miles with zero issues just normal required maintenance,

Have a VW Golf R. Family got the brand new CX-30 this year and we also saw CX-50 in the show room. As a Golf R owner, I love the new Mazda infotainment, Mazda interior and all their buttons. I know Mazda interior is usually feels a bit cheap but their new cars are definitely a lot better. All their buttons feel premium. First few uses, you are a little confused but after awhile, you are used to it. You can drive, and not take your eyes off the road to switch songs, radios, volumes etc (regardless of the steering wheel buttons). I can drive with one hand on the wheel, and leave the other on the arm rest and still be able to change songs and volumes without moving my arms at all.

I've had the CX-50 for about a month and around 2000 miles. It's a nice car with many little (some big) areas for improvement. I got rid of the 20" wheels. Went with 225/45/18. Vredestines. Looks better, rides a little better and are more practical on rough roads. The stearing is a bit heavy. Operating the radio is a nightmare. The car would definitely benefit from the addition of sound dreading materials. Engine, trans and handling are all very good. The interior is fine by me but the split door access on the console does it make much sense. The car is not perfect but I'm enjoying the ride!

Really really love the aesthetics but ultimately it’s utility folks buy these things for and while I’d probably take it over a rav, I think I’d still opt for the CX5 for dynamics since the 50 isn’t offering much more in the way of space+worse read suspension. Hard to ignore the new CRV with how much space it has for a similar footprint.

Next year Mazda is coming with a GV70 competitor I think it's the CX70 or CX7 or something like that and comes with an inline 6. Should be a pretty sweet option depending on packaging and pricing.

recently bought a turbo premium plus - no mention of the larger towing capacity, a big reason I chose this over the similar spec Subaru. So far it drives great, the color and interior get a ton of positive comments from strangers, but dang some of the safety features can really be annoying. Almost wish I went a spec down, but then lose the awesome zirrcon seats.

I'm a huge fan of Subaru but I'd buy this over a new Subaru simply because Subaru use a CVT. And I am one of those that DO go off road. So IF the cladding does provide some protection I'm all for it. I like the room in the Mazda VS the Subaru. And there is no ugly IPad in the Mazda and of course the fit and finish is world's better.

The CVT in the current Outbacks, particularly the Outback Wilderness, is actually pretty good. Definitely feels like a more modern transmission with more flexibility than the arguably dated and tired traditional 6-spd transmission used in the CX-50, so this is an interesting competition. I get it -- some people just don't like CVTs in principle, but Subaru is delivering a tolerable (if not good all around) iteration of it.

@@kevinnorwood7355 It’s not the optimal transmission for towing, I agree. But there are quite a few videos of folks touring cross country with Outbacks and small trailers. As long as the weight is kept in spec, it does the job without issue. The Wilderness final drive is also geared a bit lower as well, which helps.

@@zachv8286 You're one of the few people I've ever heard who find the Subaru CVT OK. It's usually hated with a passion by reviewers. I get why Subaru uses it in everything - like Mazda they're a small company that can't afford to offer much variety in their drivetrains. The coarse, loud, thirsty engines are no treat, either, though I do admire their compactness. Mazda's six-speed is obviously dated, but it's very reliable and gets the job done, if with some penalty in gas mileage. The rumored eight-speed is taking forever to appear, but it probably will eventually.

Finally a proper review of the CX50. I was getting an oil change for my CX5 Signature and jumped in the CX50. Immediately I noticed it wasn't up to the luxury level of the CX5. From my understanding, Mazda is coming out with a new CX5. The CX50 seems to be going for the the Subaru crowd and the CX5 goes for the Euro brands.

I had the chance to drive an early car, turbo model. I was in a CX5 at the time, non turbo. I loved the outside, the turbo motor is awesome and I loved almost all the things about it. A few shortcomings for me, but they're big in my opinion. The panoramic moonroof opens like 9 inches...total. That's just not going to be enough, I want all the air with a roof that big. Missing the 40/20/40 rear fold down seats is a huge miss for me as well. Last, they took away the nice storage features of the rear armrest. Not a big deal if you don't have kids, but I thought of instantly. This was going to replace my CX5 lease, however, I ended up in a Civic Si (and couldn't be happier).

I walked away feeling the same. It was impressive in some aspects, and underwhelming in others. It really does feel more like a city car rather than an off road capable suv. The Rav4 and CRV impressed me more for consistency and balance rather than the drastic changes between "exceptional" to "mediocre". Example, the leather seats are AWESOME but they are manual! in 2022! or the seat fold down was only 40/60, or the suspension was super stiff and uncomfortable.

In *most* ways I still prefer the apples to apples trim of the CX-5 versus the CX-50. Goose said it best when he said the inside matches the outside of this design. It’s probably still nicer than a non-fully loaded RAV-4 but the CX-5 is definitely full of nicer materials and fit&finish with a more comfortable ride too, IMO I work in sales for a Mazda dealership and have found the $34k 2.5 N/A engine Preferred Plus to be the sweet spot for many buyers - power seat, power lift gate, pano roof, and obligatory gloss black wheels.

I give you guys kudos for keeping a CX-7 turbo alive...as a previous Mazda service advisor, I can't tell you how many of them were killed by horrible owners that drove them into the ground. Really fun for what they were, when maintained well. Personally, I would recommend the order as CX-5, Venza, CX-50, if you ask me. CX-5 will be a nice upgrade from your CX-7, Venza would be an upgrade in a different way (just be mindful about a huge change in dynamics), and the CX-50 would basically be a current revision of your CX-7. Definitely drive them all and compare to see what you like most.

@@aprtur Yep, I agree with that order as well. CX-7 is still going strong at 110k miles. I do oil/filter changes every 4k miles. Probably needs a valve cleaning at this point, but no CE lights atm. Only major thing I'm worried about is the timing chain/tensioners. Honestly its not worth spending the money to have it done, so if it goes, it goes at this point.

I'd be very curious to know if the steering is like other models on this platform (2019+ M3 & CX-30), where the steering feels great on smooth roads and normal driving, but when you're cruising down a back road or pushing it a bit, the steering wheel tells you NOTHING about what the front tires are doing. This is particularly terrifying in the winter on slippery roads, as you don't feel the front end lose traction and you have no confidence in the car. This is something their older products, such as the CX3, CX5, CX9, last-gen M3, etc. did much much better. Saying this as a previous owner of a '19 M3S GT, '21 CX-30, and current owner of a '22 CX5.

Chiming in, here, since nobody replied. I have a CX-50 turbo, but I also wouldn’t mind driving an outback xt. XT is a little quicker than the CX-50, has a little more room for passengers and a lot more for cargo, and it has a little more supple ride. Despite being slightly slower, the CX-50 is more of a driver’s car with it’s sporty feeling, and it has more physical buttons for things, versus the Subaru where a lot of the buttons are in the touch screen. The CX-50 is a bit more rare and doesn’t have a mom-car stigma, and it stirred the emotions in my heart much more than the Outback. Can’t go wrong with either one, they’re both nice cars, but I preferred the Mazda. The terracotta interior feels exotic, and the car feels luxurious and worth the money. So in-short, it just comes down to preferences. Which do you value more: utility, or sport & style?

Only one quibble: There is a touch screen on the CX-50, but it's active for CarPlay/AA only. By default touch works only when stopped, but you can enable touch while in motion in the menu. I prefer the command knob setup but this should satisfy the "I can't touch it" people.

They "de-luxuried" the interior by removing soft touch but kept the piano gloss around the highest traffic part of the interior - the center console. Good choice Mazda!

Glad you brought up the heavy steering. If it's worse than our 2020 cx5 it'll be a deal breaker. Ours is constantly trying to go back to center like a wound up spring and during emergency turns its resistance is a problem. Heck even long drives it becomes a problem. There is also zero benefit to this heavy steering as it doesn't really provide more feedback. Mazda needs to tie the heavier steering to the sport mode and give a normal or comfort mode that is much easier to turn. Now I grew up driving manual steering cars, standards, even trucks and heavy equipment, so don't poke fun lol. But Mazda is faking sporty by making it overly heavy with no advantages to it. Other brands go too light but sure are easier to daily.

I just got a 2023 CX-5 Signature and one of the reasons was for the firmer steering. I had a 2021 XC40 Inscription that had three steering settings, and although I loved the firmness on-center of the firmest setting, in turns it was numb with no feedback and it felt the same no matter at what steering angle I was. I enjoy the progressive firmness I get from the CX-5's drive and its overall responsiveness is why I went back to Mazda from Volvo. (The Volvo was otherwise great though.) To loop back to this video, I chose the CX-5 over the CX-50 due to its more upscale interior appointments that Mark highlighted in his comments. I was looking for an upscale/premium vibe closer to the Volvo and farther away from the RAV4 that the CX-50 feels more akin to.

I test drove both and preferred the cx-50. It body rolls less than the cx-5 due to it being wider and shorter with a lower center of gravity. I like the heavier feel as the car doesn't go all over the place. It feels like a 1960s or 1970s car. So it's preference

Deja Vu. I guess that's a good thing? Going way back to the 80s Mazdas tended to have well designed interiors with some cheaper materials, and suspensions (and steering feel) that felt very good in normal driving but not great when pushed too hard. Of course they also lacked engine power and had some ponderous automatics (but good manuals). Even the forgotten 626s were pleasant to drive until really pushed. In the current market, it's to bad Mazda avoiding the whole ecoboost type of engine. A small turbo four would give the base engines more torque and feel less slow than the current NA 2.5. Though I suspect the 2.5 will last a long time while all the turbo engines have that added turbo wear to deal with- and at some point will be an expensive repair

Highway driving is very undemanding. Unless the suspension is rock-hard, most cars and SUVs will be fine. A sedan will usually be quieter as the cargo area can transmit noise. The tire noise of this might get bothersome on a long trip, but other than that it's mostly how the seats suit you and to some extent whether the mapping and other infotainment features work well.

Being based on the CX30 Turbo I am sure this is a fantastic vehicle. My wife has the CX30 Turbo and is in love with it and I think it is a blast to drive. The problem with the CX50 for me when considering it was that for 43k it just didn't compare to the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy which was only 1k more. The Santa Fe feels like a luxury vehicle and while the Mazda is quite Euro like in it's interior appointments it still needs to be a 5k cheaper than the Santa Fe to compete with it.

These Hyundai fan-boys are so boring with their bias. They compare cars based on the interior features (agree, better on the South Koreans, driven by the ex-German cars' engineers hired by the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis group) and powerful turbo engines (the same German approach of the same engineers that "helped" with the planned obsolescence) and not on the more important reliability and TCO characteristics. Where Mazda is far better, just as Toyota/Lexus 😉 But they will find out the truth the hard way when they will get far less money for a SK car vs. this Mazda after a few years (for a car that is today more expensive than this CX-50).

Nov 23 production change introduced retuned steering, suspension and brakes. Softened the steering a bit, softened the dampening a bit and added a bit more initial brake bite.

I think it's a nice car, and I love it's color options. The thing that bugs me is the piano black plastic. I have no idea why manufacturers seem to think this is a good material to use, especially right around high-traffic areas. It's not as bad as some other cars, but it's still annoying and will look scratched and damaged within a year. Not good if you plan on owning this for awhile

Just FYI for those watching. It does have touch screen but only in Android Auto or CarPlay. By default it only works when at a stop but you can enable touch screen at any speed in the settings under Connectivity.

Just picked up the 2024 CX-50 Premium. Very Pleased. It is solid and prefer the lower ride feeling. It has upgraded shocks and lighter steering compared to the 23' Model. Within 2 days, I found a coding bug. You can use the favorite button to add a radio station to favorites. Discovered you can add the same station multiple times. Ideally, should be limited to once. Also, instead of a delete a favorite screen action, it would be easier to hold down the favorite button to unfavorite a station, essentially a double click.

I agree with your comment on fake engine noise. If it isn't nice by itself, just keep in quiet. As for the CX-50, I'd get the Turbo if it where 36k. The blue color is pretty cool, and at least they use color and not just more variations of white and grey. This IS the top pick in its class, to my mind, as long as you get the Turbo. The base engine is awful and sluggish, way too underpowered for a car of this size.

I have a CX5 and CX50. My take is, the CX5 is more of a lux car in how it feels and drives while the CX50 is more rough and tumble. Not in performance but in appearance and feel. As a guy who likes sporty feeling cars I enjoy the 50 more. The 50 also is looks better. I will say that both CUVs NEED the turbo motor to perform comfortably in traffic. The torque you get from the Mazda Turbo 4 is way more valuable than the HP. Cons, the Meridian with the Apex package that includes the roof rack is loud on the interstate. If not needed consider taking it off for daily driving if you have one. I am very happy with both CUVs and would suggest both to buyers. It really depends on the "feel" they want to get out of their vehicle.

I test drove this car when they first got to dealers and and wanted to love it so much. But for $43k the powertrain feels so old. The 2.5T has plenty of power but dear lord that old 6 speed hold it back so much. Also you definitely notice the twist beam rear suspension. I think the CX-5 Signature is the better small suv.

The CX-5 is definitely a better value for most buyers. A driver wouldn't know it's a twist beam if it wasn't in the specs. I've driven the previous generation with multi-link and have owned two of the current generation with the beam. The difference won't sway a sale one way or the other to the average buyer. The transmission is reliable and works fine. Adding more gears adds considerable complexity and that will translate to higher cost down the road. It's all about priorities.

i like they are moving back to physical controls off of all electronic panel based stuff. Even if it the same electronics back end at least I can use the controls in the 4 months a year i'm wearing gloves abd don't have to worry about slowly refreshing screens in 10 degree f weather.

Mazda has always had physical controls, partly because their infotainment system is dated and very limited. I do think HVAC controls should be physical - they need to be adjusted frequently - but some of the less commonly used features would be fine on-screen.

I like most of it. Hate the screen, not even a knob thing but I hate how the dash is swallowing it and it's so small. I use maps a lot so a bigger screen is much better. Also wanna know if the rear seats are down, is there enough room for me to sleep in it? I can sleep in my Tucson, but not comfortably. Also hate the stitching look, reminds me of jeans from the early 80s.

They can sense predetonation based on the fuel being compressed and advance or retard the spark timing based on that. Most modern direct injection vehicles have this integrated already, saves the manufacturer from having to develop specific ECU programming for each region that they sell the vehicle in.
