Hi Andy, I'd like to start off by saying you sir are a true craftsman. Amazing attention to detail every step of the way with excellent content flow and video production. I have a tip to share if you find it useful. When roller painting a panel such as the one in the video or a house door for instance, I found that laying the paint on the entire surface quickly then a one time lay off works best. Thus I lay it on fast and don’t worry about it being 100% finished looking at this point, just get the bulk of it on there evenly and fast. Then I do the back roll one time, and one time only in one continuous pass from left to right then it is hands off stop. No touch-ups or spot rolling anything, just let dry or it will make it worse every time. Anytime I have ever rolled in sections or temporarily rolled opposite a leading wet edge I could always see the lap line afterwards using the light. My roller jobs now look like the paint was perfectly applied with a spray gun once I adopted this painting practice. Less coats, less sanding, less time, less work, hope that helps.

Hi Andy, happy fathers day. Small tip from Holland. This one was given by the owner of IJssel coat. Before using these rollers roll them between your hands to get all loose stuff out of them as this can ruin your paint job.
@kiddiescripterkiller
@kiddiescripterkiller 5 жыл бұрын
You need to roll off the edge of the roller on the side you are moving away from and you won't see the roller lines. If you want to go both directions, roll off both sides. Tip the roller at about a 15 degree angle and roll out the edge(s). So if you are painting from left to right, roll off the left side edge and vice versa... Learned this from painting 100's of house interiors so you only roll it once and don't have to feather the roller or play around with it to get rid of the lines.

I think the can says you can apply up to 3mils max at a time yes the primer is very thin but sets up to tack very fast and I normaly recoat in like 30 to 45 min up to the desired mills. I let it stand for full cure after that and I have not had any issues. Good video

I used Alexseal on Luana. Their high build sands like no primer I've ever used. It's hard but sands like butter and didn't load up my sand paper. I did like 4-6 base coats and 3 mixed clear and 3 clear... I over did it and am not a great painter, but everyone thinks my 78 Catalina is a brand new boat. 5 years and still looks beautiful.

This past winter, I decided to refinish my boat using Alexseal. The boat had Imron paint on it that was ready to be redone. I am using Alexseal's entire system and have already used their fairing, high build and finish primer. I have been incredibly impressed with these products, basing this on many years of painting boats including using Interlux Perfection (Interthane Plus) over the last 20+ years. I am going to roll on the Alexseal topcoats. I actually tested the products on my dinghy over the winter and could not believe that the stuff actually set up and dried in 40 degree temps in January. Anyway, I was hoping you'd be one step ahead of me this spring so I could learn from your experience, but I will be applying the topcoats this week. I look forward to all of your videos and have learned a ton. Bob N.

Had never sprayed before, but needed to do a set of Mercury outboard cowlings ... Used Alexseal, and was very happy with the results.. and 18 months later, with minimal care, it still looks good... Their tech support is also very good (will talk to us mortals, and not just yacht applicators)... My one comment with regard to application, would be that their tech sheet says you can overcoat the primer 2hrs later at 68 degrees, and one 1hr at 77 degrees - I know in my case I was in the high 70's / low 80's and was able to put on 2-3 coats of primer (to cover the black) in a 4hr timespan.

I'm not sure what help I can be as not an expert but nobody has answered you so I'll give it a go. Years ago me and my friends painted cars from time to time and after any kind of sanding or if the work piece has been sitting you need to clean the panel to a very high standard before you can apply more paint. For cars we would buy, I think it was polishing rag that came on a roll, add a little bit of thinners or something called panel wipe which is basically a solvent cleaner and even if the surface looked clean we would clean it again. I have never actually used them but I think tac rags just are a modern pretreated, disposable equivalent? Cleanliness really is next to godlessness with paint and you can never be too clean. I've seen plenty of people spaying cars only to see perfect fingerprints show through the wet paint because someone had touched a panel after it had been wiped and the oils on their skin caused the paint to react. As I said I'm no expert but I hope I helped a little or maybe this will prompt someone who knows more than me to give a better answer? :-)
@WakeforMe
@WakeforMe 4 жыл бұрын
A tack rag is a purpose bought product. It is a piece of loosely woven material with a sticky substance on it. As you wipe the panel any sanding dust, dust, or sundry bits will stick to the cloth. The tack cloth doesn't leave any residue on the surface. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tack_cloth

What are your thoughts on Interlux perfection? Their tech literature says the light colors can be rolled only without tipping for a smooth finish. I did exactly that on the last video I posted and the perfection settled out to a smooth mirror like finish on most of the hull. The areas that didn't were more likely than not my fault for not having sanded the barrier coat smooth enough. Thoughts?

Hi Andy, Why would it be a good idea to go up to 25% reducer in a breeze? Heck, I’m wondering after watching this video why use the reducer at all, it looks pretty “watery” without it and it seems more prone to burning through with the sander. OK, so that’s two questions.. :)

So alexseal doesnt recommend using an epoxy sealer primer as a last step before painting? I usually shoot transtar 2k epoxy primer sealer and then shoot imron in a wet on wet application. Obviously u cant do wet on wet with roll and tip but I would have thought they still would have wanted a primer/ sealer before the paint? Great video though

I took my boat to Puerto Vallarta Mexico and left it in the water for 5 months. When i hauled it out of the water i was horrified. Muscles all over the below water line. Lower leg leaking oil. To get the muscles off i have had to use a steel chisel and hammer which damages the gel coat. I will have to repair the gel coat with liquid steel or gel coat then paint. We are now building stands to put the boat in the air for further clean up and repair. I am thinking of using gel coat to fill in scrapes and gouges then painting. 2855 Bayliner cira sunbridge will be sitting on center stands 2 feet in the air for sanding and painting. I plan on using anti fouling paint in case i tale it down to Mexico again. The water was so toxic it ate off most of the bottom paint along with the zinks. I am looking for guidance going forward with this project. (paint brands, primer etc) Thanks in advnce)

Decks were painted several years ago. After comparisons, I want to try Alexseal roll and tip. About two quarts of primer and two of top coat should be more than enough. 'Fish eyes' happen when there is either grease (any kind) or silicone on the surface you're painting. It results in a small spot where the paint won't stick and kind of leaves a ridge around the edge looking literally like a fish eye.

Just wondering, can alexseal be used straight on to gel coat, or does the gel coat need to be sanded back to a thin layer?? I'm going to paint a whole hull

Exactly the question I have, have you done this? What were the results?

@boatworkstoday I was wondering if I could use Alwgrip primer then use the alexseal topcoat for my fiberglass boat. The previous paint has been removed and I am ready to paint. Thanks

Yes you can! But if you're starting over anyway I'd take a look at Alexseal 442 :-)
