Thanks for another extremely informative, instructive video. I am just finishing up refinishing my boat with Alexseal and believe it is the best family of products of this nature on the market. I painted the hull in Sky blue with Arista blue for a boot stripe. The glossy finish is unbelievable and just rolling the paint on worked out very well. One thing that I have done in the past with Interlux Perfection and it seems to work as well with the Alexseal is that if I mix up too much, I can store the leftover paint in the refrigerator for several days and it still works fine. Never ran into any issues doing this and with the super high cost of these paints it saves on what would have been thrown away money. I have also had very good luck with the Totalboat fairing that you recommended and am going to try their buffing compound. Always look forward every Sunday to your new video.

Ao1968 Andy also has some expensive tools, Festool is not cheap, though if you watch AvE’s channel he takes apart a Festool saw and it is very disappointing that they use bushings instead of bearings, and low temp melt, cheap plastic instead of high temp melt, high quality plastic.

Hi Andy, I am a professional detailer here in Europe. You should try FG400 from Menzerna. It is a Buffing compound, easily removes P1000/1500 from Gelcoat. But the best thing is you don't have to polish after even od dark colors. No fillers, no Silicone. What you see is what you have, no masking effect. Even forget wool pads, hard foam is more than enough or even softer. You can use super finish pads with the same compound if you just need to do a finish job. And finally no dust at all. And if you have some money to spend you should look for Rupes iBrid nano 1 inch or 2 inc orbital movement, rotary movement, polishing, sanding, cleaning machine. P.S. nice work. You are an inspiration. Because of you, I started to do small GC repairs too. Thanks

Well done! As an old Alcraft user I can appreciate the labor involved with a blend. Alexseal looks very interesting. I'm redoing a Sturdee Skiff transom and raising it to longshaft height for my next project. Since it will be a complete refinish I've decided to go with the Alexseal. I'm in Rhode Island so Jamestown Dist. has been my go to source for over 30 years. They are the best source for marine repair products, both glass and wood, I have ever found. I don't even look around anymore. They always get my first call. Your introduction of Alexseal has been excellent and honest. Great channel here. I recomend it often.

Hi, Are there pigments available for base white paint similar to colour matching for gelcoats ? I have come across a boat (Jeanneau Prestige 38s) that needs repairs to the hull side but the gelcoat surface has weathered so much to a "white" similar to a paint finish, and blending the gel repairs in reveals the under colour which is a strong yellow. I am looking at a spray repair but as you know the weathered off whites are all so different and I need to know if pigment colour matching is possible and available. Many thanks John (UK)

Hey there - seeing how you use that double action airbrush you'd probably do just as well if not better with a single action. Not much point in going double action if all you're gonna do is pull the button back to full open on every pass. Also, pro-tip for any viewers here planning on getting an airbrush is to get a small sized airbrush hose, and adapt it to your main air hose. SOOOOOOOOO much easier than spraying with that full weight hose and quick connect attached.

Look up, (Airbrush Air Horse Quick Connecter) on eBay, and get a thinner air hose it will make it much more pleasant to use. I have an Iwata eclipse side cup and love it for Art. For general use, I don't think you'd notice much difference. But for very fine lines and nice out spray more money makes a dif. Also when changing needles you also change the nozzle size. and you can also polish the needle for detail. again not necessary for big jobs like this. I also use a cheapo brush for staining and small jobs like this. even cheaper than the one you got.

Primer aids adhesion plus (I don’t know his exact purpose) it indicates when you’ve sanded to the ‘original’ paint surface.

Being so hard, do you think it would work on a timber boat or just crack? Not sure a painted surface microns thin has the same mechanical properties as a mm thick gel coat. Hard = cracking at that thickness if there is any displacement in the surface. One property of paint is cosmetic and the other is way more than that...though I know you know that. Good videos btw. Not having a go at you but just want to bring in other factors than are relevant to anyone who owns a boat that is continually flexing (working)

Very little. From what I saw it is a bit more technical to apply (and it's a spray only application I believe). Also it's quite a bit more expensive by the time you figure in the paint and clearcoat. Probably best over smaller highlight areas rather than an entire hull IMO :-)

It amazes me that Alexseal is being praised so highly for being able to roll, spray, touch-up and buff it. Are other marine paints not able to do this? I'm old school and do a lot of automotive work still with oil based enamels. I have also used these same enamels on marine applications with success. Even the cheapest Walmart Rustoleum you can find will roll, spray, touch-up and buff just fine. They just don't hold up to UV for long. If you are bothering with color sanding (cut and buffing), you can lay it down with a aerosol can and it will come out awesome. So I am not surprised by the airbrush results. Is Alexseal, by chance, enamel?
@fishhuntadventure4 жыл бұрын
enamel sorta just means ‘shiny’ but I think you are equating the term with “oil based” aka linseed oil which isn’t necessarily linseed oil or “varnish” based. I haven’t looked it up but I imagine it’s a type of polyurethane marine paint which coalesces and “air cures” in addition to actual ‘drying’ by solvent evaporation. Most boat paints are two-part cure either by base paint + activator components to cure (different than drying) or base paint plus air(oxygen) to cure. Look up the spec sheet and SDS on their site and it will tell you what it is.
