We use a harbor frieght airless sprayer for our non-skid. Roll paint, shoot nonskid (about a foot short of your wet edge), roll the next section, shoot nonskid, etc. Finish with rolling a coat or two of paint. We find that it leaves a beautiful, even pattern. We haven't done it with Alex Seal, but with Awlgrip/Awlcraft.

I remember in the seventies in the Navy we mixed the sand into the epoxy paint then rolled it onto the surface. We were applying it in 5 gallon batches there, instead of pints or quarts. This seems more practical for small batches. Have a good one.

I just finished my own boat last week, full paint and nonskid. i ended up using rustoleum from the local big box (this was before your alexseal video) and finished with a cream kiwigrip. the softsand is what i wish i used but perhaps not for a reason youd suspect... you can easily apply it with one person. kiwigrip kind of requires two people because you have to pull the masking tape immediately after rolling or it will peel. for various reasons i had to apply the kiwigrip while leaning over the boat on a ladder, in my front yard, in hawaii... so its 90 deg out. suffice to say the edging is less than perfect. now i have to figure out a way to blend in a nonskid recoat in a few spots (its not that bad).

I realize I'm really, really late to this party but if you get a pair of your wife's old panty hose and stuff it up the vacuum you can recover all of the non-skid you suck up in the vacuum. Heck. you probably can just use the vacuum and not bother with the brushing. Just a technique I've used over the years in similar situations. Keep the good stuff coming.

I like the way this non skid turned out. I'm not sure how to prep a surface with a texture already built in from the factory. I want to paint my deck but wondering if I paint over the old non skid surface, will it reduce the effectiveness of the original and does it make any sense to add SoftSand on top of the old non skid pattern? I have typical Catalina brand diamond shape texture.
@susanc.8009 Жыл бұрын
You could put that in a gallon zip lock with lots of appropriate size holes and shake it above a just painted area with the wind at your back so as to not have it land on the deck before you paint the next area. That would be thriftier with the nonskid. The next day you hose off the extra, let dry, avoid walking on it and give it a second coat, then a third.
@paulkube39015 жыл бұрын
A couple questions, if you don't mind? First "bonding" coat ; what thickness? Somewhere between the thin, dry roller first paint coat and "flood" coat later over soft-sand? What is the finished thickness of the non-skid surface above the regular painted surface? As always; great presentation and appreciated information!

Love the vlog. Keep up the great work. When laying out tape boundaries to break up the nonskid and provide a more professional look on a larger surface...do you have to re-tape after every every coat or can you pull the tape after the first coat is 12 - 24 hours dry, sweep up the excess soft sand and then paint the two sealing top coats over the whole deck including where the tape used to be? What gives the most professional look and finish?

I'm in the process of finishing the floor in my boat using Totalboat topside single stage polyurethane and soft sand nonskid. POINTERS: Put down a coat of paint thinned 10% with totalboat thinner using a foam roller. Make sure the thickness is uniform by rolling in both directions and leave no thick paint ridges from the edge of the roller. Uneven paint results in uneven amounts of sand adhesion. Sprinkle the sand on THICK so no paint shows through. Let it dry and use a soft bristle hand broom and swap away the excess. This will result in a very even texture, IF your paint was laid down even. The only down side is that you need to buy extra sand. I used a whole quart of soft sand for an area about 4 ft by 10 ft and then swept up 3/4 of the quart to use on the on the half of the floor. Next apply another 1 or 2 coats over the sand to seal it in. Also do NOT paint any smooth surfaces when apply in the first coat over the sand. No matter how well you sweep or vacuum the sand, the roller will pick up some sand and deposit it on the smooth surface.

Hi Andy! Great channel. I would like to non-skid in a contrasting color with 'teak lines'. The base coat would be off-white. The teak-colored 'planks' would be in tan with soft sand non-skid. My question is how to mask off the base off-white. I could certainly mask off with tape thin strips (to eventually leave the off-white in-between strips.) BUT, after covering over these painters tape mask strips with one finish 'teak' colored paint layer, soft sand, and one sealer 'teak' paint layer, would I be able to pull up the mask strips underneath (to reveal the off-white undercoat?) I'm concerned the mask would get locked in. What do you think?

@todddunn9455 жыл бұрын
Looks great Andy. As usual a couple of questions. 1) Does the soft sand tend to blow around easily? I ask because I don't have a "breeze" free place to do the application. I am not talking an outside windy place, just a boat shed with some minor air movement when people leave doors open, etc. 2) This has nothing to do with using Alexseal or soft sand, but have you tried KiwiGrip?

If one was starting from scratch, would you recommend a layer of primer AND a coat of paint, THEN the soft sand? Or do you think one could lay the primer down and immediately start on the sand - saving that first coat of paint, then ending two coats of paint. Essentially, I’m asking if you think you could lay the sand over primer, skipping one coat of paint. Btw, you’re an absolute legend sir, I’ve been in the trades for 20 years and I don’t say this very often, I’m extremely picky and critical, but I would stand behind your work. It’s hard to find quality work anymore, thank you.
@susanc.8009 Жыл бұрын
May I? Paint wearing off the grit would come off the tippy top. As the paint wears from walking on it, the valleys retain the paint and the tops lose it. Any slight salt and pepper look is not unsightly. So, I guess it probably doesn’t matter. The grit can hide defects, so , if you spot prime any repairs and the gel coat is in good shape, you can start with the top coat.

I love your video’s very informative especially this on about a non skid surface. I want to ask a question though. I own a 30’ class A motorhome and it has a fiberglass roof on it. Do you believe that this same processes could be done to refresh my top plus make it a bit non slip for safety reasons when I have to go up and do service like using a dicore leveling on top of vents and covering screws etc to waterproof attachment points as I could fiberglass everything but would be terrible for a replacement if needed in the future. Thanks for all the great classes for boats as well as I do have one of those as well but is in excellent shape at the moment.

If you take the surface area you plan to cover and compare that to the 24"x24" panel he prepped and it should be easy to calculate. Looking at the soft sand site, they align a pint of medium to a gallon of paint if that helps.
