The Rubber Griptape Experience

Here is my review of Dkl and No Rip Grip. Both are new rubber griptape brands within skateboarding and I think they are good options for making your shoes last longer.

I was a poor kid,and one time I got a brand new deck with my Christmas money,but had no money for grip tape,so I took o bike innertube and cut it up in straps and glued to my board for grip,lol this is cool! Cheers!

Thanks! I appreciate that. I find that all the other videos didn’t do a good deep dive in the actual day to day use of this grip. It seems like they just try for a bit and then switch back to regular grip.

The peeling really has two causes. 1. it is best to allow it to cure 24hours before skating. 2. You _really_ need to cut it deep when it comes to the edges and sand it down properly. I have had (the same) DKL grip on two of my boards for over 2 years now and it does not peel off. I don't think you can do those cut away designs with this without coming loose.

if you have 2 boards each lasting over a year then you are probably not doing tricks that would harm your griptape...

@@durawya Or one of them is a cruiser and the other is a freestyle board, both getting used a lot. Regular wear on DKL does occur with it losing some grip over time, but the grip itself lasts a long time for sure. It doesn't shred to bits in normal tricks and I've done like tens of thousands of at least trick attempts on them. Skill level doesn't mean shit when you do use it.

@@PHeMoX you should replace a tape every 10 hours of use, regardless of what type of board, and that's pushing it. I replace mine weekly and have never had a problem slapping the grip on and then instantly skating it 🤦‍♂️ you do NOT need to wait 24 hours... 🤡

Thanks for this video! Wish I watched it before I got the no rip grip diamond pattern. I haven’t put it on my board yet but it feels like slick plastic instead of a gripping surface. I don’t think I’m going to use it! I found that DKL grip tape wore down in the pockets of my nose and tail after a month or so. It got really dangerous for transition skating! I put sandpaper grip over just those spots and got the grip back, but I wish DKL’s rubber pips didn’t wear down so quickly. For my next board, I may put sandpaper grip tape in those spots and DKL everywhere else, or at least put DKL in the areas I grab my board.

Very interesting experience. I think the first version of DKL did wear out for me but not to the point of my slipping off. I think their latest version is the best one so far( despite the peeling)

Hey man, solid video. Definitely a lot more in depth than I was expecting for rubber griptape. I do have an unrelated question though. What shoes are those? They look like they have a much bigger toebox than most shoes or skate shoes, and I've been looking for shoes that have a larger toebox but are also solid for skating.

The shoes are the Reebok CrossFit Lite TR (the longest name in shoe history I swear 😒) I’ve done some videos talking about them. The other pair is the Birkenstock arran model. A great shoe that I found at a discount store for $50 at the time. Surprisingly a great shoe for skating. If you want a shoe with an actual wide toe box consider getting the Lems Chukka model. Ives tried it on myself and my toes actually felt free. Here are some links to find a pairs. I have to say I've also been thinking I should just get in contact with some manufacturer and start making skate shoes with a wide toe box too 😆, seeing as its a definite gap in the market right now. And personally it just sucks to switch from my typical flip flops to such tight shoes when I skate, so I'll definitely have to check out some of these recommendations. Unfortunately from what I've tried of rubber griptape I'm not the biggest fan of it for my own setup, so when looking for wide toebox shoes I've also had to be pretty aware of how durable they are, since most are barefoot style shoes that would rip in like two seconds 😅 But anyways, thanks for the info! And lmk when you start making those custom manufactured wide toebox shoes 😆✌️

It feels soft compared to reg grip, the worst is how dusty it gets if ur riding street I wouldn’t get it as u would prolly need to wipe it a few times during the sesh. The peeling also irritates me so much

All these gimmicks just make skating harder. Go back to a real setup and you'll be like "OMG why did i waste all that time!?" I messed around with all sorts of gimmicks. But always went back to a traditional skateboard setup. Theres a reason pros use that stuff when their bodies and paychecks are on the line.

Fair point. I think that pros have a good supply on product so they are able to consistently get better with quality equipment. If you were able to skate a new board and shoe every 2 weeks you would probably have higher chances of getting more consistent and knowing how well your skating is. For most kids growing up you struggle learning with your board as it lose quality over time, sure you can still skate but it becomes at some point you need to replace it. I’ve toyed with the idea of going to a “regular” setup but for after experiencing rubber griptape there’s no point of spending of destroying my shoes faster just to replace them. I’d rather have shoes last me as long as my board so I understand how my feet function over time. I might change my trucks though. I’ve been realizing suspension trucks are more useful for cruising and riding then actually doing tricks😅 thats where I’ve got figure out what trucks that will work for me and my skating style.
