Can you use these indoors?
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesritter6640 Yes, this is the language from Flame King on that: "This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder and for indoor use in commercial enclosures, having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as construction trailers or temporary work enclosures."

Hi Alex, great review. Thank you for your attention to detail. I think it important to clarify the "indoor use" qualification. That is a question that seems to come up a lot. These heaters are tested and rated to the same standards as the Buddy heaters. If you look at the Buddy Heater manual it states: "This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder." So I agree that the term "indoor" needs to be qualified for both heaters. But it should be noted, that where ever a Mr Buddy Heater can be used, a Flame King one may be used as well. Thank you for the review and support!

The quick connect port on these heaters is for hooking up to a regulated gas source. Propane appliances run on very low pressure, and are always regulated from a direct tank source. Propane tanks have 100-300 PSI pressure, and appliances run on less than 1 PSI (11 inches water column). In an RV you can connect direct to it's internal gas system, as it's already regulated.

Great review thanks! The flame king [ now BLUU ] is unique that it has a thermostat and goes on and off that is a huge advantage especially if you leave or doze off it's not wasting fuel running and running getting too hot it will shut itself off as needed. Very cool.

Interesting, it looks like BLUU is another third party offering the same heaters (both flame king and bluu are manufactured from Martin Industries - yes, they have a yellow version). Unless BLUU acquired Flame King? Yeah the thermostat is nice when used inside a hard sided insulated building. A lot of my viewers use these heaters ice fishing and unfortunately the thermostat isn't super effective in that environment

Great comparison. I just discovered the flame king yesterday. I already own 2 buddy heaters. The big buddy and the smaller one but when I saw the flame king and read about the thermostat I was wondering if it turned on and off itself. I was really considering getting a flame king just for that reason because I'm not one to fidget with the temp. It's either on or off so a thermostat is a huge bonus. I mainly want the thermostat tho for ice fishing because I've been wanting to do overnights in my flip over hut but now am worried how well the thermostat will work. I don't want to be waking up sweating or freezing. Would love a review of how well the thermostat actually works for similar purposes such as use in a portable ice hut before I justify spending another couple hundred bucks on more fishing gear lol. Thanks again for the comparison

The 20 pound to 1 pound connection hoses will need a filter, as the stock rubber hoses will emit contaminates that will eventually clog these heaters. Mr. Heater makes special hoses that do not contaminate, so don't need filters. Flame King does not list any filters, but you could use Mr. Heater ones.

Hi Alex, Three things that need clarification: FIRST, the Big Buddy heat control is NOT three settings, It can be adjusted between the levels by simply turning the knob up or down. It is NOT thermostatically controlled, thankfully! The more bells & whistles, the more problems when you need it the most! SECOND is the fans, totally worthless in my opinion, and especially using D cell batteries that are heavy and expensive. I use heat powered wood stove fans on both of my Big Buddies and they work great. You have to modify the base to fit on the top of the grate, and I built a small hook that holds the fan to the handle. I use two different fans and both were easily adapted. Just a note that the tip over switch is also a shut off if the stove receives a sharp blow like accidentally kicking the table or stand it sits on. THIRD is the pilot. You mentioned that some of the stoves hide it to keep it out of the wind. If you are using it in that much wind, it isn't going to heat the area anyway, and it makes it hard to clean. After a couple of years, the orifice gets some carbon build up and the flame is degraded. I use a stainless steel tooth brush to clean it. I don't know how much propane the Flame King uses, probably about the same as the Big Buddy, except when the thermostat turns it on overnight and tries to keep it at a set temperature. I use one of my Big Buddy stoves to heat my shop. I turn the Low setting down until I can hear the flame flicker, then I turn it back up until it stops flickering. A thermostat would try to hold the room temperature the same all of the time, and would waste a lot of propane overnight so you would have to turn it off and restart it daily. With mine on low, and regardless of the room temperature it uses the minimum amount of propane day and night and keeps my shop comfortable all of the time. I burn 9 gallons every 7 days running it 24/7 as low as I can set it. I never change it day or night, even when it is below zero. My shop is insulated and is a small shop. Nothing has ever frozen inside during the past 7 or 8 years and the temperature has dipped below zero many times. I monitor the temperature from inside my house. I use filters and I change them every year and I have never had a problem. I believe my hoses are Big Buddy hose, but I am not sure, I bought them 7 or 8 years ago before the notice came out regarding the hoses degrading and plugging up the heaters. I have two heaters because I don't want to be without a working heater, but so far I have never had to use the second heater in my shop. I use it for other things like my dog pen when it is below zero, but both work flawlessly.

Absolutely fantastic product review! Hope this video goes viral - your local news station should consider you for their Consumer product reviews - you're very articulate and your observations are thorough and interesting. I am not the outdoor type, but I am considering purchasing a few portable heaters for bedrooms in case of winter power outages. I have seen where there are heat sensitive fans that can be placed on the Mr. Heater Buddy Heaters to assist in throwing off heat. Could they be used for the Flame King Portable (especially given its design) or does the built in fan produce sufficient heat dispersion?
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 3 жыл бұрын
Richard, thank you for your kind words 😀(I hope it goes viral too!) What state do you live in? There were a ton of power outages last winter that caused a huge buying demand on these type of heaters to a point where they were sold out everywhere. So now is definitely a great time to look for one or a couple and picking them up. Yes, the heat sensitive fans will work with the flame king portable heaters too! The built in fan seems to only push the heat out a few inches, whereas those bigger fans that you add on would move it several feet out in front of the heater as they are much larger and stronger. Good luck finding the one(s) you want, I'd love to know what you end up with! 👍

Just seeing this comment now a year later, but I'm curious what kind of space your heating with your portable buddy during that last freeze? I'm trying to figure out if the portable buddy will be enough for my 900sqft apartment, I figured if it gets too cold we'll just live in the bedroom if the power goes out, maybe it will be enough for that. I saw some chatter about it going to freeze over Christmas here in Austin, so I bought the portable buddy today at Walmart for $74. as a just in case the power goes out. I couldn't find the Flex or Big Buddy anywhere I looked today, Home Depot, Walmart, Costco, and Bass Pro Shop. I was going to buy the Flex and the cooking unit, but nobody had them, so I bought the Ozark Trail 2-burner propane stover for $34 at Walmart also, and 6 1lb cannisters. I assume that should be enough for a week of use if needed. Any longer than that, and we'll fly out somewhere warm - if we can.

@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 2 жыл бұрын
I'll be doing a 1 year review video, my primary intended use of the unit was to use for ice fishing, and unfortunately the way the unit is designed the thermostat struggles in that environment to work properly (not nearly as big of an issue when in a fully insulated hard sided structure). For me the bigger concern is that when the thermostat does decide to tell the heater to turn off, it is not like a switch is flipped and the propane drops off down to the ignition light, instead it slowly starves the heater for propane so the ceramic pad goes out and not all the propane is being used up causing fluttering and un-burned propane to enter the room for anywhere between 10 seconds to a couple of minutes. Flame King has sad with the proper ventilation it isn't an issue, but they identify it is something they will be working to fix in their next version. Personally I would wait to get it until that next version comes out and can be tested, for now go with the buddy heater 👍

I ended up getting 2 buddies, each with 1 place for the canister. Haven't had to use them yet. But this year I'm thinking of putting the cylinder in to have them ready in case the power goes out because I know if the power goes out when it's cold I'll be too nervous to do it for the first time. How long can the canister stay in the mr buddy heater if it's not used? And could I keep it in the house with canister in? Thanks so much! Glad this video popped up again.
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, good idea to have the canister ready. I keep 1lb tanks in them year round and never had an issue. I suppose if it isn't screwed all the way on there could be a tiny slow leak possible around the threads, but I don't think that would happen (propane they put an additive in to make it smell, so if you smell rotten eggs type of smell you know you likely have a slow leak somewhere. But again, I've never had this issue). Yes you can keep it in the house with the canister in, with the 1lb tanks they are perfectly safe to use indoors with proper cross-ventilation. To get more comfortable with using them (they really are easy to use and not intimidating at all once you use them!), I would on a chilly day just start it up and put next to you when working outside, in the garage or something like that to get a feel for the knobs, how hot it gets, etc. (know that if outside the wind will take away a lot of the heat of course haha). Good luck and smart to be prepared!

The Mr Heaters say they are safe indoors and I have used them for a few years with no issues (no CO alarms going off). Are these rated the same or are they outdoor only. And yes, of course one should always have adequate ventilation but even then some are not rated for indoor use.
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 3 жыл бұрын
GREAT question! Yes, these are rated for indoor use according to Flame King. I actually asked them over a month ago before I even considered picking them up and doing a review because if they weren't I wasn't going to even get them. I did notice some language online, on the box and in the manual that was a bit controversial at first, but now a lot of that looks to have been updated to include "indoor" - which by the way it is designed should be the same as a buddy heater.

@@channeljedavisjr Weird, I show on the link it says Indoor and Outdoor: amzn.to/3FLE6d6 I know when they first released the flame king heaters they had some old language from who they white labeled from that they needed to update, so maybe they are just slowly getting around to it? They also have this disclaimer now: "NOTE: This heater is safe for indoor use in small recreational enclosures having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as enclosed porches, cabins, fishing huts, trailers, tent trailers, tents, truck caps and vans. It may be used for emergency indoor heating when connected to a disposable 1 lb. propane cylinder and for indoor use in commercial enclosures, having means for providing combustion air and ventilation, such as construction trailers or temporary work enclosures."
@flamekingco
@flamekingco 3 жыл бұрын
@@channeljedavisjr I think it important to clarify the "indoor use" qualification. Thank you for the support!

I used a portable buddy heater to heat my RV, and they have one problem. After about six months of daily use the lines inside the heater become plugged with oil from the propane, you then have to take the heater a part and clean the lines and the thermostat valve, and then the heater works again. I'm betting this new heater (the green one) will have the same problem after many months of use.

He says to always use solid non moving connections like the flame king🎉. The flame King should be safer for many years. I have not used a flame king yet, as I have two buddy heaters and have not had trouble with the two bigger ones but have returned one of the smallest round buddy heater and junked a second small buddy heater that sits on top of the tank.

Interesting, I've not had any issues with those connections and in fact feel it to be better as the ones that don't move like the Flame King I feel like if I try screwing it in and put a bit too much sideways pressure I'm going to break the connection off

Question I bought one of the big buddy heaters but mine is like forest green and it also has a heater on it what I'm thinking and finding now is I'm scared to use it around my oil and also my kerosene lamps that I've got plus I've got a 1950 and antique kerosene heater that works fine plus I bought the big new kerosene heater but I'm going to use the 20 lb propane tank with my big buddy propane heater if I don't have that on there the right way where it showed that I can know it was so test it with soapy water making sure it doesn't leak but what says that if it leaks and I've got Open flame which I smoke plus my lamps in my kerosene heater that a doesn't go kaboom so I'm starting to think I made a big mistake buying that propane heater which also where I get my propane she says do not put one of those propane heaters in the house with one of those big tanks now I'm scared

@@xrayron1 Maybe look at getting the small flame king with the thermostat so it can help regulate the heat - might be worth it

The only thing that I dislike about both heaters is not making a usb Option so it can use a power bank, I fixed my mr heater to use one though.

If you are in a tent on the ice, I don't think the thermostat would cycle unless it's well insulated . Maybe in an insulated shack it would work well.

Yeah, I think the big issue would be if you set the heater on the ice / snow. I'm going to try it this winter on a foam square or on a bucket and see if it works. I will also try it on an insulated floor where I am sure it will work out well.

I don't see where the Flame King has an Oxygen depletion sensor. Am I missing it?
@AlexTimm
@AlexTimm 3 жыл бұрын
On the box and online it says "Built in Safety Fuel Shutoff" - but in the manual it gets a lot more specific about it being an oxygen depletion sensor. I will try and track down the manual and put it in here.
@AlexTimm

Alan Wuertenberg, Here you go, the language from the manual: "This heater consumes oxygen in the combustion process. Each heater requires a minimum opening of 20 square inch (129 sq. cm) of fresh air venting for a safe and proper combustion. Example minimum 4" x 5". For your safety, this heater features an Oxygen Depletion System (ODS), which is a low oxygen level sensor that shuts off the gas supply to the heater avoiding accumulation of toxic carbon monoxide in the environment. * The ODS system DOES NOT detect presence of carbon monoxide. It detects low levels of oxygen available in the combustion process. Low oxygen level in combustion produces carbon monoxide, a toxic and odorless gas. If the ODS has shut heater off, provide fresh air venting in the area before relighting. If unit keeps shutting off, even when in vertical operating position, have it verified."
