I mean, they probably know how hype Sonic 3's return is, so I don't see them using the prototype music. That's just a reflection of how I think, though. If I was calling the shots there, then using the proto songs would just feel like a massive cut corner.

I feel it depends on the palette. The prototype has a pink sky and groggy green Death Egg, signifying it's morning, with the music sounding similar to a wake up call for soldiers. The final game uses a bright blue sky with a brighter brownish color for the Death Egg. The music and the palette in this case help create the mood of the sun beating down on you and the rest of the level.

I disagree, when I was in elementary school and playing this stage this music helped me feel the intensity and artificial nature of the stage. The "go" pushes you along to destroy the egg. But I also don't play music and am filled with nostalgia prolly.

Qjimbo, you are the reason why Sonic Origins are using the prototype tracks. If it wasn’t for your breakthrough discovery about MJ’s connection with Sonic 3, we would be having the MJ tracks in Sonic 3 in Origins today. So it’s all your fault.

@greenswag7763
@greenswag7763 Жыл бұрын
@@jackscalfani555 Actually, it's not Qjimbo, nor the fans' fault, but Sega who didn't paid MJ's team properly. Cirocco clearly stated this to a Sonic retro member back in 2012: "I believe that there is a lawsuit going on or about to go on. Sega owes a lot of people money from the Sonic stuff. Speak with Bobby Brooks. He may tell you a LOT more about everything....." Bobby never answered anyone who contacted him about Sonic stuff, until this moment: "what do u want? from me ? why do u want to know? you can contact my lawyer first off I don't know who u are or what you really want you don't have anything to do with my personal biz so why would I just give info to a stranger while *im in the middle of some legal shit .* tis is my personal biz so if you don't mind quit asking me about my biz" The most likely reason for this *(speculation, but it does makes sense),* is that Sega executives at japan were tired of paying royalties to Masato Nakamura, literally the reason why they resorted to their in-house team for compositions. Since royalties *are not obligated by law and depends on the contract,* Jackson probably signed a contract without thinking much (the false allegations and everything at the time), for which Sega could use these tracks, but only on sonic 3, and not have to pay royalties. Why japanese executives and not the Sega of america ones? Tom Kalinske said "If Jackson was involved or not, it's none of my knowledge." Considering Jackson was not credited, it's difficult to know if his estate is involved into this or not, but it seems the contract expired when he sadly passed away. Jackson died in June 2009, sonic 3 had *three more rereleases after this, with the songs intact.* Sonic PC Collection, a compilation that bundles various sonic games released exclusively in PAL territories in 2009, Sonic Classic Collection on the Nintendo DS in 2010, and finally, for Steam in 2011. Jackson's team could finally sue sega, demanding the money they always owed them for. Sadly, Sega choose the cheapest way, and that's why I'm not buying Sonic Origins, or any future rereleases if they don't get the MJ team's tracks on it again.

I see a slight mistake there, the "Go"! sample comes from a cd in the early 90s called "Zero-G Datafile 1", that sample cd was also used for Sonic CD but mostly for the second release of the cd called "Datafile 2", coming back to the topic, the sample was recorded and pitched up 9 semitones to fit in the hardware limitations (the higher the sample is pitched up, the shorter it is).

@AlexYardZone
@AlexYardZone 3 жыл бұрын
Well, a data sheet isn't a source in itself, and it's hard to reconcile that with the multiple search results that indicate Run DMC's Peter Piper. I'm not super familiar with the industry of sample CDs, but could it be possible that the clip was taken from the song itself and put on that sample CD? PS This isn't meant to be defensive, I do appreciate people pointing out things like this!
@MasteredRealm
@MasteredRealm 3 жыл бұрын
Not a mistake at all. The ZeroG compiler took samples from a multitude of sources. The Go sample featured there indeed comes from Run DMC's song, which was already out for at least 5 years. Some people think it's the opposite as some samples there are dry without effects, but the guy took them from the multitracks he had of the original songs. I believe he had acess to studio tapes or similar. A guy uncovered the origin of many of the Zero G samples here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5_baHh4iq2pldU

3:21 I always felt that the stop in the Launch Base song was more to emulate CD music of the time and how if you repeated it, there would be a pause while the track cycled back to the start. You don't hear these pauses anymore because streaming music can perform the change much faster then a CD drive that had to seek back to the position to play the music from the start.

I think Proto Launch Base theme is telling the audience that it's a fake final level. Like it starts sounding like a Final Level but it's playing with your expectations kinda like how the level itself plays with the idea of it being the Final Level only show that it's not the end yet and you fall down to Mushroom Valley. In the original stage order After Launch Base you go to Mushroom Valley aka Mushroom Hill then Sandopolis then Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary and then Death Egg. So Launch Base was the mid point of the adventure like a false climax in a story. Mushroom Valley was the cool down for the final gauntlet of difficulty that was to come. Its sad that the original release did not play like such cause that was pretty original for a game. Most games have a gradual progression of difficulty but Sonic 3 devs wanted to tell a story not just make some levels and it shows. The music being part of said story.

I'm over a week late, but I do have a small thing to say. Remember that the PC version MIDIs probably weren't composed with the soundfont supplied with Windows in mind. I've been doing some research regarding this over the past... well, honestly, years. But realised fairly recently that the "FM" MIDI tracks supplied tend to sound very, very smooth with the SC-55 of all things. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was composed with that in mind. The volume levels are much much more balanced (albeit, still not perfect), and everything just snaps into place. It's quite remarkable. The "GM" tracks sound nicer with the Windows soundfont, but... they're much flatter sounding than the "FM" tracks with a proper synthesiser. Still, it's much better than what a lot of people were probably listening to if they weren't going around fiddling with the options. I know this doesn't mean anything to you or your viewers by this point, but I figure the trivia involved might be interesting. Also, yes, I'm aware the SC-55 isn't an FM synthesiser. But the "FM" tracks don't exactly sound quite right like they do using the SC-55 either. :D

@superrayman3 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have an SC-55 and would you be able to upload a video with an FM track when playing through it? I'd be very interested in comparing the SC-55 FM version to the FM MIDI when played through a Yamaha OPL3 because the OPL3 version sounds pretty respectable when compared to the Genesis originals (for what they are).

@@superrayman3 There's a fairly accurate SC-55 soundfont out there (thanks to the fact the instruments can't be directly programmed - they're all baked in in their settings), but I've been needing to save up and pony up for the truly real thing. I expect results to be 99.7% the same anyway. I was admittedly hoping Alex Yard had access to one.

I feel the direction of the first Launch Base was to encourage the players to keep going until they completed the level. In my opinion, it sounds like it wasn't meant to be hard as Sonic himself sees this as a fun adventure. The musical composition then makes a bit more sense from the perspective of Sonic rather than telling a final chapter of a story. I think the sound directors realized that it wouldn't work out too well and managed to get the composers to create an iconic stage song that we all love and grew up with. Thanks for the awesome video! I learned a lot about Sonic 3's Music Theory from this channel.

I think having the happier tone works better for 3K because it’s such a soon ending. You get this idea that you’re already at the end, you’ve tackled the death egg and it was over, and all pretty easy. Then Mushroom Hill and the rest of the game kinda smack you in the face, leaving Death Egg to really carry the sense of danger that comes with being the big final end

I do, but it's definitely the closest call for me with the choices. The final version is amazing also, but I think it fits less when you're playing through the entire S3K

OMG this channel is amazing. You’re also looking at prototype Sonic music! Have you considered covering Sonic 2 and it’s musical peculiarities? Like how Oil Ocean Zone’s music sounds like stereotypically Egyptian because it was probably originally for an axed zone known as Sand Shower? Or how the multiplayer music also fits the themes of other cut zones?

I grew up with the pc tracks. I always felt like act2 was cheering you on, saying: "don't give up yet, your so close to catching him" creating an anticipation for the resolution. Which is why it's my favorite track in the game.

No way! Music theory and/or attention to the S&K Collection Launch Base?! I always had a soft spot for it, since that PC collection was a big part of my child/teenhood. Nice to see a theory video about it. I'd wanted to do one myself but was too lazy.

that 4 to 1 you talk about early in the video reminds me of some of the sweeping synths in the sim city 2000 soundtrack (specifically the Mac version, since it used a type of .mod music rather than general midi like the pc version)

This talk about the prototype songs makes me talk about the story told within the songs. Carnival Night Act 1's Prototype Music gives the feeling that you've entered a fun area, but you have no time to play games, but over time you play more and more games which eventually gets you to your location, leading you to the midboss. Act 2 hits off harder with the fact that you can have more fun while destroying Robotnik's work, eventually getting to him at the end boss of the zone.

I remember hearing the beta/PC version of Launch Base Zone Act 1 in a fangame called "Neo Sonic Universe" as a kid, (it was a MMF game made in the early 2000s, so it was a pretty ancient fangame) but I still remember it fondly, as it was some of my first exposure to Sonic games) so finding out it was the original music for Launch Base Zone was quite a surprise. Act 1 sounds heroic (imo), but I prefer Act 2 for whatever reason. I like both versions of Launch Base Zone, obviously. I love MJ
