I've bought only two gimbals in my photography/videography career, a DJI and a ZHIYUN. The DJI was so easy to setup but it didn't give me as many options as I needed. The ZHIYUN was/is a pain to setup, but it gave me all the options I needed. In the end, I found it just easier to train myself on how to hold my cameras while pairing it with solid baseplates, rigs, and grips. Pick up and go is now my new motto.

I agree with you. I am a small creator right now and have my videography business in Denmark. And i saw everywhere on youtube that they have gimbals, drones. Soo i have them too. Because "i need them to make those cool videos" Well.. I like them, it is badass, but they are sitting on the shelfs collecting dust. And i always have to come up with a video to justify the use of them. Thank you for this video, and small creators like me, just keep practice with the tools you have! I had the same experience with my gimbal. It lays in a drawer and is only used 2-3x each year. I used it a ton in the first year of my job though. Same for the drone which was a much more costly mistake. The slider is a weekly necessity for me though since most of my video work consists of product shots. I recently upgraded to the Zeapon Axis Pro and I am pretty happy with it. It has some software quirks which I wish they would finally address in a firmware update, but most of them exist since the previous hardware generation. Still great though! Things that have been absolutely worth it: Getting a second, smaller and more flexible COB light, a c stand and the Sony 70-200 F4 G2 for product close-ups. I'm glad I invested into it and I'm sure I'll keep even long after upgrading the camera body.

I used to live in a big city and rental was an option. I now live and work in a rural area, with no access to rentals, so I have had to buy a lot of kit. Can’t be without my gimbal. It is my instant setup ‘tripod’, as well as a way to add some movement or walk and talk shots. Especially rigged with my FX6. My waste of money piece of gear was a shoulder rig. I have NEVER used it on a shoot. I use the gimbal for shots that I thought would need a shoulder rig. Perhaps I would use it if I had heavier rigs that could not balance on my RS3 Pro. My best investment - tripods. Got the best Manfrotto and Miller tripods that I could afford, and they have never let me down.

I keep a Mavic 3 Pro and Mini 3 Pro in my bag every single day. I use them very, very often. Can't live without them. But...you are 1,000% correct. The vast, vast majority of people buying drones see all these epic reviews with epic scenery...only to learn that they can only film their neighborhood so many times before realizing they've totally wasted their money. The DJI Mini 2 SE ($300) is all the drone 99.9% of people who WANT a drone will ever need. But that's exactly your point. Study your needs before spending money on anything.
@jacopoabbruscato927110 ай бұрын
I agree on the drone. At least I use it in my free time when I go hiking, but apart from that it hasn't been a worthwhile investment. It made sense when I used to do weddings since drone footage was part of the package as a second shooter, but thankfully I moved to commercial/advertisement. Plus it was always a risk because wedding venues always had trees, canopies and tall stuff in general, they didn't pay me enough to risk the drone. The gimbal is another good one. I bought a Ronin-M for cheap (100$) since I rarely need it, it might collect a bit of dust but at least I didn't spend much on it. I despise gimbals with a passion, wouldn't want to spend money to rent one repeatedly.

Spot on. Agreed with every item you mentioned. I live and work mostly in the country so renting gear is not really an option (other than long term rentals) so I have to buy gear as I need it and be smart about what I need (though I fail at this now and then as we all do). I’ve wasted a lot of money on dust collectors called gimbals. I also agree about drones. Most of us don’t need one. I never bought a drone until I started shooting real estate photos and videos about three years ago and the times I’ve needed one for my other work is rare, it happens but not often enough to justify buying a drone or at least not one of the expensive ones. I aways try to buy what I need not what I want or feel I need to impress clients with, I don’t cheap out either but I also don’t buy above the specs I know I can or will use (which is why I bought the S5ii over the S5IIX recently) so I’ve stuck with the mini drones and they are more than adequate for my needs. And yes I have also had the cheap media experience. Not fun. Another thing I do a lot is that I find myself thinking I’ve wasted money on new gear I buy that takes me a while to use or build my confidence with. I often find I reach for the old and trusty bit of kit like a camera or whatever in a pinch and then I feel guilting about not using the new shiny spec’d out thing that I just spent all this money on but I’ve found I have to give it time, eventually the new gear takes over from the old as I gradually get used to it and then it pays itself off.

Nice video :) I don't really agree about a slider - recently bought one to use instead of a gimbal every time I need some subtle movement (and I've rarely had shootings where the client wouldn't insist on some fluid movement in at least several shots). However, I bought the Zeapon slider which could be upgraded to motorized by buying additional module, but for now is a fully functional manual slider. The setup time on a single tripod is minuscule as compared to balancing a gimbal: it's mostly switching the quick release plates. But that's what's what I agree with - you don't need a motorized slider unless you need to shoot a moving timelapse, or a repeated shot that is exactly the same every time. For more common applications, it's much better to practice operating it manually: less gear to buy and to transport that way, and it can add just the right amount of organic feel to the otherwise perfectly fluid motion :D

Slider: I got a cheap one, now trying to give it away. It was more useful when I was a timelapse addict but since I don't do those anymore I don't use the slider Gimbal: I love what they do, but I haven't use it as much as I intended. Had some project ideas I was going to use it on (and did a few projects) but yeah doesn't get a lot of use. I have to force myself to use it Drone: So I knew I would not use this professionally. I use it for vacations, so I just get a mini. I don't use it a lot but appreciate when I do need it. I got mine for a hobby shots only and kept to a tighter budget

This is funny! I tried 3 DJI gimbals, 3 hour phone call with DJI didn't fix the tracking. The next morning I turned on the gimbal I had perfectly calibrated the night before, and the Gimbal started rattling and literally jumped off the table with my A7IV on it. I caught it in mid air, disassembled that gimbal and sent it back to Amazon. Since then, I use a steady cam. no batteries, just some skills to learn, not too hard.

It's interesting how working in slightly different areas of the industry which gear is worth it and which isn't can be quite different. For me shooting resorts, gimbals and drone are essential. In fact I've probably made far more money out of my DJI Mavic 2 Pro than any other bit of camera equipment I've ever owned. That said when I do a corporate job the gimbal and drone almost never get touched so I agree for most people these aren't pieces of kit you should be looking at getting first. Also sliders, outside of product shooters, are a complete waste of money.

Best gear I bought in the begining of 2023 was a cage, top handle, and monitor. I would use my gimbal for maybe 3-5 shots per wedding in 2022-2023. Now it's listed on eBay, but can only sell for under $100. I crashed my buddy's DJI mini 2 drone in 2023 abd gave mine to him, and since then haven't had a drone abd havebt needed one. Best purchase of 2023 was an M1 Max MacBook pro, because it allowed me to edit my footage so much faster, in my previous computer basically died every time you try to play back footage. I agree and disagree with your comments about tripods. I agree that you shouldn’t go cheap but I bought two tripods that cost me $1,200 each when I bought them and they don’t often get used. I shoot primarily, live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. Often I have to set up my cameras in the audience seating area, the big tripods with double legs, big feet and spreaders are a pain to get into the seats. I most often use my Manfrotto 502 with single legs and small feet. I also bought a powered slider. I thought I would use it to get a nice movement with my wide shot. I’ve only used it once. It takes too much time and hassle to set up. I normally use three cameras and two audio recorders so my set up takes time even without a slider and often I don’t have unlimited time to set up because the venue often won’t let me in more than two hours before the show and I have to be ready before they open the house.

Incidentally, a lot of those people have bigger, more expensive cameras now than they did 5 or even 10 years ago as a result of growing their businesses - and heavier cameras lend themselves to smooth handheld footage so much better. It’s one of those things were only time will tell what’s a gimmick and what stays around. Now don’t get me wrong, gimbals aren’t gimmicks. But using them on EVERYTHING kind of is.

It also depends on a camera. If it's heavy enough (like Ursa Mini I see Alex is using or even a rigged BMPCC), it's possible to shoot a stable handheld footage, but with a lightweight mirrorless (like the Nikon Z30 I use as a B-cam), it's pretty much impossible not to have the micro-jitters that would ruin the footage. Just as the gimbal for me, i use the gimbal in conferences as a stage camera with ptz function, people must also understand that not everyone who needs these things live in places where they can hire, and most beginers don't even have a steady company with an insurence to cover a hired drone, so one time $700 drone if it crashes fine. One thing i see around is a repeated constantly gimbal and drone, not easy gudgets to master, but if you find a real pro, they have zero problems with those gudgets, my take is in Film industry since the majority don't attend film school, people will buy these gudgets regardless, my take is that it is a learning curve which many must pass, very few will reach the top without going through the waste. You hear this talk of "buy once and don't buy cheap" no possible, no beginner will buy a MKH 416?, which beginer will buy a o'connor tripod? not even a cheap Aputure light is a priority of a beginer

Feel the same about the gimbal. And I noticed that "gimbal bro's" shoot EVERYTHING on gimbals, it's kinda annoying lol. I bought a DJI mini 2, so it wasn't too expensive, I enjoy it, but yes, I barely use it and I often find myself FORCING a drone shot just because I have a drone 😂.

lol same I try to use my drone every chance I get but still only shoot it 3-5 times a year
@WhySteve10 ай бұрын
Same, haha! I can only imagine how it has to feel seeing that you bought the actual Mavic 3 and not a mini

how are you ment to learn how to use a gimbal if you need to rent it? Surely you learn once you have them by just going and using it?

A lot of wedding filmmakers would disagree on the gimbal. But for a film set that might be good advice, i don't know...
@jacopoabbruscato927110 ай бұрын
It's about the only part of the industry where buying a gimbal makes sense, you get to use it often and marginal gains with newer model mean a lot with long hours. I remember shooting weddings with an RS-2 and locking and unlocking motors all the time really got on my nerves, something the RS-3 solved. Gimbals still aggravate me to no end with their ergonomics, though.
@sladjj10 ай бұрын
@@jacopoabbruscato9271 There's more and more solutions for the ergonomics nowadays. There are a lot of situations in a wedding where you can't go without a gimbal, at least where I come from :)

@@jacopoabbruscato9271 I think the other part of the industry where it makes a lot of sense is the real estate niche

12:21 "It's on a hard drive, it's already in transit, it's safe..it's good." You willingly deleted client footage while knowing the only existing copy was on a spinning disk that was in the mail? You still have a lot to learn about data management Cheap drive or not any spinning disk would be vulnerable Redundancy is crucial

People tend to fall into 2 camps - those who can't live without them and those who never use one. There's very little in between.

You are right the DJI ROnin is a wast of money for 1000 dollars.. but can't we look into cheaper options? :D I am always laughing my ass off when people are talkinga bout DJI gimbals and how everyone should have one. I bought a Weebill 2 for 300 dollars and used it more than 10 times so renting it would have cost me more.. :D Also there are even cheaper option like the Feiyutech G6 Max for under 100 dollars and that can do exactly what the DJI Ronin can. :D

Most of this makes sense... I'm surprised you recommended a good tripod yet you use a cheap smallrig - I tried it and had to say no. It's really not suitable for an URSA 12k. Also don't rent a drone; rent a drone operator with kit as they are going to do a better job plus the insurance hire charge is high.

I actually disagree with your gimbal opinion, even though I have phases of using it or not, but to have one is a good idea, at least in my line of work And you can always sell it second hand and get a lot of money back. I also charge my clients for most of my gear I own so it eventually get's paid off anyhow and no need to give that money to a rental house. So I really have to disagree with you on rentals, but of course it depends on what you are doing and what you can or cannot charge back to your clients. I would also rather have most of my gear in my house or warehouse and not have to takes trips back and forth to pick up a lot of gear for every shoot personally, if I can.. I see why you don't lie gimbals with that huge URSA 12K LOL

I just got the Robus RC-5570 Vantage Series 3 today, with another one coming tomorrow, and I love it. 70" tall without a center column and can go super low. They're $550 new, but I just got two on ebay for $300 each. Took a lot of research to find an independent leg style that is also tall enough to see over a crowd

A good tripod lasts forever. Identify _good_ (which isn't the same thing as "trendy") by looking at what was considered a good professional tripod five or ten years ago and is still considered a top buy today...then look for a used one.

I 100% agree that a drone is a wasted purchase for 95% of shooters. It's easier and cheaper to bring in a drone op for a day than it is to run one ourself.
