great vid mate. just bought a tidy 2010 159 2.4 jdtm for $700 nzd. ill be doing the timing belt and waterpump soon so ill take manifold off and clean and delete swirlflaps while im there. did you leave the o rings on the blanking plugs as i thought the heat from tig welding would destroy them? ive got expertise in ali tig so will do myself, was thinking of just making my own plugs in lathe minus the o ring and just tig them in would that be sufficient? cheers from new zealand

Yes just tig them in mate, thanks for watching 👍😀

Bloody heck! I just bought a 1.9JTDm that had 2 new valves fitted after a flap was ingested and bent 2 valves. Now I'm gonna have to check whether this thing has been de-flapped!

Would a terra clean not solve the problem?
@FullBoostJ43 жыл бұрын
Might help clean it up but if you've got play in the spindles of the swirl flaps it still needs sorting. Also water meth kits are great for keeping intakes clean.

@@FullBoostJ4 ok thanks for the reply, I need my timing belt and water pump doing, and as I understand it’s a good time to do the flaps as well, but it’s £1000 all in as appose to £400 for belt and pump change, my car pulls well (bit Smokey) starts fine, so should I get it done? Thanks
@FullBoostJ43 жыл бұрын
New inlet manifolds are available but the best thing you could do would be to delete them. But don't discount fitting a new manifold if you want to keep things standard and not require a remap etc.

@@FullBoostJ4 appreciate the advice, thanks 🙏 👍🏻

You don't have to have a remap after deleting.Just remove the plastic arm off the actuator and the ECU still thinks it's connected and moving flaps .

I just want to know, how much diffrence there is if i delete them or buy a new manifest, with new flaps, because its around 250€ cheaper to just buy delete kit
@the_steko8 ай бұрын
like is this realy important or should i jsut delete it and have peace
@FullBoostJ48 ай бұрын
You could get a new one and it could be fine for another 8 to 10 years. With a delete kit, you have peace of mind that the flaps will never be able to damage the engine, and you'll never have boost leaks. I don't suppose they stay air tight for very long anyway.

@@FullBoostJ4 the car is from 2005, its my first car i suppost i wont have it for 8-10 years, maybe 4-6years.....and what performance do i get with a new manifest or delete kit, how much better is it with the flaps

After how many miles can i expect something like this?

The shafts take a while to wear but mine had covered 90k miles, expect to see problems arising from 40k miles

Hi! Thank for the guide! I am going to delete the flaps on mine this weekend. There is excessive play in the shafts of the flaps rendering the manifold leaking. I Wonder if that is the reason to a hissing sound under hard acceleration. Initially I thought it was the charge air piping and hoses that had holes in them, but there are no holes.
@FullBoostJ43 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching 👍 yes I had a similar issue. With some spray on the spindles I could see lots of bubbling and more so when revving the engine so under high boost I imagine it was quite a leak. It also reduced black smoke too 👍

Nice video! I bought a new manifold, was wondering if you use any kind of sealant when you mount it back on? The new one came with no joint of any sort. Thanks :)

You'll need to use a new steel gasket, readily available from Alfa or other Alfa specialists, I'm surprised the manifold didn't come with a new one.

Greetings! Are these engines reliable? What are the most expensive problems with this engine?
@FullBoostJ43 жыл бұрын
They are generally very reliable, the biggest issues people have are the swirl flaps causing problems. Next are EGR problems with coking up (but that's also most diesel engines) The exhaust manifold studs have a habit of breaking on number one and five cylinders. This will exhibit itself from via a ticking or tapping sound. They're a great engine with plenty of torque and power and being five cylinder they sound fantastic 😃
