These Alfa's were massively underrated and it's great to see such a well preserved one. I was lucky enough to have driven a few of them and they were great cars.

Naughty memory: back in the day, I was once stuck in my 164 V6 (had to be Alfa red, of course) in the fast lane behind a Mercedes saloon (C-class, whatever) that refused to pull over doing about 80mph. It accelerated to 90 to shake me off. Nothing doing. Merc' accelerates to 100mph... nothing doing. Finally at about 110 (as I recall) it pulled over. I floored the pedal and the dear old Busso engine purred as I sailed past the Merc. I got up to about 125 until, satisfied that the Merc' was in my dust, I slowed back down. Childish, I know, but most Alfa drivers will agree: there's just something about German car drivers that gets the Alfista's blood up... 😎 (This all happened on a German autobahn of course 😉).

Personally i let them race off, makes me smile lol They dont like a pretty italian machine cramping their style and off they go like a scolded cat lol I like to drive at my speed no matter what, its more enjoyable that way. And my car will stay pristine.

Similar story here, being tailgated by a Mitsubishi Galant in my 24v Super Lusso, waited for the uphill section of road and bye bye Mitsubishi, they tried for a while and then gave up. I won't mention indicated speed but it was well up towards the specified top speed

Wonderful, wonderful car. I owned an '89 2 liter Twin Spark in exactly this colour combination. After 300k km's it was immaculate inside and out! It was the Alfa Romeo Netherlands director's company car. Unfortunately the early twin spark setup proved impossible to put right once it started having serious issues... Sold it to Germany as a movie/series prop. I still own a very nice metallic blue '93 3.0 V6 24v Super with black leather interior today. Hasn't run for 16 years, waiting for a future revival. In my opinion the 164 is the most beautiful sedan ever made.

164s got really good rustproofing. There are only a few known issues. Front jacking points are weak - they are holding only by floor pan and not the actual sill, so they tends to crack and that is why there is rust. Other week point is rear longtitudal arm mount - it is collecting water from leaking sunroof and boot lid. Other than that there usually are no rust issues and there is no real trouble finding clean car. And what´s more, 164s are really solid mechanically. Biggest problem is getting parts to maintain them. Basic things like shock absorbers are gettnig rare and many times you just have to rebuild ones you have. Really it is not that easy keeping these on the road.

Should be 220 BHP in the Cloverleaf 24valve. 210BHP on the Super. The Cloverleaf has bigger headers. My children have never forgiven me for selling my 24 valve super which they said was the nicest car they have ever travelled long distances in. Apart from the cambelt, the biggest risk is the diff. 164s were really well rust treated, far better than the 166.

Best colour combo the red. The black with tan leather is also nice. I had a deep green with black leather and also a 12v burgundy with grey cloth. Loved those cars, faults were with the Bosch electronics. Stupid incandescent dash lighting, door handles would snap, and also the seat motors would stick. Power steering racks were bad. Overall solid for an Alfa.
@howardlake61783 жыл бұрын
Yes, it should be 220bhp,and when they first came out they were a new beginning for Alfa, so rust proofed extremely well. Known by some as 'Big Sud' because it retained the Sud front suspension to give it great handing 😀

Actually, I think, as someone said, 230bhp. Being quite a light car by modern standards, it would 'surprise' a few powerful modern cars 😂
@aHumanCookiee3 жыл бұрын
They do! A 12 valver with 192bhp will hit 65-70 in second gear, and in quite a rapid way, with a 230bhp cloverleaf and the willingness to dump the clutch you would probably be looking at 0-60 in the mid to high 6s which is more or less modern hot hatch territory.

Is it possible to spray the new cars underneath for additional protection? I remember my father doing this to his cars in the eighties, that additional layer started to peal off after 10 years or so which made those cars entirely rust free. Although the climate here is not so humid.

The rear subframes are impossible to get. I had a spare with my black car but I sold it on with the vehicle. Be worth asking the customer if he wants his rear subframe protected with some cavity wax as he will not be able to replace it when it rots through.
@aHumanCookiee3 жыл бұрын
Anything can be replaced/repaired if you have the money/willingness to keep a car like this on the road. That being said it is the reason a lot of these ended up in the scrap heap, I have a galvanized one fitted to mine that a former owner sold to me, my original one that I took off (bit rusty on the surface) and one I inherited when my mechanic retired along with a brand new front screen. These bits are still out there, they are just hidden in places and you have to be lucky with your timing really.
