Let's face facts. Precious few of us buy a coupe because of the way it drives. In most cases they drive identically to the saloon model they're often based on. Coupes tend to be bought for something less tangible. Call it a sense of occasion, whatever, but it's that heart warming feeling you get when you see it outside your house and swell with pride that it's yours. Few coupes do a better job of tugging the heart strings than Alfa Romeo's Brera and here we take a look at whether a used example really is worth your while.

I have a 2.2 Prodrive. Over 130k miles now and it's still solid, has had no major issues, still turns heads, is fun to drive and feels special. The cabin (in particular the 2008 onwards 'facelift' models) is beautiful and has a real sense of occasion. Still have strangers compliment the car and ask about it - how many other 13 year old cars that are available for so little could you say the same about?

Very fair write up. It's a car that looks better than it drives, but it's still a wonderfully soulful GT. I love mine as much now as I did the day i bought it. That's in spite of finding out I need a new timing chain...(!)

Someone near me ended up with that on a 3.2L. They bought as an investment piece like me, took it to be serviced and it flagged as needing a new timing belt. They tried to get the warranty company to fix, but they said because it hadn't failed there was no claim... even though to fix once broken would be a lot lot more.

Had a 2008 prodrive, beautiful looks lost count of people who would stop you to comment on the looks. However car ruined by GM parts and underpowered fuel hungry engine even 2.2 drank like oli reed. Car ran fine for 8 years then Belt change cost £1800, exhaust manifold rotted and needed replacing and took a month to come from alfa italy as they had to purpose build it another £1500, then cooling pipes needed replacing all in the space of 6 months, had to cut my losses, sad day as beautiful car. Would i buy another low milage one of course i would its a Alfa and heart decision. On a side note saw one last week with a learner plate on, broke my heart, that should be illegal dosent deserve that....

The Brera concept had scissor doors and boasted around 400 hp. Probably the fact that the production model lacked those goodies made this beauty less desirable.

Yes and no, people are just stupid to oversee those little details. This thing is still an absolutely beautiful hatchback! I would love the 4 cylinder, or v6, imported to Canada!

A car I am currently considering buying, 3.2 Q4 manual in red, I love the looks, I really have to wonder about the driver experience from what I have seen. I am going for a test drive tomorrow, so maybe I can add this add this experience to this review. To my eyes still a very pretty car, but I think think the front overhang could have been shorter. Thanks for the review.

I have the 2.2 JTS and love it. Totally agree that the Diesel makes no sense because of the noise alone. It's a 15-year-old car so needed some work but nothing serious or difficult. I will never sell it and I'm sure the more they get ruined by 'upgrades' the more it will be worth and the more it will turn heads.

Alfisti never say "One, Seven Fifty", it's a "Seventeen Fifty". I'm happy with my 2.4 Brera parked next to my GTV6 3.0.

I have a 3.2L SV Q4 hoping that it will rise in value. It has the rhubard custard interior which I love but many hate. It's a giant pain in the butt to own but I love to look at it. I don't drive it too much though, too expensive to run and I'm scared to see it tick over 69,999 miles. Not too sure whether that will matter though?...

@@LuXoR1590 How so? Mine has 285,000 km apart from replacing a glow plug at 45,000km it has run without a single fault. Still goes like a train, doesn't smoke or use oil, gets the same fuel economy as when new. Still sounds like an old tractor tho 🤣

Just a little note Jonathan, the 3.2 S you were driving is only FWD, not 4. Although the 1750TBI maybe be the pick of the bunch the production run was so short they are as rare as hens teeth. I loved my 2.2 Prodrive S which I drove for over 60,000 miles, only making way for a Giulia.

They should have used the 3.6 litre block which would have given it around 300 horsepower. Still not a sports car but fewer people would call it slow.

Production of the Busso Engine ended in 2005…Brera was too late to be outfitted with that engine. The new 3.2 origins from GM and lacks the squeal of the Busso V6 unfortunately. It’s also quite heavy on the front axle.

i have heard and read storties that the 2.2 litre engine is not the one to get, because it would be unreliable, but i dont know if this is true

Thats Vauxhalls/GM's 2.2 eco-tec. They are not spectacular by any means but okey for the era. It's Achilles heel is timing chain. That said V6 petrol ,1750 tbi or even 2.4td if you are that sort of person are imho better choice.
