As the owner of a 2019 Stelvio, I worry about brand dilution. This downmarket Hornet will attract a decidedly different type of buyer and thats ok for the survival of Dodge, dealers and Stellantis. However, it almost feels as if they sacrificed Alfa Romeo in the process. Also, when it comes time to replace my Stelvio, i will not be going to the Dodge dealer. I will definitely go back to Alfa Romeo. Hopefully in a couple years, they will have a broader selection.

Both based on the AMAZING Giorgio platform (which Marchionne spear headed) have set the bar in their class for handling, steering, acceleration and overall driving dynamics. He commissioned a Ferrari Skunkworks team to develop those models and his vision was realized by the end products. That front end change: Chrysler did the same thing with the long-departed Crossfire, built on a Mercedes SLK platform. The concept car had a dramatic front end, with vertically-oriented headlights, but Chrysler thought the production car should have a "more-corporate-looking" front. So they watered it down for production, and lost sales (well, there were other problems, as well).

I am curious about the reliability as well. Most people buying in this segment likely won't be aware of the Hornet's Italian engineering, and it'll probably sell better based on better brand recognition, which means I think a lot will sell overall. And from that I think we will, eventually, have pretty good data on the reliability. As usual the first MY may have some bugs to iron out, although with any luck, with the Tonale already on the roads in Europe, maybe they'll find some things to quickly iron out before the US Hornets and Tonale's land. Maybe. Who knows. The RDX is really good too.

@@velocemidwest The 1.3 Multi-air engine used is the same one they have been using for years now in the Fiat 500. The Multi-Air technology (see KZbin videos on it) is over 8 years old now, fully debugged, and is far simpler than the cam switching tech used in Honda VTEC engines. It's an amazing technology to have a software defined electrohydraulic intake valve system, and it gives MultiAir engines about a 10% advantage over static cam engines. Italian products have a bad reputation (from a long time ago), but this engine is very clever, and used so broadly in Europe where 1.3L is considered a medium sized engine... In Brasil motors are 1 L, and a huge chunk of Japan's engines are only 0.6 L... Americans drive fast on freeways and we don't like puny motors. Interestingly, there is a 1.3 L diesel engine that is also used by Stellantis in various territories, that was jointly developed with GM. That is also a clever little engine. What is made in huge quantities, usually gets all the bugs worked out. I would be apprehensive if Alfa offered motors that are not used elsewhere.

Nice review, but why didn't you explain more of how Dodge screwed Alfa Romeo by essentially just taking their creation without changing much. About how it's just rubbing poop in the face of a brand that has been producing special cars for over 111 years. This Alfa Romeo Tonale has tradition built into it. The GT Sprint line along the side of the vehicle that pays tribute to the Sprint GT and GTA. The front lighting that tributes SZ. The lower rear window point that tributes the 8C and the Brera. And the worst part for me. Taking the Ocra GT color that is clearly a GT and GTA color from Alfa Romeo's past. Sharing a platform is common. But the smart companies make changes in order to make each one indistinguishable. In short, it's bullshit. True individuals that know Alfa Romeo will hopefully thumb their noses at Dodge and pay tribute to what this car is supposed to do for the brand. It's been a great thing for them so far in European countries. If I'm being honest though, some American buyers won't care. They will just drive around their spaghettios. Instead of the Italian Tonale that Alfa Romeo spent millions developing. Could have been done ethically, but Dodge brass blew it.

I drove my Stelvio to Mississippi and nobody could even say Alfa-Romeo properly, and there was no dealership for hundreds of miles, so I see why being able to sell a version as a Dodge, which many Americans think is a domestic brand, makes sense. They did this with the Dart, which was an Alfa-Romeo really kinda. Or fiat, it's confusing.

Yah, iirc the Dart was called the Fiat Chroma in Mexico, which I think was the only other market it was sold in (might be wrong). Platform was distantly related to whatever the Alfa Giulietta was on, I think. And yah, Alfa's poor dealership network doesn't aide them.

We owned two Jeep Renegades (2015 Latitude followed by 2021 Limited). No major issues with either. We just traded in the low mileage Renegade Limited on a gold Dodge Hornet R/T for the trade +$5.5k (out the door) with the Colorado point of sale tax credit (and just over half off of MSRP when you minus taxes and fees) . Even if this ends up being unreliable, its still a great deal. We were going to lease it but did the math and it made more sense to purchase with the current incentive and dealer discount. If we decide to keep it past the factory warranty, we can always buy an extended warranty. The car drives great and no problems yet (knock on wood). I can understand why no one would want to spend $42k+ for the Hornet, but at the current discounts available here it really is a bargain (if reliability isn't a major concern for the buyer). It is too bad that this vehicle hasn't caught on even at these prices, as I've only seen a handful on the roads. It may have made more sense to sell it as a Chrysler than a Dodge (or maybe not), but the Hornet badging really stands out in a car market full of bland CUVs. I have a thing for weird cars, off the beaten path, so this thing is right up my alley, even with all of its quirks, and I know pretty well what I am getting myself into.

Thanks for all that info & making a video! The Hornet is not much cheaper than the Tonale and I believe we can ultimately get Tonales for even cheaper using the Federal EV tax credit loophole. As I’ve been pricing out cars lately it looks like the phev versions are almost identical in price. Dodge isn’t letting us price the phev like Alfa is yet but from what I found it’ll be at most $1-2k less. This is where the leasing loophole comes in. The feds left a loophole for commercial EVs where all these new regulations don’t apply. When you lease an EV the leasing company will get the full $7,500 credit since it’s a commercial vehicle owned by them that they’re renting to you & it’s up to them to decide to pass it on to you or not. Toyota & other large dealers don’t & I’m doubtful Dodge will either. But Alfa has confirmed it’s eligible & will pass the savings on based on my discussions with my local dealer in CA. So you can get a cheaper lease & ultimately just lease to own a Tonale & with the $7,500 credit it will ultimately be cheaper than buying an at most $2k less Hornet.

A foot of ground clearance. Stop pretending we want to sit on the ground. Batteries and electric motor can be put low and slightly mid-forward. A 3 cylinder ICE with front wheel drive. Or flip the idea and electric in front. Management system to drive the most ideal blend, and electric only when those inputs say it's best efficiency in efficiency modes. The Hornet proves that Premium doesn't excist anymore. The Alfa Tonale is just a blown-up 2003 Fiat Punto, that can easily be sold for less money than Alfa asks for it. Qualitywise and luxurywise 'budget' brands like Kia and Hyundai have surpassed Alfa in almost every way. Alfa made the wrong choice to want to be 'premium'. Their best sold cars in history were the Alfa Sud and Alfa 33, which were sporty and more posh Fiats, which normal consumers could afford. Noone wants to trade their BMW or Mercedes for a Medieval Alfa. Carfanatics love Alfas for their sportiness, but they don't buy cars.
